• Jay-Z Steps Down As Def Jam President

Monday Dec 24 6:09 PM CST posted by xxl staff

After months of speculation surrounding the future of his position, rapper/executive Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter announced today (December 24) that he will be stepping down from his job as Def Jam’s president when his contract expires at the end of 2007. Music industry website Hits Daily Double reports that, although he will no longer oversee the label, he will remain a Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam recording artist. While rumors have circulated over the last few years about him joining former colleagues Lyor Cohen or Rick Rubin at the Warner Music Group or Columbia Records, respectively, no details were released about Jay taking on a new executive position in the future.

Jay stated: “I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have served as President of such a culturally-defining label as Def Jam over the last three years. During that time, I’ve had the pleasure of working with many of the world’s most dynamic artists and many of the most dedicated and talented executives in the music business today, including [IDJMG Chairman/ CEO] Antonio “L.A.” Reid. But now it’s time for me to take on new challenges. I am pleased to have had the opportunity to build upon the Def Jam legacy, helping to move the company into a new era of artistic success.”

L.A. Reid also added: “Jay made it clear to us that he feels the time has come to take on different challenges in his life. While we regret his decision to move on, we certainly respect it. Since Jay joined us as President of Def Jam in 2005, we have all benefited from his leadership, sense of spirit and invaluable friendship. While he will continue to be one of our signature artists, he will nonetheless be missed in this executive capacity. The entire Island Def Jam family joins me in wishing him the very best in all of his future business endeavors.”

First……and I just wanna say…that I think both parties will grow from the split…Def Jam artist no longer have Jay to blame for lackluster sales…or the perceived “Diddy” effect…having an artist as a label head is when said Head still wants to put out records…Jay is an amzing businessman and will probably go do his things at Sony or go over to Columbia with Rick Ruben…with his maters in hand mind you…and now all those guys that feel like the head honcho was consuming to big a piece of the marketing dollars cant get their fair share….Now we really get to see if A. the older artist still have their relevance and a dedicated fanbase, and B. the younger artists hopefully will be properly groomed and released to see if they sink or swim.

Good move for jay, i think he needs to go in his own direction and set up another machine. Even though jay was the president @ DJ, he was also clearly the best hiphop artist for the label and its about time he prep us for the future of music. At the same time DJ needs to look for a replacement because this will definitely be a major loss for a major label.(musically/busniess)

jay wasn’t right for that kind of position.

i think that L.A. thought that since he kept Def Jam afloat as an artist in 90’s - current, that he could take post as an executive.

i really can’t say, but that’s my guess. i really don’t want to hear anything more from LL, but understand why he left def jam.

LL came before jay and stayed faithful to the label, never leaving until jigga was promoted.

    i wonder why??

jay has all the opportunity in the world, maybe having so many hats with clothing, club ownership, etc., takes its toll.

    hmm.

Nothing will change with Def Jam because L.A. Reid was running the label all along. Jay-Z was just the puppet taking the shots when everything wasn’t going well. While Jay-Z was trying to make it look like he was running things, he really was getting played by L.A. Reid. L.A. Reid is the smart one because he let Jay-Z take all the negative shots.

He wasn’t the “REAL” president of Def Jam anyway. Anyone who was working there will tell you on the low that L.A. Reid really ran shit there. Jay-Z was the figurehead to smooth things over between the rappers & the L.A. Reid who’s only real experience is dealing with R&B artists & not rappers. Jay-Z got all the blame while L.A. Reid was the real Wizard of Oz. The question now is who does L.A. Reid hire to become his new shield.

Well, I think the move will be great for both sides here. Both will move forward and I wish both side much continued success. But, I always wondered what all the fuss of publicity for artists was about. The complaint was that other artists don’t get publicity because Jay was only worried about publicity for himself. In case you didn’t notice, Jay doesn’t have to do any real publicity for his records. Every November, you look for a Jay-Z record and you look for it becasue he’s Jay-Z and he’s talented. Or, if you don’t like him, then you know evey November that you’re going to get sick and tired of all the hype over that dude Jay-Z that you can’t stand. Either way, he’s going to sell because he’s Jay. If you’re hot, you don’t need a lot of publicity to sell. Some artists need to realize that you need to step your (rhyme/rap)game up and do some work for self to maintain your relevance, fan base, and hotness factor or you’ll “fall off’, per se. Ask Common, who some say fell off but came back with Be. With Jay-Z no longer around, if the same artists don’t sell, now what? Take a page from Kanye and create your own buzz.
    Late.

