Hip-hop loses it’s firm grip on the Billboard 200’s top 10 this week as Ghostface Killah’s new disc fails to move big units and Jay-Z slides to no. 6.
Despite selling 88,600 discs, Hov’s The Blueprint 3 was outshined by Barbara Streisand and Paramore’s first week numbers. After a month on the charts Jiggaman is a hair away from going platinum, with his overall stats standing at 996,700.
Falling from the no. 9 spot to no. 20 is So Far Gone, the abbreviated, retail version of Drake’s popular mixtape from earlier this year. The EP managed to push 31,500 units this week, making Drizzy’s three week total 141,200.
Two spots down at no. 22 is The E.N.D. by the Black Eyed Peas. Fans picked up 29,200 copies of the group’s latest disc this sales cycle, bringing their grand total to 1,169,500.
Tony Starks’ new LP, Ghostdini the Wizard of Poetry in Emerald City, debuted at no. 28. The revered Wu-Tang MC sold 19,200 discs in his first week.
At no. 31 is Kid Cudi, down 14 spots from last week. Man on the Moon: The End of Day sold 18,300 CDs this go-round, making his three week tally stand at 150,900.
Many debuts landed outside the top 40 this week. Atlanta duo Playaz Circle debuted at no. 74. Over 7,900 copies of their sophomore disc Flight 36: The Takeoff flew off the shelves this week. Brooklyn rapper Skyzoo landed at no. 126 with 4,500 in sales of his Duck Down disc Salvation and Mack 10’s Soft White sold 3,800 units of his new CD, coming it at no. 141.
Next week look for Fat Joe, Joe Budden, Saigon Jim Jones and Webstar to impact the charts. –Elan Mancini

No question. When I first heard Ghostdini I thought to myself this is some grown man romance rap. These new age tight pants n*ggas just ain’t gonna get it. Me and my lady were two stepping off that #6 joint “Stay.” A half hour later we were upstairs huffing and puffing. She even asked me to burn her a copy. Let me say that again: a chick asked me to burn her a copy of a Ghostface album. I told her hell nah, gave her my copy and bought another one.
F*ck Drake and all the metrosexuals that support him. And don’t give me none of that sh*t about you buying the album to f*ck with the broads ’cause the broads are feeling that Ghostdini. Cop that.

Comments cause I bought hard copies of most of these - Jay-Z backturners take note - for an umpteenth album this is solid, poppy-yes but couplets-crazy and worth the money - solid, solid.
Drake - he’s got skills, his album’s ominous tone is way different, and yes, you pay $7 to show TIs that they should invest in Drake getting a full-length of new material soon. Plus, I’m from Toronto and even though this ninja is from white-collar Rosedale, and I’m from no-collar Brampton - I’ll pay cause it’s good.
BEP - bought it for my gf - solid album made by robots - can’t mess with pop formula and will is a genius. (disagree - wiggle it in deeper).
Ghost - dissapointed - boring as hell - molasses as music - the reason you’re RL doesn’t vouch for this is because it goes as hard as dora on ice - also, people wanna actually hear ghost rap about him now, none of this roleplay theme b.s. damn! (maybe its just me - bought his last one too which was way better)
kid cudi - biggest dissapointment of the year - paid top $ for that cause his mixtape was great - CD like a cross between Rush 2112 and a tear-stained skidmark - dude’s been chomping on his niblets for too long that he thinks people wanna hear a string-laced rap-pra. wale is gonna kill cudi - first out the gates for cudi but it’ll be wale who’ll own this fall.
I also picked up Playaz Circle downtown and it sounds just like their last album - way to keep this bubbles up.
No bs - I paid money to get these cds so the least i can do is warn or push em.
What’s a skyzoo? Can you release a cd when your 10 fans just download your one-offs? if you can, explain this to me! i’ve got at least 10 people who like my raps (mom, gf, etc.)
Does my money go into mack 10’s pocket or directly into the west coast seniors home care facility?
Gebra will be back!

Wrong gkid12345 Hov is a brand now. He is a hip-pop brand that suburban kids keep in their ipods. I know the new album is mediocre by actual credible hip-hop standards but it is pop for gods sake. Pop makes watered down versions of all genres of music for the masses Jay-z’s new album is like going to Mcdonalds for a real hamburger like homemade. GTFOH

Mack 10 is washed up and needs to go help the next generation of west coast artists get on. He can continue to make records for his niche but he won’t sell than 10 to 20 thousand if he is lucky.
Playa circle is the master of picking great beats and hooks for southern hip-pop but lyrically they are meh too regional and uninteresting unless you are into shawty lo,OJ da juice man,Gucci man etc… then you will think they are dope(just plain wrong). But they are on DTP which hasn’t manage to do much with their artists besides the flagship artist Luda and the lucky break one hit wonder pop cat chingy. Now that chingy is back to thw world of fast food and Luda is going hollywood on us they are still signing lackluster acts as tax write offs like playa circle. These cats could be a great A&R team for the labratz or back woodz but as artists they just don’t got that thing to sell a whole album.
Ha kid Cudi flopped Kanye steals another rappers career. His boddy count is getting high. Rhymefest and Cons will never sell more units than a few thousand now.

