Big K.R.I.T. Spits Fire On New Single “MT. Olympus”
Big K.R.I.T. got the streets primed for his new music with "Week Of K.R.I.T." in early March, where he dropped a new track or freestyle every day throughout the week, and now he's back with a vengeance with his first official single off his sophomore Def Jam effort, Cadillactica. The track, titled "MT. Olympus," is a scathing swipe at the hip-hop scene around him, particularly on the hook, saying, "Thought they wanted trap/Thought they wanted bass/Thought they wanted molly/Thought they wanted drank/Fuck them niggas."
Krizzle also addresses Kendrick Lamar's "Control" verse—"That 'Control' beat is like a ugly bitch that everybody done fucked raw/Maybe you hit it/Aw man, I'm more concerned why niggas been texting my cell/Callin' my phone/Askin' me 'bout this Kendrick shit/That he ain't even really dissed me on"—and articulates his struggle between juggling the music he wants to make, the music his fans want him to make, and the music that would put him on the radio across the world, finishing up with the heartfelt, "What’s good for hip-hop may not be good for my soul."
K.R.I.T. told XXL back in October that he'd be taking a step back from producing on this project and focus on keeping things fresh. "It’s creating this planet called Cadillactica where the soul and the funk comes from and being able to transcend my music with that idea," Krizzle said. "Diving deeper into what else can I do, how far can I take this record. How I can change these instruments and manipulate my voice; and make my voice an instrument. All these things to me are extremely important to really draw you in, to creatively try to do something totally different with this album."
Cadillactica had previously not had a release date, though a trailer that marked the end of the week of K.R.I.T. said the album was coming in the fall. Check the new track above, and the album's trailer below.
