Rap longevity apparently isn’t on Kid Cudi’s 10-year plan. Per a blog entry written on kidcudi.com, the New York-based rapper (by way of Cleveland) will call it quits after his first album drops. A part of Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music family, CuDi appeared on Yeezy’s 808s & Heartbreak, has been touring with the superstar and recently released a video for his smash hit, “Day ‘N’ Nite.” But Cudi’s current success has apparently taken as toll on him.
“After the release of my first LP this summer, I am not making any more solo albums,” he wrote in all caps. “I am falling back on being an artist. The drama that comes with it is more overwhelming than the shit I was dealing with when I was piss poor broke.”
“My friends get mad at me, say I’ve changed,” he continued. “One of the only homies I got in this game, Wale, is worried about me ’cause of shit he hears. Like, WTF? Who can say I’m being Hollywood? I’m not around anyone but Plain Pat and Emile. Who can say that shit? Motherfuckas talkin’ shit here and there, spreadin’ rumors, makin’ jokes, tryin’ to judge me, and for what?”
Cudi, who recently signed with Universal Motown, plans to drop the mic to focus on his acting career. He’s already set to star in How to Make It in America, an HBO comedy pilot following three twentysomethings trying to make it in the big apple. Shooting for the series, which will be executive produced by Mark Wahlberg, starts in August. There’s no word on when Cudi’s solo debut, Man on the Moon: The Guardians, will hit stores. - Marvin Brandon

Not saying that was a good album, because it wasnt, but if there had to be an album like that kid cudi did it. If A Kid Named Cudi wasnt a good mixtape wasnt the mixtape then what was? The only one i can think of would be Viva La Hova.

Everybody need to take heed to this cat’s article; especially those who currently want to be career artists. So let me get this straight. Dude is quitting music because of the drama, only to go into a career with potential for even more drama? Music is an audio-only medium, people don’t see your face whenever they listen to your songs. Imagine what happens when your ass is on a TV show once a week. The drama aint gonna stop son. Bad choice.

Yayza…You’re right man, the drama is amplified in the acting sector. But, he may just be more of a actor than he is a musical artist and will have more passion to keep him goin in that arena. Either way, his prior involvement in the overall music and entertainment industry will have doors already cracked open for him to walk through. It’s good that he put it on blast rather than fade into oblivion; that way, he can feed off a lil bit of controversy if he does decide to stay in after the album. By the way, it’s the label’s fault for puttin that Day and Nite mess out there as his callin card. That fucked him waaay up with traditional Hip Hop fans.

KSA1001…You’re right bruh, “Not everyone is from the hood, and not every(one) grew up on just hip-hop/rap.” But this is XXL and the topic is more than likely goin to be Hip Hop related and rap artists, no matter what new shit they’re comin with, should always come with bona fide Hip Hop. Period.

KSA1001 says:
Ok then i guess my question would be what is bona fide hip hop? B/c most stuff out today straddles multiple genres, but i wouldn’t say it’s not hip-hop per se. Lord knows Lil’ Wayne and Wu-Tang have been mixing in rock/guitar influences in their music. T.I.’s album while hot, has mostly pop leaning songs/colabos [whatever you like/live your life/dead and gone]. Everyone wants to sing using auto-tune..so where is the line drawn?
Reply
March 16th, 2009

LB says:
Bona Fide hip hop always uses rap (whether good or bad rap) as the main mode of oral communication, and almost always utilizes certain percussions and drums in the music itself (the keys, strings, etc. are almost a matter of choice or taste; thus, genre). And using that framework, the plite or the height of a culture is told through several different means. The line is drawn when you have a guy playin somethin that’s bona fide rock like Led Zepplin, or bona fide bubble gum pop like Backstreet Boyz, and stampin a Hip Hop label on it just because the people so happen to wear some baggy jeans or have a few references to hip hop. That “Day and Nite” was more of a bad mix of R&B and Hip Hop. He should’ve had a broad sing on it.

I AM SICK AND TIRED OF RAPPERS TALKING ABOUT RETIRING WHEN IN MOST CASES THEY DON’T. TO USE THE WORD RETIREMENT MEANS [BY MY DEFINITION] THAT YOU ARE FINISHING A LONG CAREER IN A FIELD. I AM JUST WAITING FOR A 18YR OLD KID TO SAY “MAN, AFTER I FINISH THESE FRIES AND FLIP THESE LAST TWO FLAME-BROILED PATTIES, I AM GOING TO RETIRE FROM THIS FAST FOOD.” JUST BE HONEST AND SAY THAT THE STRAINS OF MAKING MUSIC IS TOO MUCH FOR ME AND THIS IS NOT SOMETHING I WANT TO PURSUE. MASE, $HORT, JAY AND NOW IT SEEMS EVERYBODY ELSE WANTS TO SAY THIS LIKE IT’S SOME BIG EVENT. GUESS WHAT? IT’S NOT! THERE IS NO ONE CURRENTLY RAPPING OR NO LONGER RAPPING THAT I WOULD GIVE A HALF A F@CK IF THEY NO LONGER MADE MUSIC. ALL THESE DRAMA QUEENS SHOULD TAKE THIS AS LESSON WITH THEM - “IF YOU ARE NO LONGER INTERESTED IN RECORDING MUSIC THEN JUST DON’T AND SIMPLY WALK AWAY, GET A 9-5 THAT YOU CAN HANDLE, STOP CRYING, MAN UP AND STOP ACTING LIKE YOUR LIFE IS AN EPISODE OF “THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS”. STOP SAYING WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO DO AND JUST DO IT.

It’s not for everybody. He probably built up this imaginary world where a little fame & notoriety would have made everything perfect in his life.
No dice.
Who knows how much time & energy he invested into this before he came to a conclusion that could have been reached by paying way more attention to hundreds of songs over the years.
I’m pretty sure he hasn’t been skipping through life drama-free, so I don’t see why this would be the cause for such a darmatic announcement. Common sense should have told him that this would only magnify what he’s already complaining about.
Good luck Cudi. Nobody said life was easy. If they did, go demand a refund.

Sure, hip-hop music ain’t as exciting and as financially profitable as it used to be, but why even start then?
If you invested the same time and energy into something else like learning, you might have got a degree or something by now.
What happened to the likes of Jay-Z, Twista and DMX who grinded for a decade before they got mainstream recognition?
These fools had it too easy.

You guys know he’s not gonna quit. He’s just going through a rough time in his career. He’s probably gonna regret saying this stuff later on anyways.
As for everybody else on here that’s glad he’s leaving, you guys are the reason hip-hop is dying. And I’m being straight up. I mean, I don’t care if you like him or not honestly, but you guys just want him to get out because he’s different. He’s a unique rapper and you don’t like how that sounds. He doesn’t sound like you’re idol Sheek Louch or your favorite rapper Birdman. He’s not talking about pushing drugs (’pushing’, not doing) or smackin hoes. Just listen to his songs. You are who he’s talking about!
I’m just trying to show you guys what you’re obviously not seeing. Cudi is just another aspect of hip-hop and you don’t like him because he’s different.
Fine, let’s just have it your way and we’ll watch hip-hop burn to the ground together…
