Relax and take notes ’cause class is in session. After months of speculation over which rappers made XXL’s third annual Freshmen Class cover, the list of the 10 Freshmen for ’10 was finally revealed last week.
Now is the unveiling of XXL’s April issue’s cover, featuring the 10 Freshmen for ’10. Hip-hop fans got a sneak peak of the mag’s special cover yesterday on MTV2’s Sucker Free, when it was first seen publicly and today (March 1) it hits the web.
The new breed of hustlers includes: Roc Nation’s first signee J. Cole, gangsta rap up-and-comer Nipsey Hu$$le, newly-minted Asylum lyricist Pill, 1017 Brick Squad member OJ Da Juiceman, indie-sensation Wiz Khalifa, G.O.O.D. Music’s own Big Sean, underground favorite Fashawn, Gary, Indiana rep Freddie Gibbs, West Coast phenom Jay Rock and the latest addition to the Atlantic roster, Donnis.
In addition to the special issue, XXL will also be dropping an exclusive mixtape, DJ Whoo Kid Presents XXL 10 Freshman for ‘10 Mixtape next Monday (March 8)—available for free on XXLMag.com, radioplanet.tv and thisis50.com—that will feature new music from all 10 of the cover stars. Whoo Kid will also be playing select cuts from the tape while the artists call in to his show this coming Saturday (March 6) on Sirius/Shade45.
Keep an out for behind-the-scenes footage of the shoot and interviews with all the Freshmen on mtv.com/news, MTV2’s Sucker Free and here at XXLMag.com. More info to come soon on the XXL 10 Freshmen for ’10 concert later this month in New York City. (You’ll also be able to win tickets to the show here.)
XXL’s April issue is on sale March 16 and includes the Freshmen producers, hip-hop soul artists and hip-hop duos/groups, also an in-depth look on what it’s like to be a new rapper today, a special recap of last year’s Freshmen class and an Eye Candy that’ll make you say ahh. —XXL Staff

gotta agree wit Josh G. altho i do dig Nipsey, im frm the west coast so its only natural. but yet again, XXL messes up this list. wheres XV again? Jay Electronica? Illdot Logic, his remake of 808’s and Heartbreaks is genuis. Chiddy Bang? Chiddy Bangs flow is attention grabbing and so natural, not 2 mention Xaphoon’s producing skill. and BTW, whatever happened 2 an Emcee and his Dj? now its just the rapper and a beat, we need that old school freshness. we need more Eric B. & Rakim, or Fresh Prince & Jazzy Jeff!!

Not completely true.
Kid Cudi, WALE, Asher, Charles, BoB, Ace Hood…all of them had mainstream success from last year.
Blu, Cory Gunz, Mickey Factz, and Curren$y all got extreme underground recognition, as well as some success.
but then again, last years line up was stacked with true mcs, who were the shit.
this year…..eh.

This list is nowhere near as strong as last years group! Mainly because last year i didnt know much about any of them and when they came around it was fresh. With this years group, so many of them are already fairly well known and people know what their about. nippsey hustle and jay rock have been putting out decent material for the last year, pill has been getting a fair bit of spotlight recently with his last mixtape and J. Cole is talented enough without the label of xxl freshman around his neck, fashawn and wiz khalifa have both released albums over the last year with fashawn in particular getting great plaudits from this magazine. Surely once you release an album your no longer new so cant be considered a freshman? I dont know much about Freddie Gibbs, Donnis or Big Sean so they make it exciting. Finally OJ da Juiceman (who isnt good enough anyway) has already appeared on the cover of this publication! so whats fresh about that? i thought the whole point of this issue was to bring new unknown artists into the spotlight? not to boost the careers of artists already starting to establish themselves

Maaaan. How fuckin’ lame is this. I watched all those little video’s of these guys too. Mind you, they could’ve picked any of the new “mc’s” out there, and the list would still be shit. I hope someone saves hip hop in 2010, cause this shit has got me worried. And I would hate to say it, but Fashawn is not the “underground favorite”. That title belongs to Tech N9ne. Do the people at XXL even give a shit about hip hop, or do they just follow who/what’s hot, and who’s vids are played on MTV and BET? This shit’s gettin crazy.

