jay electronica young artists
Speaking of Ferg, there’s a handful of young rappers coming out and making noise. Who would you guys choose as your top five, cream of the crop for young rappers right now?
Masta Ace: Jay Electronica is the top for me. He’s the top young dude for me.

Why Jay Elect?
Masta Ace: He’s lyrical. I feel like he has elements of all the coasts and areas. You hear the South in his drawl. You hear the East Coast in his wordplay. You hear the West a little. He’s a good mixture of everything that’s good about a rapper. He has it all kind of mixed in. And then there’s his intelligence there too with some of the stuff he talks about. So I just think he’s that kind of perfect package as far as the new guys coming up.

Wordsworth: Yeah, I like Jay. I like Drake. I like Kendrick. Who else is out there that’s really like that? I don’t really like too many people, man. I keep it real. I think I’m better than a lot of people. So when I hear you, you better have something compelling. You gotta have something compelling before I put you in a list with me. Like I’m thinking from the standpoint of, I’m around a bunch of people that can rap. It gotta be real impressive for me man.

Masta Ace: I like Joey Bada$$.

Punchline: I agree with that one.

Wordsworth: Joey gives you a lot of the 90s essence.

Punchline: Yeah, for a new young cat he does. I’m gonna add Big Sean on there.

I’m surprised you guys haven’t mentioned J Cole.
Punchline: I like J Cole. I liked both of his projects. I’d put him on there. But there’s others I’d probably put before J Cole, but he’s one of them. I like Big Sean and Drake, regardless of him being soft or whatever. I don’t think he’s supposed to be a hard artist anyway. Bar for bar, very dope. I love Elzhi.

Wordsworth: He’s not new.

Punchline: I say because he put out the Stillmatic. That was recent. And Kendrick, and wait, one more, Punchline. You can’t forget about that guy. [Laughs]
