Respect Busta Rhymes

I mean some can’t stay afloat/A million Busta albums he still not mentioned with the G.O.A.Ts” – Joe Budden “Who Pt.1”

To me the best rap lines are made up of things that everyone is thinking and no one is saying. Props to Joey for pointing out hip-hop’s constant overlooking of Busta Rhymes. After hearing an early version of Blessed I found myself thinking, “How come Bus name never gets mentioned amongst the hip-hop greats?” As a culture it seems that we have such limited attention spans that we never see the bigger picture.

As far as rhymes go, dude is really a beast on the mic and has been since “Scenario.” He has a ton of hit records; classic features and verses where he just blacked out on some real MC shit. Imagine hip-hop without “Woo-Hah” and “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See.” Then try to picture the ” Flava in Ya Ear” remix without the Dungeon Dragon. Remember him on Redman’s “Da Goodness” or the Artifacts “Come on with the Git down” remix? Dude had a Dilla beat on just about every album and then turns around and does songs with Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey. Never has an MC been able to go pop and still maintain underground credibility (well maybe Nas for better or worse). As far as live shows go, Trevor has one of hip-hop’s best and let’s not even talk about his videos because hands down he has the greatest collection of rap clips EVER!

And now we have these rumors of Bus getting dropped by Interscope. Whether its true or not, what the fuck does it matter? How the fuck can a record label drop Busta Rhymes, are you kidding me? And before anyone tries to bring up sales, The Big Bang sold over 600,000 copies (I don’t give a fuck, in 2006 that shit was an accomplishment). Maybe Busta should drop Jimmy Iovine because I don’t care if Blessed is released on Homeboy Records, the version of the album that I heard was pretty fuckin’ DOPE! Busta is truly one of the greats and it’s about time hip-hop recognized and stood up for our heroes before they’re gone!–Rob the Music Ed

Name 1 verse that Trevor has spit that has affected your life in any way, shape, or form…

Busta Rhymes is the ultimate bubble gum, fast food, verse spitter. He’s better than most at it but I mean damn the man has little to no substance for his entire career.

He will NEVER be considered with the GOAT’s.

    MESSAGE!!!

    LOL…

  • http://www.msn.com west philly’s finest

The only reason I can think of is that when he was at his best he was a fucking cartoon character. Everybody loves Woo-Ha but its considered up there with “Heaven or Hell” or “Cant Knock The Hustle” or even “Get Money”.

    • Rob The Music Ed

“Heaven or Hell” is one of my favorite Raekwon songs. I remember buying the Fresh soundtrack when it dropped JUST FOR THAT SONG!

But there is no way you can compare that to “Woo-Hah,” the Busta song was and still is WAY BIGGER!

      • http://www.msn.com west philly’s finest

I meant to say that Woo-Hah not considered up there with the other classics at the time. I just didn’t feel like changing it. Heaven or Hell was my shit though.

    • http://www.msn.com west philly’s finest

I meant to say that u can’t compare Woo-Hah his best song with the other classics at the time i just didn’t feeling like changing it.

  • The Truth

I agree one- hundred percent. I’ve been a busta fan since the beginning and have told people many a time how he doesn’t really get credit for the crazy material hes put out. And to me when it comes to features, Busta can and has kilt 99% of the tracks hes been on. If he made a album of tracks he was featured on, it would be one of the best EVER! Guy can rip any and every beat with any artist.

  • http://www.xxlmag.com Benicio Del Thoro

    Co-Sign!!

I enjoyed E.L.E. Myself, even though everyone would agree its his wackest album. Maybe. None the less, this man needs a hip-hop honors tribute. With someone who can get his lyrics right, no lupe. Shout out to Mr. Ridenhour.

  • http://blockishot.com/blog kirk

Cosign. Busta is definitely a hiphop great he was one of those that I think Biggie saw as an equal anyone who did that should be considered a great(Jay, Nas, Raekwon, and Ghost, and Method Man) and anyone on par with those careers should be considered a great unless you make strictly commercial music like per se a cash money record label where you’ve had hits because all you’ve done is make feel good materialistic music aout your house cars and bling for you entire career and the eventual dope deal every now and then. Busta is definitely a great. and ANDRE 3000 IS THE SECOND BEST RAPPER ALIVE NEXT TO JAY. Peace.

