XXL Reviews Snoop Dogg’s Malice N Wonderland

Snoop Dogg
Malice N Wonderland
Capitol

Beats: L
Lyrics: L
Originality: M

Snoop Dogg’s tenth solo album, Malice N Wonderland, sounds like it should be dangerous. But instead of rapping about blunts, bottles and bitches, as he has done over the course of his 16-year career, Snoop settles on using his latest project to appeal to an audience that was still rockin’ diapers when his classic album Doggystyle debuted in 1993.

At times, that’s actually a good thing for the Doggfather. On the lead single, “I Wanna Rock,” West Coast producer Scoop DeVille samples Rob Base and DJ E-Z Rock’s “It Takes Two” to create a song that’s well-equipped to handle Los Angeles’ popular dance craze, Jerkin’. Similarly, Snoop’s hardened persona takes a backseat to the airy hook provided by the The-Dream on “Gangsta Luv,” with the combo creating a song that’s just as catchy as any other rap/R&B collabo The-Dream has appeared on this year.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to take Snoop and his newfound playfulness on the mic too seriously—and it quickly takes a toll on this fairy tale. On “Pronto,” he partners with Soulja Boy Tell ’Em and lazily raps, “I do you ’til you get enough, I’ll leave you dead and red and stuff/What it do? What it is? I see you haven’t read enough.” Likewise, “Luv Drunk” finds Snoop again collaborating with The-Dream—less successfully this time—and singing a slew of ridiculous lines like, “Drink ’til you’re drunk, girl, my love is a fifth/Yeah, this for you, boo, it’s a gift.” It’d be a bit much coming from anyone, let alone a rapper pushing 40.

Still, there are enough grownup moments to keep Malice moving along. “Secrets,” featuring Kokane, packs a serving of West Coast flair to hold diehard Snoop fans over, while the brief but punchy “Two Minute Warning” features Snoop proving that he can still rock the microphone. And on “Special,” featuring Brandy and Pharrell, Snoop rehashes the same radio-friendly formula he and The Neptunes used on the 2003 hit, “Beautiful,” to deliver a happy ending to Malice N Wonderland. —Chris Yuscavage

Well, at least the artwork is dope.

    • Hard Truth

actually the art work looks like shit from here. i dont get how all of you are praising this cover. I wont get into details because i guess its subjective, but to put it simply the whole cover just looks messy with no cohesiveness. its like the artist asked snoop whats on his mind right now and snoop was like….”uh…bitches, liquer, gambling, snortin an 8 ball, and uh…money. oh yea and the concepts malice and wonderland…get it?”..yea snoop we got it.

  • Jon Dog

The album really does suck, but how can any album that features Soulja Boy even be taken seriously.. The art work is dope though, gott aggree with that.

    • Jerrell

How can you hate on Souja Boy? He had a hit song at 16. He producing records and had a few more hits. Stop the hate. If Snoop wants to gain a larger audience by putting SB on his album let him.

    • sam

have u even got the cd give it some time its real catchy gangsta pop i realy enjoy this cd to listnen to in the background it amps u up

  • venemez

Feat soulja boy?… I was going to support my fellow west coast rapper but now… I will have to pass

  • General

The problem for Snoop is when he goes away from the street shit that got him on and tries to do radio friendly shit, he just comes off sounding corny. He doesn’t have the lyrical chops to do much thats not 3rd grade level basic…

When I saw the tracklisting and saw the production line-up and collabos on this CD I knew it was gonna be a flop…

    Maybe next time

  • ee bubble

I have this disc and i like it alot , especially when im getting ready to go out, these beats bump, the joint wtih lil jon is dope, 2 minute warning is dope, i wanna rock, the other song with dream is gon be a club banger

the clipse album is dope too i cannot wait to see the review on this
    gucci got a xl, LOL

  • Lewbear

fuk me from this album i didnt expect loads but to be fair it is a poor show from the d.o.g.g there is not many if 1 part of really catchy lyrics in this album, and i cannot expect this when soulja boy is on the album. i would of likeed to of heard more nipsey hussle of some of the songs. and why isnt dre producing any of the songs even when dres beats and snoops flow make bangin tunes have they had a fall out, although i have heard that snoop has done a bit of work on detox so hopefully itsaal gooood.

  • John Cochran

The ” I Wanna Rock” mixtape he dropped a few weeks ago is fire. He put all the street shit on that. If anybody’s disappionted with the album, they should check that tape out. It should’ve been the album.

