Hip-Hop Congress to Reimburse Police Dept. for dead prez Riot Damage

Thursday Feb 28 12:06 PM CST posted by xxl staff

The Hip-Hop Congress, a non-profit organization, plans to release a new CD to raise money to reimburse the Thurston County Sheriff’s office for damages caused during a riot at a recent dead prez show. The album will feature music from a variety of artists, including dead prez, and will be available nationwide. As previously reported, the arrest of a concertgoer during a February 15 show at Evergreen State College in Washington escalated into an all out riot, resulting in overturned police cars and property damage. Several students and outside sources have questioned the chain of events as described by local media outlets. The Hip-Hop Congress launched its own independent investigation into the incident and have compiled a video called “It’s Bigger than Hip Hop: The Truth Behind the Evergreen Uprising, ”that they feel best outlines what exactly occurred at the show. According to The Olympian, Congress president Shamako Noble will be hosting an open forum on Friday (February 29) to discuss the incident and screen the video. “We offer the results of our inquiry not only as community media producers and advocates of Hip Hop culture, but also as supporters of the movement towards universal restorative justice and proactive restitution,” says Julie Chang Schulman, Northwest Regional Director for Hip Hop Congress. “We are concerned with what seems to be the omission of the Olympia Police Department’s role in this incident. If the objective is accountability and preserving the safety of this community, this should be just as important a part of the investigative process as finding those responsible for damages, especially given the preexisting tension between OPD and the Evergreen community.”

Wow you guys are truely some hardcore badass gangstas! And smart too! You must listen to a whole lot of conscious rappers that really know what’s going on out there like Cam’ron! F those gosh darn police man! Fight the freakin power!

It’s real easy to say that stupid shit hidin in your moms basement wit your geeky selves behind a computer. I’ve had cops pointin guns at me before. At the same time, when they was doin that I was up to no good, so it is what it is. Some probably have had worse things happen than me when they weren’t even doin anything. I’ve had cops surround me and my friends and search us for no good reason (except that my friend “fit the description”). I’ve had friends get beat up by cops when I was a kid (but again they were up to know good). My local police department has actually been harassing me for the last year and a half…..

And you know what? I still don’t understand this f the police bullshit. Cops is human beings. Some people are good, some are bad. Some do their job correctly, others do not. Like politicians and other people with power, some are responsible others are corrupted.

The fact of the matter is most cops are soldiers on the streets that are willing to die for you and me. When you or your friends or your family members are in danger, you can depend on them to come rushing to face it.

Maybe the police department was wrong in this incident. Maybe they weren’t. I don’t know. I don’t make up my mind on things and get caught up in any hype, unless there is facts to back it up.

[...] Rather than forcing the students involved to get jobs, “the Hip-Hop Congress, a non-profit organization, plans to release a new CD to raise money to reimburse the Thurston County Sheriff’s office for damages caused during a riot at a recent dead prez show” at Olympia, Washington’s Evergreen State College where a police cruiser was destroyed and rioting kids made off with laptops and radar guns. The CD will be coming soon to a store near you, but in the meantime, the Hip-Hop Congress has also produced this looooooong (but at least admirably thorough) video attempting to debunk local news coverage of the event and to pinpoint po-po accountability, though I mostly found it notable for reminding me of Evergreen’s vaguely depressing, Soviet bloc architectural choices.