    • MOE

NOPE…NAS IS BETTER THAN GAY-Z AND ANDRE 3000. GAY-Z GOT HIT WITH THE ONE PUNCH KO WITH EITHER AND IT WAS A WRAP I DONT CARE IF HE SIGNED NAS OR ANY OTHER BULLSHIT..IT WAS A WRAP. ANDRE IS TIGHT BUT HE NEEDS TO PUT OUT MORE SOLO MATERIAL BEFORE HE CAN BE CONSIDERED ANYTHING. OUTKAST AS A GROUP THOUGH IS CLASSIC.

      • SouthCakC23

slap ya self. You have clearly written the dumbest statement ever posted on this forum.

“andre is tight but he nees to put out more solo material before he can be considered anything.”

Wow, the ignorance in this statement. It’s a shame that you can be the G.O.A.T. and only have one solo album to your name huh? NAS is no where near Dre. Quit smoking that shit you smokin homie. Jay-z is a good wordssmith, but as an overall ARTIST, DRE >>>>>>>>> Jay-Z and any other rapper dead or alive.

  • Gooch

people don’t respect him because he’s overexposed and boring…. seems like the kind of guy who will do anything for a check… including some corny ass diet Pepsi commercial

I would love to see what kind of cd’s you’ve got in your collection(probably all bootlegs and bullshit).

  • John Brown

    Hmm…lets see

    Pac > Busta
    Biggie > Busta
    Jigga > Busta
    Rakim > Busta
    Big Pun > Busta
    Eminem > Busta
    Nas > Busta
    Andre 3000 > Busta
    Redman > Busta
    Ghostface > Busta
    Common > Busta

Yeah I can’t figure out why people dont think about Busta as one of the greats..

    • Rob The Music Ed

correction. If we take some of the things that makes up an MC into consideration like, lyrics, flow, cadence, presence, creativity and the ability to make a hit record (these are just a few things that make up an MC).

      Redman < Busta
      Ghostface < Busta
      Common < Busta

But its not even about that. Dude is just great in his own right, just as all of the MCs that you listed.

      • John Brown

        Rob,

I honestly dont think Busta is one of the greatest but I respect your opinion. On the other hand I think that the fact that he is from NY hurts him. I mean Busta is like how EWING was in the 90′s he was a good player but everyone else was great (MJ, The Dream). Busta is behind lets see (NOT THE ORDER) Biggie, Jigga, Nas, Raekwon, Redman, Method Man, KRS-ONE, Ghostface Killa, ODB (R.I.P) and many more. Now I also believe that if he would had been from the West or the South he would be consider as one of the greats. But then again if Busta was from the West or South he wouldnt be Busta.

  • http://robertoflackchronicles.com RL

Busta has been one of the most consistent artists to date. Most of us have seen him evolve as a member of LONS to branching out and creating his own lane with crazy off the wall videos to countless hits thereafter. Like Rob said also, he catered to both sides of the spectrum by working with the legendary J Dilla to being on Khaled’s Im so Hood remix (which he fuckin bodied).

At the end of the day it’s all preference, but you can never deny his mark in the game. He is one of the greats.

    • John Brown

LUDACRIS verse on the IM SO HOOD REMIX > BUSTA verse on the IM SO HOOD REMIX

      • 239allday

Calm down, Busta definitely had that one, and after him was Big Boi’s verse, then luda, Rest were wack.

        • John Brown

239allday, listen to the song again. Luda had the best verse on that remix.

  • Casey

    The Coming > Reasonable Doubt
    The Coming > Capitol Punishment
    The Coming > MMLP
    The Coming > Resurrection
The Coming > All Eyez on Me

That’s why Busta’s a great…he’s not as good a lyricist, but he has charisma, flow, makes good albums, and it’s not like he’s a lyrical slouch.

  • fireforreal

Fuck what ya’ll say E.L.E was fire and his wackest joint was anarchy or it ain’t safe no more.

  • Xcluziv13

Bus is the truth and he go hard on everything he do. He’s a big inspiration because out of all the ssshh.. he been goin’ thru he still here and still doin’ it better than anyone else. Much love goes out to Busta!
    Keep Killin’Em!!!

