According to the New York Daily News, New York City’s urban radio station, Power 105.1, has announced they will stop playing hip-hop songs with degrading messages and images. The station’s program director, Helen Little, announced the plans on the Ed Lover, Egypt and Donnell Rawlins morning show on April 17. “The station won’t sound that different, because we weren’t playing a lot of that anyway,” Little said. “What we’re doing is holding labels and artists accountable for what they say and how they say it.” Also appearing on Power 105 that day was Rev. Al Sharpton, activist Kevin Powell and the station’s music director, Nadine Santos. The meeting was called in order to discuss the profanity in hip-hop lyrics in light of Don Imus’ racist remarks. “Let’s not get it twisted,” Little said. “This isn’t what hip-hop is about. What Imus said has nothing to do with hip-hop.” Little went on to say, “We’re not saying you can’t make this music, just we won’t play it. Our intention is to encourage people not to talk this way anymore.”

wtf is Lukee Lefty talkin bout! all the artists u named are close to 40, its called maturity….not soft dumbass! and as for the intentions of Power 105.1, though I admire the message they’re tryin to convey, it would be successful if competing stations don’t follow suit. Good luck with that!

This is a good move. We shouldn’t tolerate and listen to music that’s degrading to each other, especially when we can’t stand those (& even same) remarks from people of other races. So why should we accept that from our own people?!?!?! There needs to be a lot more creativity and different subject matter in the mainstream arena. There nothing really out that has really grabbed my attention. So, I’m looking forward to what RAKIM has to say in “The Seventh Seal” coming out this summer. Peace out.

So why should we except that from our own??!?!?! There needs to be more creativity, clever wordplay and different subject matter in the mainstream arena. D.S says:
It’s a shame that the media is really trying to point the finger at hiphop. Remember back when rappers were being attcked by both celebraties and politicians to outlaw gangster rap? How come mainstreem america didn’t jump on the bandwagon back then? Record companies made mad cheddar during those years of the east coast west coast beef & to be honest, the lyrics was worse than they are today. Radio stations are more than likely being forced to make changes like 105.1. I guess they’re figuring that if Imus can loose his job for what he said, then rappers shouldn’t be allowed to make money expressing themselves using language other races cannot use.

Then after 2 years of hearing nothing but watered down bullshit, someone new will come out and bring itright back around to the hard shit.
Dj Unks and D4Ls will be shot, bitches will be gettin they necks broke instead of having money rained on em, and the ignorance and poignant storytelling
of the golden gangsta era will be reincarnated for the 2000’s. Maybe somebody will beat the shit out of Weezy, if we’re lucky.
And smack Cam, someone needs to smack that fucking clown.

Phonetic ONE says:
I think this is a great step forward, not necessicarily for Hip Hop, but for at least Power 105.1. alot of what can be descrbed as deegrading is just getting old anyway, Hip Hop, s far as the music standpoint, is becoming a little stale, whnen mainstream is concerned. and non degrading music does not mean pop hop, it just mean music with its original purpose, lyrical skill.
