Last fall, Tinashe made waves with Aquarius, her dynamic, vocally impressive debut. It was a powerful record that existed at the intersection of hip-hop and pop, with production work from both Stargate and DJ Dahi, Evian Christ and Boi-1da (not to mention beats from DJ Mustard, Detail, Mike WiLL Made It and Cashmere Cat, who co-produced Kanye West's nascent Vic Mensa and Sia collaboration, "Wolves"). There were guest turns from Future, Schoolboy Q and A$AP Rocky--in short, there was enough star power to push the album through to radio without objection. But in her latest video, for "Cold Sweat," Tinashe proves herself the star of her own show. Nearly every shot is close up on the Kentucky 20-something; her face is cool and expressive. When the clip does spin out of control, it stays in close quarters, blurring your vision and distorting her movements. "Cold Sweat" is a strong argument for Tinashe as a solo artist in the truest sense.
