I See You Jockin’ Jay-Z…

Nah’Right is still killing the internets even though it’s several years old already. My favorite shit is Nah’Right Lite. You might be surprised at some of the articles that get posted there.

There are some real good Hip-Hop related business articles get filtered through those links. Read this joint from the Wall Street Journal about Michael Rapino, the CEO of the entertainment promotion company Live Nation…

Rock’s New Republic

My favorite quote is from Madonna’s manager, “People used to tour to promote albums, now they put out albums to promote tours.”

The sick shit is that on the low Live Nation is pwned by Clear Channel so don’t get surprised when Jay-Z’s latest album is spinning on their radio station 4x an hour. They are gonna figure some kind of way to recoup that initial outlay of money that they are giving to artists and performers. This advance is the kind of check that will allow you to sprinkle actual diamonds on your Lucky Charms. If I were an unsigned rapper my dream would be to get a Live Nation deal.

Although Live Nation is only fucking with you if your shit is stadium status.

Listen to this old Jay-Z verse with a Fela Kuti beat as the backing track. This shit is gonna cause stampedes in Nigeria when it comes through the speakers. Thx to 2d0peb0yz.

Jay-Z x Fela Kuti – ‘Sweet’

The only other dude in rap Live Nation may consider fucksing with is KanYe West. I think that will be the tour package for 2009. KanYe, Wayne, Jeezy and some chick or girl group sandwiched in there. Brought to you by Live Nation.

Pretty soon one company will own all the record labels, radio stations and liquor companies.

And Jay-Z will be their president.

    What up Billy…

Yeah, Clear Channel is in a race to take over the world against Disney and a few other mega-corporations. Just imagine how this would all be playing out if there was no Internet/”free” music downloading…

    What up?

Let’s see who get caught slipping first, Universal, Disney or Clear Channel. I think Universal gets eaten first.

    Big fish eat little fish.

    • Pierzy

I agree, especially since Jay claims he took the “Roc Nation” idea to Universal and they weren’t really interested so he moved on to Live Nation. If that decision turns out to be correct, it’s a big loss for Universal…

Sho nuff, the days of dropping a CD, then waiting for the money to roll in are up. Being on the road 300 days of the year has its disadvantages if you aren’t the go-getter type. And I’m sure that Soulja Boy ain’t getting no damn Live Nation deal anytime soon. I mean, you gots to have a portfolio to work with if you’re going to do concerts and shows and shit. You can’t just perform six different remixes each of “Soulja Girl” and “Crank That” and expect niggaz to part with the upwards of $60 dollars. Fuck naw.

We’ll see if Live Nation can make it work or if they will become another company “too big to fail.” Either way that old music business model is dead. Good riddance.

That Jay on Fela Kuti joint is bananas, waaaay better than the version on AG.

  • geico lizard

I think Jay z is just the face upfront i dont think he makes that much money. Just like tony romo is the face of the cowboys and he is a millionaire but Jerry Jones really runs shit and he is a billionaire. Magic Johnson is the same way he has a big company behind him I think its sony or viacom and they make the money he just goes outfront to make people think the stuff is black owned. Thats why magic was grinning and throwing fundraisers for hillary clinton over barack obama because his company had cut a deal with the clintons.

Haha, the future may be grim indeed. And they won’t sign Wanye, how you gonna sign a nigga that might not even show up (or show up drunk/high just to play guitar) when your whole rep is good live shows? Good post.

Live Nation in no longer owned by Clear Channel and is a stand-alone entity. Clear Channel is taking a major beating with the dramatic reduction of ad revenue coming in to its radio stations and Live Nation stock has dropped 60% in the last 30 days. Live Nation recently cut their ties with Ticketmaster so they can start selling tickets directly to the customer while Ticketmaster acquired Front Line Management which manages most of the big touring acts. Ticketmaster vs Live Nation is the real battle for 2009, the major labels are side show toy booths. Hip Hop take a break from the rumor nonsense and step your business game up

  • chitchat

Goddamn @ AZ. Is ticketmaster publicly traded? Cuz if so, my money is with them. I really don’t see how Live Nation stands to overtake them unless they take all of Front Line’s acts.

Also @ Billy, Vivendi Universal is not about to get ate up by no Clear Channel. LOL

  • http://xxlmag.com Billy X. Sunday

Peep out the fact that General Electric and Vivendi have the television broadcasting arm and not the music industry sector.

If they get caught slipping Universal Records can get got is all I’m saying.
