50 Cent Resurrects Third Eye Rap?

While cruising around in his bulletproof, bomb proof ride with XXL Digital Content Director, Mr. Carl Chery, G-Unit General 50 Cent played some new material from his free digital release War Angel.

During the interview/listening party a line off one of Fif’s song immediately caught my ear. “See clear through my third eye/ there’s gonna be a murda.”

He didn’t just say what I think he did, did he? I haven’t heard a rapper use those two words in… I don’t even know how long.

You see back in the ’90s you couldn’t pick up a piece of vinyl without MC Rappity Rap talking about their third eye. Remember Hiero’s 3rd Eye Vision. And here comes 50 resurrecting it from the ’90s rap term graveyard. I’m shocked, but I doubt I’m as shocked as these guys.

Back in the day if you were on that third eye ish, you weren’t talking bout busting nobody upside the head. But then again that whole underground/mainstream divide doesn’t exist in hip-hop anymore. It’s just a matter of time before we hear Common spitting some “aggressive content.” Nah I’m buggin.

But really though, I know you guys are definitely up on your poop stained rhymes, but what do you know about them third eye raps? Hit me. -Jesse Gissen

Listen to Commons “The Bitch In You”. Content doesnt get more aggressive than that. Erykah Badoodoo killed that part of Common.

I guess it just shows how much you paid attention to Hip Hop in the past year or at least certain artist. LL ft. Grandmaster Caz on the track ‘Ringtone Murder’ had it in the 1st verse. Guess it took a fake G for it to get your attention.

Since when doez Fiddy spit “3rd eye raps”? Plus his next bar on some murder shyt, smh. 3rd Eye iz about KnowLedge, bruh, pbp. If duke has switched up his styLe to dropping tru KnowLedge in his “raps” then i can dig it, otherwise a mention of his “3rd eye” means caca, nothing, mydude. Big ups to Pimp, R.I.P. man I miss his music…but you must have’nt done your research on the Third eye. If so you’d know thats not its sole meaning. It can be put into a violent context because to some even the notion of a third eye is evil and violence pretty much equals evil or negativity.

    • OG Matt Herbz

It took me a minute to remember it, but I knew it was a Gang Starr line. But the line after that: “Too potent. Too high in intelligence quotient…” was my shit. I quote that line to myself often on some get-hyped shit.

i hate all the sub categories and titles now given to hip hop. Its good because of all the diversity at the same time its destorying the freedom. The Third eye and reffering to the third eye mos def needs to be done a lot more today. With all the great music of the 90′s wtf happen from like 98 to 02. Was that the y2k? Or YT?