    Jay was a great leader:
    The Roots- Game Theory
Method Man- The Day After 4:21
    Memphis Bleek- 534
    Nas- Hip-Hop is Dead
    Kanye West- Late Registration
    Kanye West- Graduation
    Beanie Sigel- The Solution
    Freeway- Free At Last
    Ghostface- Fishscale
    Ghostface- The Big Doe Rehab
    Jay-Z- Kingdom Come
    Jay-Z- American Gangster
    Ludacris- Release Therapy
    Fabolous- From Somethin to Nothin
All these albums were decent, Jay was also responsible for breaking new artist like Rick Ross & Young Jeezy. He bought Nas & Fabolous to Def Jam also. He Brought Rihanna & Neyo to Def Jam. So what LL Cool J & Joe Buddens weren’t happy. Jay was a scary judge of talent & he maximized every artist’s full potential.

    BOOGOLOGY says:

That question should be irrelevant because not too many people buy records now a days. It’s either downloaded from the net or burned from the actual LP. Most records are sold because of the drama or exposure centered around the artist before they drop an album. Many of the artist (rappers) on Def Jam have already made their mark in history. I can listen to them all day, but the youth now is not going to feel that. Times are different so many artist have to come at the masses with a different approach. Not saying they have to change their morels and values to gain success. They should think about it from an artistic perspective. Plus, the way they deliver the “message”. All of them have talent and none of them sound nor looked the same. The labels can only promote what you can give them. If you give them some bullshit, than that is what your album is going to perseived as… 1NE!

WHATS THE POINT OF BEING ON A BIG LABEL? The point is having the backing of the lable when you release a project so that you get promotion. The complaint is/was (1) Some people didn’t get any promotion, (2) Some people didn’t get any Album put out period!

Jay gets the blame, why? Cause he’s a rapper, and he supposed to know where rappers frustration comes from. He’s SUPPOSED to, but he DOSEN’T.

Jay could release an album tomorrow, no promotion, no warning, and sell a Mil, easy. A lable executive should KNOW the difference between an artist like himself, and an artist that needs financial backing from the lable to have a successful record. Yea Common gained alot more respect recently, but that street buz ain’t make him sell that many more records. Common ain’t no Kanye, or no Jay, or no Beyonce’. Not all artists sit in that space. NOT ALL ARTISTS ARE AUTOMATIC!!

I would NOT be surprised, if Jay ain’t get the boot intentionally. They garnered over 20 Grammy nods, but from 3 core artists; Himself, Kanye and Rhianna (+ Neyo). I must say that deserves commending but so what…Half the other artists done jumped ship, and had a bunch of flopped albums. Ya’ll think the powers that be ain’t notice all this is going down? Ya’ll think that everybody saying the same thing could be wrong? You haven’t been calling the “Audibles” as well as you think Jigga. And guess what, “they” STILL call the shots. Guess which calling has more weight.

damn, some people didnt have anything better to do on christmas morning than respond to this? thats kinda sad. back to the subject, i feel what everybody said here. meth, the roots, LL, buddens, and dont forget n.o.r.e. left the label and all blaimed jay-z for no promotion on there albums or for not having albums at all. also people forget that LL’s DEFinition album that dropped before jay-z took over as president flopped too. i wont credit jay for the success of rhianna and neyo cause we all know la reid can market a pop act, and thats what he did with them. la dont know shit about street hip hop, outkast obviously dont count. and thats where the sales are lacking. ross went gold but looks like hes gonna be a 1 hit wonder. jeezy went platinum back to back thats a perfect example of jays hit or miss track record during his run as pres, when you think of all the flops that came out in between these successes. its gonna be interesting to see what all these artists do when they no longer have a big name scape goat to blame there flops on.

I’m so sick and tired of reading shit about why albums don’t sell. Every single one of you Mother F@#$kers knew when every songle album came out, all yall knew where to buy them…the only reason why albums don’t sell is because “NIGGAZ DON”T BUY ALBUMS” and the only ones that barely sold over a million or is because they have a very wide fan base. The only thing that are selling, and I know you niggaz aren’t payin attention, Country music (think about it) White people support each other, and we should do the same.

Why do we as black ppl hate on each other so much….imagine a united hip hop. Let me see wat happens when a white dude takes over (and I’m not being racial) but we need more black men and women in power

Yall actin like a bunch of retards, I blame it on the school system.

Good Job Sean Carter, you definately did your thing in my view.

    P.S. I actually buy albums!!!!!!

Wateva happenend 2 promoting yo damn self? For the artist that have been in da game 4 a minute, if the label aint promoting u how u think they should, then u gotta promote urself. Jay did wat he did while at Def Jam. now its time 4 him 2 move on. But while he was there, they had success. Luda, Jeezy, Fab, Nas, Ne-yo, Rihanna. Thats about it. yea people were sleepin on Ghostface & Method Man. But shyt u cant just sit back n expect 2 get pampered as far as promotion. Its the bench players not gettin their P/T. Ok now dat Jay gone, these otha players can get in da game n shine. So lets see if u can really shine or u gon continue 2 blame others.
