• Raekwon Signs With EMI, Finds Home For Cuban Linx 2

Monday Mar 30 10:52 AM CDT posted by xxl staff

During a recent interview with Connecticut radio station 93.7, Wu-Tang rapper Raekwon revealed his new label home.

Rae told the “On Air Idiots” show that the long delayed sequel to his seminal 1995 solo debut Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is finished and will be released on EMI Records. “Project is vicious right now, it’s done,” he said. “I just closed my deal, you the first one to know, that I signed with EMI right now. I just signed off yesterday made everything official so EMI is the home right now. They the ones that’s paying me they gave me a nice piece of what I needed.” [Watch Below]

When asked if Ghostface Killah - his longtime partner-in-rhyme and co-star on the original Cuban Linx – will be involved, Rae said he wanted to give others rappers a chance to shine. “Ghost gonna be up but at the end of the day it’s gonna be raw hip-hop, B,” he explained. “When I made this album I made it to be a classic, I didn’t look at it as having Ghost all the way through it like that, because it don’t make it special if I don’t give other brothers a shot.”

OB4CL 2 has been in the making for several years now. At one point, Rae was even signed to Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Records with Busta Rhymes serving as the disc’s executive producer, but that eventually fell through.

Set to feature production by Dre, J Dilla, Pete Rock, Erik Sermon and Wu-Tang mastermind the Rza, the album is reportedly set to drop sometime this summer. – Elan Mancini

Are you serious? That dude couldn’t even get his own sh*t straight.

Good luck with the new situation Rae.

What the fuck, Dre! I just don’t understand, man! Rae, Busta, Eve, Rakim (!!!), Stat Quo, Obie Trice… the list goes on. Even your OWN shit (Detox)!

What is going on at Aftermath? Where do I send my resume, because I guarantee you that I can get shit put out faster if I was over there!

    Talking points memos (no O’Reilly):

    1. The “record-buying”/legally downloading teenage demographic ain’t checkin’ for Wu-Tang (they can still sell out concerts, though).
This project is mad late, even those who expected it don’t care no mo’.

    2. Fuck Dr. Dre.

    3. Rae’s proper albums after OB4CL sucked. He still got skills, but isn’t/never was an exciting artist.

    4. EMI is a UK company, that bought Capitol and Caroline Distribution. Only other rappers there are Ice Cube, Fat Joe and Twista? Not a good look (EMI should start a fit club).
They DO put out albums, though.

    14 years.

Kind of sounding like he diplomatically shitted on Ghost, though, but I understand where he’s coming from.

Curious to see how it sounds with no RZA, but it may be just the change in direction he needs. I never understood what Dre planned on doing with him anyway.

I remember all of the Wu solo albums after RZA decided not to produce them and we got such catastrophes as “Immobilarity,” “4:21 The Day After,” and others…

    BGZ says:

4:21 could possibly be the best post-1997 Wu-Tang album not done by Ghost (alongside The W).
The RZA did 4 tracks and the intro on it, one of his biggest recent contribution on a solo album.
They should just lock him back in his room in Clifton to produce whole albums again instead of running around Hollywood with System of a Down.

It says RZA gonna be there, just not in control of everything. Which is still a shame, since OBFCL was great because of RZA’s focus. Rae’s other albums lack a theme to tie them together.

“Rae said he wanted to give other rappers a chance to shine”.

Translation: Guest appearances by his most trusted weed carriers. I swear, these guys just don’t know when to stick to the formula that works. Switching things up didn’t work for Rae post OB4CL (i.e. Immobilarity and Lex Diamond Story), so why the hell would he take the chance of switching things up with a highly anticipated sequel? Its not as if Ghost has fallen off. On the contrary. He’s had more notable releases over the years than any member of the clan.

Damn, the last bit of hope that I had for this album has just died.

This album is 10 years to late. Plus u gotta stick to the script. Ghost should be on at least five songs. These guys egos r so huge they fuck up they own projects! He should just 4get the album altogether. It’s like Scorsese remaking Goodfellas and having none of the original actors in it.

Sounds Good but I’ll believe it when I see it on a store shelf. As for Ghost not being on it through out it could go either way. It could give fans a chance to hear something new but will definitely take away from the magic that Rae, Ghost & Cappa had on the OB4CL and Ghost’s Ironman but hey Ghost did it with out Rae and struck gold so who knows maybe he’ll do the same.

Bullshiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit ! This album is coming 14 years after the original so there’s no way in hell it can be a classic like the first because things have changed and he can’t recreate the same vibe he had making the first one 14 years ago,so he shouldn’t be stupid by calling it that because expectations are high and fans have given up on him years ago.2 Ghost helped make the first one a classic so not having him co star is a strike against the album right there. Give other cats time to shine on a mixtape or compilation. I think he knows that Ghost has been more consistant and overall better lyrically since Supreme Clientel. Everyone think about it. Nas said he can’t create another illmatic,Jay said he could never do resonable doubt 2 so if Rae doesn’t do it hotter or as good as the first why call it part 2 ? I smell Gimmick.

Damn, sounds like there are some haters. I”m gonna trust Rae on this one. All the features he’s been on of late have been solid, and there’s no reason to believe he can’t make another great album. The word “classic” is way overused nowadays, and if Rae can drop a great album then I’m more than cool with that. I can’t remember the last time I heard a classic album. Granted I’ve heard a lot of great ones over the last few years (hell hath no fury, be, kanye’s shit all comes to mind) but i dunno if I would label anything classic. Just expect to hear a dope album from Rae and I’m confident that he’ll deliver that.

    @ EBE725,

No hate here, just stating the facts. I had high expectations for Rae. People doubted him when he tried to go at BIG, but I had all the confidence in the world in him. He could even hold his own lyrically with an early ’90’s era NAS, which was no easy feat. But every time I hear something new about this album, I wish I hadn’t.

Only good joint Rae put out after the first OB4CL was Polluted Water with his Ice Water Inc. group. Came out last year and I guess I was one of the only people that bought it. It wasn’t no OB4CL, but he was on almost every track and the production was pretty tight for an indy release (Babygrande Records).

Ice Water inc ? you gotta be kidding me. Another example of Rappers putting on there homies just because there friends but posses no lyrical talent at all. I thinks that’s why Rae did the album so he could shine over a bunch of lames because he can’t hold his own any more with some one like Ghost. Ghost will and has murderrrrrrrrrrrrred that dude countless times.