  • heartlandg

Gimme snoop written traccs and dre beats and I’m coppin!, Get off dat bs Snoop, give us what we want-One Locc to anotha

  • austin

i dont know why everyones hatin on this album. more than half of these songs are hot fire. and the other ones are still better than half the rap game today. who cares if snoop changed his style that real hardcore gangsta shit aint workin no more, it did 5 years ago. look fifs new album was just as good as get rich or die tryin , which was considered one of the best albums of all time and that was real gangsta shit. but because of the lack of love for gangsta music these days 50 only sold 150k copies in the first week. so snoop needs to change to sell and it still sounds good

  • Jesus Martinez

Damn, I thought this would be a great album when I first heard about it a while ago. Tha blue carpet treatment and Ego Trippin’ were his best back-to-back albums but this sounds like it might be more pop and watered down like R&G.

  • Nate

Snoop officially started his slow shift with R&G towards adding a couple woman friendly, plus club and young people (new audience) friendly stuff since then.. He still keeps some harder stuff on there, especially if you break down lyrics on his last two albums be he DISGUISES it behind the expertly crafted for radio tunes carefully picked. But like 50 and other legit big names snoop has more than enough hardcore material on his various mixtapes, group albums, and collabos. It’s out there it’s just that not enough fans have supported the other stuff so he’s trying with this one to support that niche that pays so well.

What is interesting is to see if this gets him more sales and back on top saleswise vs 50′s numbers. 50 was mostly all aggressive content on this album minus Baby by me single (which has 5mill youtube views almost already), but with a album that is 2/3rd good and aggressive content it is questionable that 50 will go gold. So why not Snoop keep it More R&G than Blue Carpet/Ego Trippin? He did alright with those two but he saw the negative sales trends since 2004 so he’s betting as long as he goes gold with this tenth album that he can keep this formula and always put out hardcore material on the side.

I agree though, it’s cool to makeup with Crooked (and he should had Guess Who’s Back on this album) but he should never had put Soulja Bitch on there… that’s uncalled for even if he is doing his thing. The West coast prides itself on good music more than just dances….

  • Money Mitch

What happened to the snoop dogg that was featured on Nas’ “playa play on” He murked that shit!!

    • jtm

that had to be one of the worst nas songs i have ever heard.

Hey Snoop, get back to doing what got you to the level you are at. DROP THAT GANSTA SHIIT!!!

  • http://www.justice.gov.za GO-Getta’

Like i said b4 i had lost all the respect i had 4 Snoop since he started using Ghostwriters.

C’mon how can i listen 2 a dude when i damn know well the things he ryhiming ’bout r sum1′s expriences & not his kinda like Rick Ross 2 me.
I can tolerate ghostwriters in RnB & any other genre but not hip-hop,ya dig?

He has lost the hunger & that’s 1 of the reason the WC Hip-Hiop Resurrection is going 2 take another decade 2 take off.

    PS:Artwork is dope tho

  • g-money

Snoop is still the homie. He just wanted to show how versatile he was, and the track with souljah boy isn’t for gangster fans anyways. I dig the album because I can take it to family get togethers, and have to bothered with parents trying to raise their kids right. Kokane and nipsey hussel did their thang. So stop all the low class criticisms, and until snoop drops a gangster album with Dre, lets bang out on this little league gangster shit. Its for the kids, man. I give two thumb’s up. “Pronto,” I give it one thumb up, nice work souljah boy.

  • CORLEON

  • Hanch

You really need to go back and listen to what snoop said. He never said he used Ghost Writers you clown. He said he is ok with ghost writers

  • Wallman

Didn’t he diss soulja boy or “Soulja man” as he called him about a year ago? why put him on the album? that’s really the worst track on the album. I’m confused.

  • romil

The mixtape is actually way better than the album I think Snoop started thinking about progression and making songs that would appeal a bigger audience like Jay Z does, but Snoop should stick to his roots, street g funk.. Check out the mixtape I guarantee its the best thing he put out since Doggystyle

  • kedordu

The rating on this was pretty on par, however, I still loved this cd and am not usually a big fan of Snoop. It’s definitely worth the 9.99, go cawp it.

  • EL B

Just got done listening to this album again. It was really slept on. This album is really dope. Not only was Snoop’s flow and lyrics on point, but it was a very well put together album. Snoop is one of the best at that. You can put in a Snoop album, press play and let it ride.
