Celebrity Basketball Fundraiser with Jadakiss Canceled Due to Protests

Tuesday May 8 11:25 AM CDT posted by xxl staff

jadakiss.jpgJadakiss and D-Block were scheduled to take part in a celebrity fundraising basketball game in Stamford, Conn. on May 19. But the event has now been canceled over fear of violence and protest from community leaders and Black churches. According to The Stamford Advocate, Jere Eaton, a potential presidential candidate for the NAACP’s Stamford branch, emailed community leaders, asking to protest Jadakiss’ appearance due to his lyrical content and criminal behavior. Deborah Sewell, president and chief executive officer of the Yerwood Center, which hosts the event, canceled the basketball game after receiving more than 60 phone calls in protest. “I’m disappointed, because I really felt this would have been a great opportunity for the community to band together and show up in force,” Sewell told The Advocate. “They’ve [Jadakiss and D-Block] always been supportive of the community and they love to play basketball.” But Jere Eaton didn’t share Sewell’s sympathy. “All of these artists are the worst of the worst,” Eaton said in an interview. “They’re criminals, their favorite word is the N-word, and they demean woman by calling them bitches and hoes.” Reverend Tommie Jackson, pastor of Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, was also one of the community leaders protesting the fundraising event. “The bottom line is we believe that the Yerwood Center needs to raise money,” Jackson said. “But there are better ways of doing it than bringing in Jadakiss.”

On the real though…
I’m a little more than sick of everyone targeting rap music, BUT, what do you expect when you have people in SMACKED DVD showing off they’re hammers and smoking piff and talking reckless? I don’t understand JET pulling Ludacris off the cover, but there is no gray. There’s only black and white. The rap music business is changing right in front of us. I told the artists that I work with that it’s time to adjust the formula. Flippin’ birds and choppin’ O’s (oz) and digital scales… That’s played. People are gonna have to show they’re skills again. Kingdom Come, Hip Hop Is Dead, Be, Late Registration… This is where you’re gonna have to go if you want to be heard on the radio. Be smart. Don’t be afraid of change.

I wanna be mad…but do I have a right to be? I mean…I’m in favor of hip hop being more responsible, or balanced, with the energy they put out there…but I’m still a Jada fan, cuz he’s nice with the rhymes. But damn…they are really goin’ HARD at hip hop…and that worries me…cuz soon even those who are talented won’t be able to speak through street poetry without some community leader trying to shut him down. Who’s to say that they won’t do this to Nas next week cuz he says “nigga.” It seems like they’re just gonna start lumping ALL hip hop artists/rappers/MC’s together as degenerate low-lifes, and that’s as ignorant on their part as it was for Imus to lump all of the Rutger girls together as nappy headed hoes.

After he said that, this same pastor is probably off to go cheat on his wife or gamble or take the churches money and but himself a car or some shit. If they going to go that far with this and blame every rapper for everything, then I think that all pastors and priests are cheaters and child molesters. I mean WTF, I’ve passed blunts with church folk. Holla!

Rodney M. Gray says:

As a soon to be 35 year-old, I really don’t listen to hip hop that much anymore, but there are certain artists/groups that I like and Jadakiss and D Block happens to fall in that few. That being said, I can’t believe our leaders won’t let Jada and D Block raise money for a good cause. Are you kidding me? And how do they propose to raise money for this center? Please wake up people. We can’t get ahead unless we’re on the same page working toward the same goal.

Pastors and Politicians…interesting mix. Pastors are busy denouncing rap lyrics as off base when they don’t even tell their people who they really are. What were our ancestors studying (religion) before slavery and christianity.
The other guy is trying to win an election to the NAACP…surprise, surprise he is speaking out against rap lyrics. Everyone needs to wake up and figure out who is really doing the pimpin’ and degrading.