  • SW PHILLY

on the real you gotta respect his grind for all these years and all of his albums(if not most of em’) sold well. He ain’t a Nas, Jay-Z, or any other rapper u can name he stays in his lane and puts out solid albums. By the way imo,”The Big Bang” would have sold at least in my estimation 1.2 mil. had he dropped it while he had everybodys ears. Nigga had 3 hot singles with a bangin ass remix. U aint gotta like him but respect his hustle. Swayze-

  • Hambone Deluxo

can’t take him seriously after he started talking coke… we don’t believe you

  • http://incilin.blogspot.com Incilin

Yes, Busta does need to get his name into the GOAT conversations (Along with Red Man) but he prolly won’t since dude is pretty wack right now (the Big Bang had the illest beats but the wackest verses). Plus Busta isn’t a straight up lyricist (Most rappers who end up in GOAT conversations usually have some sort of lyrical stride in them) unlike most of his 90s counterparts. He’s mostly known for his crazy off the wall flow and energy and such.

  • ronnie

this is a no brainer. heck yeah, busta is up there wi the best of them. this is the same man that brought the coming and the dungeon dragon to the world

  • Oneofthemyo’s

Yow busta has no lyrics? Man why the fuck didnt somebody tell me? Here I am still bumping GENESIS and shit I’ma about to destroy busta whole discography cause I aint know!

  • AZ40

Easy niggas don’t respect his content, you know the whole what he says thing…anyway the nigga has one of the best flows of all time, but I know some people can’t get past his voice and the way he’s so animated…I like it, it’s something creative and different

  • Trenton

only album i bought was the COMING, Classic
41/2 mic album.. But after the coming, busta fell the fuck off. He had a couple of dope tracks here and there, but not enouth to cop an album!!!!!!

  • bless

Rob I was feelin u till that Ghost<Busta crackheadedness. Cant co-sign that bullshit.

  • Tony TwIsT

this article says what i have been saying for years. I think that lyrically, is where he is the most slept on. Now he doesn’t have the type of lyrics that make u think, like nas but if yall consider weezy a lyricist than u gotta consider bust to be a lyricist. He has alotta hot lines and as far as the flow goes c’mon busta started that whole rap a whole verse with the same rhyme scheme shit.

  • g george

Busta is a great MC. I will give him maybe top 10 but top 5 NO. I think the difference between busta is that he has some classic songs, but i really dont see any classic albums.

  • mdot12

i definitely agree with this. busta is one of the best. always been a fan. i listen to woo-hah on my ipod all the time. he does make good videos too. the ‘don’t touch me’ video is classic busta rhymes. i really hope interscope wouldn’t be stupid enough to drop busta. but even if they did, he could get signed by another major label right now. man, he could sign to koch records and it wouldn’t matter. he’d just be the biggest artist ever to sign to koch records. well no matter where he ends up, i’m definitely still gonna buy his music.

  • avenger XL

Though I think this is more dick riding and I wonder if Bus paid for this.

I will give a quick list to break down bros pros and cons in my mind and I may miss a few.

    Pros:

    1. Bus has crazy cadence style and delivery. Dude is definitely a great emcee.
    2. Bus knows how to move a crowd he is an emcees emcee and his videos are incredible.
    3. Bus is excepted in the club, the hood and the cipher.

    Cons:

    1. Bus sytle can be a little hard to handle at times. All of the screaming is great for the club but after a while you just don’t want that when you zoning out. And his softer songs are often R&B laced pop garble.
I know he is a legend in the back pack set because of the Scenario remix and his work with the artifacts but damn.
    2. Though Bus came from more underground roots once he got big he was ultra glossy and he got a whole new kind of fan. Many of the fans were not true hiphop heads they were pop music fans and Busta became a great hip-hop pop emcee he represented everything well but he had to water down his joints because he is cooking for everyone and not just us.
    3. Busta has never created what could be consider a genre defining classic. He has had solid records with great club hits. His records are geared toward lead singles rather than being a cohesive body of work. Which hurts him as a artist in my opinion.
    4. Bus is one of those guys that rides industry waves. He went from being the loud lyrical fun dude(like a east coast luda). To playing up a thug like image and even joining the roid crowd. I am all about chasing a dollar be act like what you are. If this new character is the real busta I am disappionted.

I just mentioned Luda, I think Busta and luda will end up in the same boat over looked because though they are lyrical they never really wowed the world with a classic they just gave us fixes with hits here and there.

    peace

  • TheRefriedMexican

BUSTA WAS A NICE M.C. WITH A FEW CLASSIC SINGLES. BUT ONE OF THE GREATEST? WAS HE TREND SETTING? NO! WAS HE LYRICALLY GIFTED? NOT REALLY! DID HE EVER RELEASE A CLASSIC OR EVEN TOP TO BOTTOM SOLID ALBUM? HELL NO! ANY RAPPER KNOWN MORE FOR HIS WARDROBE THAN MIC SKILLS IS NOT ONE OF THE GREATEST. GOOD? YEAH, GREAT? NO!

