• Clipse Claim “Best Duo Ever” Title At NY Sneaker Pimps Concert

Monday Jun 29 10:39 AM CDT posted by xxl staff

The Clipse proclaimed itself the best rap twosome ever Friday night (June 26) as they closed out Sneaker Pimps’s New York City tour stop.

“Third times a charm from the best duo ever,” promised Malice, as he and Pusha T performed “Kinda Like A Big Deal,” the lead single from their forthcoming third album, Til The Casket Drops.

The Thorton Brothers were among a handful of rap acts represented on the night’s bill, which also featured Midwestern pair The Cool Kids, OutKast half Big Boi, D-Block general Jadakiss and XXL alum Wale.

Set in Manhattan’s Terminal 5, the event was a hipster heaven. Behind the stage was a caged off skateboard ramp, where boarders kick-pushed from side to side. Meanwhile, in the venue’s standing room, graphic tees and exclusive Nike Dunks and Jordan kicks were on display for guests to purchase.

Performances were tailored to the sneaker culture, too. Wale, the night’s first notable performer, joked with the crowd about shoe sizes before launching into his radar-evading smash “Nike Boots.” Other tracks, like “Chillin’” and “Go Mode” got lukewarm responses, with one daring audience member demanding Wale exit the stage.

“I got some niggas that will beat the shit out of you right now,” Wale told the detractor, before leading the rest of the crowd into a back-and-forth chant of “Hater.”

The Cool Kids were next on the lineup, rocking bass-heavy, cult favorites like “I (Mikey) Rock,” “Black Mags,” and “88,” which was mixed with Slick Rick’s “Children’s Story” melody.

While Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish’s somewhat repetitive old-school vibe grew tiring, hometown rep Jadakiss was the clear crowd favorite. Fans were drunk off nostalgia as the Lox star breezed though classics like “Wild Out” and “Blood Pressure,” as well as newer cuts like “Smoking Gun” and “Who’s Real.”

Jada’s energy lacked, but Big Boi injected a much-needed jolt, keeping the remnants of the slimming crowd dancing to “I Like The Way You Move” and “Kryptonite,” and previewing tracks from his upcoming album, Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty.

Short on time, Clipse kept it short and street, emerging on stage to their modern classic “Grindin’” followed by “Keys Open Doors.”

Sneaker Pimps, the world’s largest touring sneaker hip-hop lifestyle exhibition, hits Philadelphia next, on July 9. –John Kennedy

I love Clipse but Outkast & Mobb Deep have better careers [Lord Willin' & Hell Hath lose in a battle with Infamous & Hell On Earth].

    Meth & Red?

And Run-DMC was a trio but only 2 of them rhymed…

Those 2 mobb cds easily kill lord willin and hell hath! AND WE DON’T NEED TO MENTION MURDA MUSIC!

I LIKE THE CLIPSE THO! but they have to make a certified classic before they can be considered the best anything! UGK, BALL AND G, RUN DMC, EVEN RAE AND GHOST, are way ahead of the clipse right now!

    Detroit - what’s good?!

I meant to insert the word ‘easily’ in there too. And you’re dead on about Murda Muzik…that was a hott album.

    Prodigy ‘94 - ‘99 >>>>> Pusha & Malice together. All day.

And I was going to say Rae & Ghost. You could call Cuban Linx a duo album and Ironman was the two of them + Cappa. This isn’t even close…

Outkast is tops, for the most part right now. That was the “last” great duo, career-wise. Can’t argue with bonafide success. Even still, Mobb, M&R, Ghost & Rae will rap crop circles around Clipse.

No hate, but those are awfully big air force 1’s to fill. Or, Bathing Apes.

did you like dre’s verse on that ugk single? to me, that verse was crazy, and it showed why dre is considered one of the best in the game. his rhyme patterns are original and his subject matter is very real. 95% of the rappers in the game use unoriginal rhyme schemes and subject matter. big boi is good too, and as a duo, their music is always a breath of fresh air. THEY ARE THE 2K VERSION OF A TRIBE CALLED QUEST!

    DetroitDr***r says:

I’ve always liked Big Boi a lil more but Andre’s rhyme scheme topics etc. are original but to me its just creatively expressed words that have no meaning. Not taking anythong away from his ability to put words together Idk I guess Im sayin he doesnt really rap about anything. At least anything Id like to hear.

not tryin to diss, but you have to be like 22! many people thought that big boi was the best in outkast after their 1st cd! how bout big’s verse in “so fresh so clean”, or “red velvet”, or “snappin and trappin”. and as for pimp c…nigga be serious! go check “murda” or “3 16s” or “high life”! and as for prodigy…he’s one of the best mc’s ever, at least top 15 or 20.

QUIET STORM >>>> THE CLIPSE WHOLE CAREER!

i like the clipse, but let’s not take it too far. “grindin” was their biggest hit and it left a lot to be desired lyrically.

Allow it! I’m 19 and a london dude but the net has been a hip hop revelation. The Clipse are nice but have they made anything near ATLiens? Moment Of Truth? Hell On Earth? Heck they are like on Red and Meth’s sort of level and they are solo artists! I would go as far as to say OB4CL>The Clipse careers.

Not even to talk of EPMD, i prefer MOP as well. The hip hop is there on the net age aint even an obstacle imo. It’s too easy for artists to say they are the illest nowadays, this is more disrespectful to other duos than what Budden said about Meth.

What qualifies for a true duo?? 2 Emcees or 1 MC and a DJ. Clarification has to be made on this issue. Thus, RUN DMC would be disqualified cause of JMJ. EPMD had DJ K La Boss and DJ Scratch. Does anyone understand where I’m going with this???

IMO a duo is 2 MC’s. Having a DJ or producer in the group should not be a disqualifying factor. With that being said….

    1.) Run-DMC
    2.) ATCQ
    2.) EPMD
    2.) Outkast
    5.) UGK
    6.) Mobb Deep
    7.) Rae & Ghost
    8.) Dogg Pound
    9.) Ball & G
    10.)BlackStar

Very Honorable Mention: Field Mob (The world slept….)

I would say I’m the biggest Clipse Fan ever and not to sound like a dick rider but I honestly believe they ARE the best duo ever. Im going to take into account that they came out on da scene i think in 97′ with Exclusive audio footage. They been in da game for well over 10 years. Its not like they some new jacks spittin dumb shit. With that being said, They are lyrically on another level (especially when rapping about drugs) Lets be honest…most rappers talk about drugs to me they all sound the same and thats where the clipse set themselves apart. Methaphors, similies, double entondres all that shit. Lord willin is a classic and so is hell hath no fury. and even though this has nothing to do with their lyrical ability but they have their own clothing line “play cloths” is hot. nobody is lookin for clothes by mobb depp, def not m.o.p, or meth and red, and not outkast.