I just gotta say one more thing. Do the people at XXL read these comments? Seriously, does anybody know? Cause I think if they gave a shit about the fans, and the people spending money on this SHIT, they would. How can someone, in charge of a company, come in to these “comments”, read ones like this, and be proud of what they’re doing. I know a lot of people hate, but did anyone stop and think why. There ain’t too much shit to love out there, music wise. XXL needs to pay more attention to the people, and not the fuckin’ big wiggs tellin’ them to put 50, and Gucci, and fuckin’ Lil’ Wayne on every fuckin’ cover. Do you guys actually think we like that shit? Maybe if you guys showcased some real good music, a bit more on the underground side of things, people would become more open/exposed to it, and hense, a step in the right direction for hip hop. C’mon!!!
Peace.

i agree halfway ngga, most of these rappers been out since way before 2009. Even J.Cole has been out since abuot 2006 at least, I think Cole deserves to be the top freshman this year. Nipsey stays, Big Sean is pretty dope, Jay Rock is G’d up and dope, Fashawn is aiit but i dont listen too much, and Juiceman? he deserves the spot dince he been doin his thing but i dont like his music. Cant knock his huslte though, some people wanna make money, not just rap. And if you didnt know, a lot of people down south love da juiceman, dude has a following more than half these lames. J.Cole really the only one i play though

I’m breaking this shit down one artist at a time. You want real reporting then I’m bringing it.
But First off,
No Kid Daytona nod!!!!!! WTF is this shit?!?! Daytona will pine box every and all challengers. You better get off XXL and DL that Air Born joint w/Bun B god damnit. Dude hangs right with Bun…so that’s really all you gotta say right there.
#1 WIZLE is NO FUCKING FRESHMAN. Maybe to XXL though, seeing as you lack any kind of mixtape savvy whatsoever. Only talent to ever put Pittsburgh on the map. Dude is freshmaker mentos status. And for a good while now.
#2 Nipsey Hussle’s sounds like a fake(r) ass The Game. Drake murders him on every song they collab on. Check out tha joint “killer”. So Ironic…Plus he’s just setting back his coast. Stop riding 1991’s dick already. Just boring shit.
4# Big Sean does nothing original/special/interesting. 2 Under Par at best. Lemme just go ahead and group Big Sean, or Double Bogey as I like to call him.
-&-
Jay Rock, whom I couldn’t listen to not even 1 track the whole way through on that Mick Boogie shit tape earfuck.
-&-
Dj Whoo Kid for being a whiney bitch. Stop screaming in everybody’s ear n shit! Nobody likes that shit! Yeah I got his bitch ass too.
Last and most definately least…
Orange Juice, the Juice Man - He’s not even a rapper, three words “ay” “ok” “brr”. Orange Juice is the best name you could think of? He’s a prerecorded sample XXL. Never more.
Those other cats I gotta check out real quick.

Big Sean is straight up nasty. J.Cole will be one of the most influential hip hop artists. Wiz Khalifa is innovative music, Niggas werent rapping on techno beats before he dropped “say yeah”. Nipsey Hussle and Jay Rock are the raw west coast rapper that they have been missing for a minute. Idk much about donnis but his recorded verse was fire, and he is on the same label where kid cudi got his start.Pill is raw and has earned the respect of the likes of Outkast.Freddie Gibbs has a dope midwest accent and flow, and all are dope lyrically. idk know much about Fashawn but i hope to get the issue and learn more. but OJ gotta go. the juice went bad. put in Chip Tha Rip, or Tyga Tyg

I been lisnen to J.Cole since The come up and the warm up and all of these songs are nice. He has the realist stories, realist metaphors, realist punchlines. his freestyles could be better but put a pen and his hand and hes comin for yah head. theres a reason why Jay-Z signed him to roc nation as firt artist knowing that the hip hop world would have an eye on J.Cole for that reason. Plus he could switch up his flow like 100 times on the same song. Thats also why i think he could beat out drake. J.Cole is a hungry muthafucker unlike drake. drake has the same flow on every song. soon as ppl start realizin that Drake not hungry and he got no other flow they will replace him. As for freddie gibbs, listen too miseducation of freddie gibbs and you tell me what you think of him. As for big sean listen to one song called say you will then tell me the mutha fucker aiint real. Back to J.cole. The nigga got a freestyle talkin bout his life at college not like that asher roth bullshit. when you can rhyme about anything besides cars, money, girls and clothes you nice. You can rhyme about these things but dont let your career depend on that stuff.J.Cole mingles with the freshman from last year like Wale, B.o.B, and Curen$$y. Big sean nice, Kanye West signed him. The same Kanye that blew up george Bush on mainstream T.V and got crazy on the V.M.A awards. need I say more motherfuckers.
half of Yah critics talkin shit with no arguments to back you up. ya jus say OJ is wack but no real reason. yah need to do yah own research instead of following what ya freinds is sayin. Following as mother fuckers, this aint twitter bitches.

Honestly, This list is some shit. the ‘09 cover was by far the best. Only Wiz, J.Cole, and Big Sean deserve, everyone else is just decent. But Those three will make it big, only problem with Wiz is he isn’t with a dominant label as Cole and Big Sean.
