The turn of the century was an unsettling time for Americans. Of course, there were the terrible attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, but before then we had a presidential election decided in a 5-4 Supreme Court decision. We had the bizarre tech panic that became known as Y2K. And perhaps most bizarre, the hottest rapper in the country was from St. Louis. Country Grammar and Nellyville made Nelly a bankable commercial star, one who would go on to give careers to his friends as the St. Lunatics and whoever owns the publishing on NBC's NBA preview music. But in recent years, Missouri has been relatively starved for Top 40 contributions. J.R. is trying to end that drought. "Best Friend," his collaboration with Trey Songz, positions itself as the newest song on your end-of-summer cookout playlist. Taking an unusually long break between audio and visuals--the MP3 dropped at the end of June--J.R. nonetheless figures the pool party vibes and general star quality will carry him through.