The market is entirely too flooded with material. Much of it is weak too. So much so that the listner’s ear for good music is reduced to thinking that all of this free material is hot. Why spend money when you can listen to free cutting room material all the time. Cutting room left overs that wouldn’t make the grade on a proper album, yet we think it’s way better than it is.

I think Kanye’s problem is that he thinks every producer/songwriter/coffee-getting kid deserves their time with the mic, when mostly thes guys should just stick to what they do best - kanye’s lucky enough that he had the talent to be up front.
Just like in rock - don’t let the drummer start writing songs or the band’s done (yeah, i know rhymef, cons, etc. are good, but blah - boring)
Cudi had a chance because he had all the tools in the shed, but smellin his own farts put the boy up on the moon - and that’s where he recorded in blah cd).
Cool poster in it though. There’s $15 done and did.

$ykotic/Don McCaine says:
I told y’all last week I wasn’t feeling the Ghostdini CD like that. I just copped 4 cuts off of iTunes.
It ain’t the recession, or the internet’s or haters. Follow me now:
Mainstream rap(NOT HIP HOP) is dying. There’s too much sh*t out. Waaaayyyy too many rappers dropping or coming out. An album these days only has about 4-8 weeks of shelf life, then it’s forgotten. Radio is only playing the “elite” artist’s stuff pushed(payola) by the labels. The labels are losing $. Like ENLIGHTENED has been saying, there’s waaaaayyyyy too much free music out via mixtapes.
Everyone cannot be a rapper. It’s OK just to be a ghostwriter, or behind the scenes, or behind a desk(e.g. ACE HOOD. Do graphic design for Def Jam kiddo. You will never blow up. It’s OK.)
Luther Vandross was a backup singer for years. Patrice Rushen was a songwriter, BIG DADDY KANE WAS A GHOSTWRITER.
Some cats need to stop(Jim Jones/Mack 10), and use their sources to find the next dude who is qualified to come up successfully. A & R’s get good $. Rob Browz(cut loose by Universal) should have never gotten an artist deal, but a PUBLISHING DEAL, he could always cut a single & get $.
Them weekly #’s ain’t gonna rise for a while. Like Interscope will be doing next year, label’s will be scrapping their WHOLE ROSTERS, and starting over fresh. With one or ten rappers.
Prepare for the death(revival?) of mainstream rap. Every other form of music has suffered the same fate.
PEACE

this album ain’t tony stark’s best, but it’s better than a lot of the shit out there. but record sales don’t mean shit anymore anyway, so i don’t put much stock by them. m.o.p. only sold 2,000 cd’s their first week, and can’t nobody say that they’re wack, that cd was straight fire. hell, after three weeks kid cudi sold more than raekwon did, but he’s not a better rapper. those that buy cds aren’t hip-hop heads, they’re looking for more mainstream shit.

Bigger picture…rappers need better promotion I mean, they keep trying too hard to make music that is universally marketable , instead of doing music that is universally enjoyable

Ghost is one of those rappers who sells units as he continues to tour sort of like the roots so he’ll still get his cheese because he stays getting booked for shows. Jay is touring and fans who have yet to cop go and cop usually after watching some one perform live. Kid cudi ? I expected that because the cats who have there backpacks and abstarct t-shirts and sneekers don’t cop albums they download. Mack 10 ? Really? this guy could have sold that in ingelwood cal alone. Playa’z circle defjam or not who in the streets is talking about them cats ? so no matter the lable they would have moved 8-9k the first week Drake needs to stop fuckin around and release the full length while his buzz is crazy because you can wait too long until the fans don’t give a fuck. What ever happened to Saigon and Papoose ? let me guess there still coming soon huh ?

I mean there are some cuts on the cd - Stapleton sex, Guesthouse ft. FABO, and the Back like that remix with a hot verse from Kanye - but I couldnt see myself going back to this after my original listen. I fuck with Ghost though, Supreme Clientele, Fishscale, Pretty Toney, plus all the classic Wu shit….this just doesnt hold up compared to those.