listen…busta is defiately 1 of da best…just not da very best…but it all depends on da type of hip hop u in2…not 2 many artist can b pop and still giv u thought provokin songs…yall payin 2 much attn 2 his radio friendly hits and not album cuts made just 4 u 2 think about…this is a dude who was talkin bout only 4 years left in ’96 cuz once 2000 came shit was gon change and dats exactly wut we seein 2day…we in a fuckin recession which could lead 2 a depression if shit dnt shape up…well busta was rhymin bout dat 10 years ago…yeah nas, jay, biggie, pac, and pun u could say was better but dnt act like busta wouldnt hold it down wen he was on songs wit them same niggaz…and he dun rhymed on just about any type of beat and ripped it…he can rep wit niggaz like luda and red, and still spit on a track wit twista and bone thug and fit rite in…gotta giv him his just due….PERIOD

  • Cam Jones

Busta is criminally underrated. Solid albums and one of the best live shows I ever saw period (well with the exception of pants dropping. *Pause no Baby taking screwing his artists to a whole level kissing Wayne in public like he was his chick).

For the record I got the Big Bang and it was one of my favorites for that year. Honestly he is borderline top 10 for me, maybe even top 15. I’m just afraid in a few years we will be having the same conversation about Luda.

Yeah its time for someone to start a new top 5 MC’s or even 10
even Redman deserves a shot at top 10. the biggie jay-z and nas is so old. its time for a new one.
Busta is Hip Hop he goes in at a show. He’s Lyrical and creative.

  • Vicious Seiger

Busta, one of the best who ever did it? Are you for real? Yeah, you are and I can’t deny I have all of his albums except the very first [I never got around to purchasing it] and he is without a shadow of a doubt one of hip hop’s premier talents and deserving of being talked about as one of the greatest. To tell the truth he motivates me to buy some albums because he rarely [if ever] dissappoints on his guest appearances. It’s about time someone said this. Busta Rhymes is definitly one of the GOATs,the Kings of New York and one of our most significant ambassadors of hip hop. Now how about some love for Common and Scarface?

    • Rob The Music Ed

They aint ready for the Scarface post homie. Face is in my top 5 of all-time!

  • BIGNAT

man i own every album he put out and when he doing a freestyle. he goes in and drops some crazy unfoucsed unwritten mass of greatness.

  • mike

I fucks with Busta. I feel he definitely could have been a dude that spit more substance lyrically. He could definitely spit, but he caught his niche with the comedy joints, which like two of his singles was so big that it wasn’t even funny. So he kind’ve ran with that, and it made him big. Real big. I don’t know, it just seems like he started riding that bigness a little bit too much, like if he was feeling himself alittle too much. He started pushing Flip Mode, and he just started leaning back, like Flip Mode was that hot. With the exception of Rah Digger, they were wack. But during this time Busta Bust rhymes started getting wack, he started talking about ass, and how he be laying it down, and all this other corny shit. He left the comedy shit, and went into that. People lost interest. Flip Mode kind’ve fell apart. But to me, why i stopped fucking with Busta Bust is because this niggah started fucking with Gay-unit. To me, that was the weakest, and wackest shit he could have done. It showed that he no longer had confidence in what he was selling, so he went to another connect, and lost. He went to that side like that was the answer for his career, fuck with curtis and his transvestites, and I will become hot again. During this whole time the hottest shit he spit was what he spit on the diss record towards Jah rule. The one with curtis and Eminem, off the Tupac beat. Cause from the moment he did that move, listening to Chris Lighty, and fucking with gay-unit, Busta Bust career just went downhill. And now, when you think about Busta, there is not too much recent shit that he has put out, that is really notable. He caught the same fever that Mobb deep, and MOP caught, and you see how shit went down. Jim Jones, remy, and the lil niggah from D-block caught that same sickness, and you see the end results. Even Jim Jones looking sick right now, and he got all this money. Fucking with bitch ass niggahs is what fucked Busta Bust up, i would have respected him more if he stayed independent of all that bullshit gay-unit , and interscope was bringing to that rap game. he just may be in the same boat as Janet Jackson right now.

Busta is one of the Greatest..No discussion

  • ThingAlec

I pretty much think that Busta’s first 4 albums were all classics namely When Disaster Strikes and Anarchy. His next 3 albums were good but not up to par with his last 4. But Back On My B.S. was pretty wack. I hope Busta comes back hard on the next go round.
