The 25 Most Hip-Hop Cities In America

Every year this privately funded Washington D.C. think tank publishes the information on the safest and most dangerous cities in America. They generate their rankings by considering all the reported information submitted to the FBI’s database on crime and violence for cities with a minimum population.

They consider all types of crimes from homicides, rapes, burglaries, assaults, grand theft and other arrests then weigh these crimes depending on their seriousness. So while Philadelphia may outpace all American cities for their overall murder rate they were outranked by Camden, New Jersey, their neighbor across the Delaware river for the simple fact that there are far more people in Philly overall. Crime per capita is the operative term here. Camden is a depressed little one-horse burg now that all the manufacturing jobs have been shipped overseas. But at the same time Camden is so hardbody that you can get juxed by a senior citizen.

In this years’ rankings of the most dangerous cities Detroit, Michigan has risen to the top, or is it the bottom? Word to Proof, the ‘D’ is fuckin’ hardbody deluxe. I made a trip to the ‘D’ a few years ago and I saw some shit I will never forget. In the middle of the night there are Black dudes walking all around the downtown area like zombies. They will try to pump your gas at the QuikChek or they will just beg you for change. Young dudes too. They need to form a homeless persons union out in that bitch and prevent these young dudes from joining until they have at least reached forty years old or been a military veteran.

If you’ve been watching C-Span with any regularity, and why would you, Hip-Hop has become congressional code for young Black males. Lawmakers have spent an inordinate amount of time discussing Barry Bonds’ ballsachs[ll] and the destructive impact of Hip-Hop music. I suppose that lying presidents, price gouging oil companies and the erosion of the Constitution are subjects that these congressional cowards are too shook to face up to. So now that Hip-Hop has been equated with criminality in the mainstream media, and let’s face it, per capita, which form of entertainment has more artists under indictment? Can we not also say that the most crime ridden cities are also conversely the most Hip-Hop? I think so. Let’s take a look at the top 25 most Hip-Hop cities…

1. Detroit, Michigan
2. St. Louis, Missouri
3. Flint, Michigan
4. Oakland, California
5. Camden, New Jersey
6. Birmingham, Alabama
7. North Charleston, South Carolina
8. Memphis, Tennessee
9. Richmond, California
10. Cleveland, Ohio
11. Orlando, Florida
12. Baltimore, Maryland
13. Little Rock, Arkansas
14. Compton, California
15. Youngstown, Ohio
16. Cincinnati, Ohio
17. Gary, Indiana
18. Kansas City, Missouri
19. Dayton, Ohio
20. Newark, New Jersey
21. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
22. Atlanta, Georgia
23. Jackson, Mississippi
24. Buffalo, New York
25. Kansas City, Kansas

Just looking at the top 10 the south could be considered the most Hip-Hop region in America if we consider Missouri to be part of the south bracket. The Midwest nearly keeps pace with three cities in the top 10. California holds the west coast down with two cities and the east only places one town in the top 10 list of most Hip-Hop cities. Ha! New York rap is dead because not enough people in New York are dying. Go figure.

When I consider the top 25 most Hip-Hop cities I have to concede that south wins by virtue of the fact that more people in southern cities stay losing. That’s what I love most about Hip-Hop. It exists in a perpetual state of Bizarro-like inverted values. Poverty is positivity. Snitching? Not so much. Where else do losers get to be winners? Not bad meaning bad, but bad meaning good.

Shouts go out to Ohio for being America’s most hardbody Hip-Hop state. Youngstown, stand the fuck up! It makes sense to me now that Ohio would be the most Hip-Hop state. I think about all the bands that have created music which is prime sample source material. The Ohio Players, Slave, Zapp, and of course Bone Thugs. Lil’ Bow Wow needs to start repping Columbus if he wants to get his street cred back.

As an added informational treat I thought I should include America’s least Hip-Hop cities (those ranked as safest) just in case any of you RapSpace rappers thought of repping your hometown…

1. Mission Viejo, California
2. Clarkstown, New York
3. Brick Township, New Jersey
4. Amherst, New York
5. Sugar Land, Texas
6. Colonie, New York
7. Thousand Oaks, California
8. Newton, Massachusetts
9. Toms River Township, N.J.
10. Lake Forest, California

WTF?!? Three cities from New York state in the top 10 for America’s safest cities? No wonder east coast rap has sucked so bad lately.

“In this years’ rankings of the most dangerous cities Detroit, Michigan has risen to the top, or is it the bottom? Word to Proof, the ‘D’ is fuckin’ hardbody deluxe.”

Detroit is probably the “gulliest” city overall in this country when you look at the statistics for like the last 20 years.

“They consider all types of crimes from homicides, rapes, burglaries, assaults, grand theft and other arrests then weigh these crimes depending on their seriousness. So while Philadelphia may outpace all American cities for their overall murder rate they were outranked by Camden, New Jersey, their neighbor across the Delaware river for the simple fact that there are far more people in Philly overall. Crime per capita is the operative term here.”

The “murder crisis” here in Baltimore was a hot issue a couple of months ago during the mayoral campaign (as if Baltimore hasn’t occupied at least one of the top 5 positions in homicide rankings for like the last 15 years–it’s probably 2nd only to Detroit during that same stretch of time). They kept saying that Baltimore had the 2nd highest murder rate in the country, so our neighbors 1 and 1/2 hours to the north have been even worse than we have this year, huh? That shit is unusual, in the past I’ve been relieved every time I’ve been to Philly, because the people there were much more civil and a lot less ignant. One positive thing that I can say about Baltimore is that our rape rate is really low, even compared to much safer cities.

“If you’ve been watching C-Span with any regularity, and why would you, Hip-Hop has become congressional code for young Black males. Lawmakers have spent an inordinate amount of time discussing Barry Bonds’ ballsachs[ll] and the destructive impact of Hip-Hop music. I suppose that lying presidents, price gouging oil companies and the erosion of the Constitution are subjects that these congressional cowards are too shook to face up to.”

That’s real shit right there. Not that I don’t think that some of the criticisms of Rap are unwarranted, but I really don’t see why all of these supposedly great minds are holding hearings on the content of Rap music. I think the only reason they’re *really* concerned is because it’s influencing so many of *their* kids (and damn them for giving ardent airhead and strong competitor for “shittiest rapper alive” David Banner a soap box to climb up on).

  • MI

shout outs to OH for the most hard-body state???…..look at Michigan…2 cities in the TOP 3! when the economy is crazy bad like it is in MI …u know what happens… unfortunately

Or maybe it’s cause Ney York cats are getting smarter ? ever think of that retards, killing innocent people cause your bent off some clear juice and sniffing leaners and can’t handle yourself so you go out and bust rounds off at the first cat that you see, that’s what’s really played out.

You mean New York City is colder than:

    1. Detroit, Michigan
    3. Flint, Michigan
    10. Cleveland, Ohio
    15. Youngstown, Ohio
    16. Cincinnati, Ohio
    17. Gary, Indiana
    19. Dayton, Ohio
    20. Newark, New Jersey-right across the river
    24. Buffalo, New York

I remember reading that Illinois & Minnesota were not included in the study because their stats were not available.

I wonder if Chicago has too large a population to make the list anyways because it’s all based on “per capita.”

With everything you hear, you’d think N.O. would be on the list though. Who knows, with all the chaos there in the past 2 years, maybe the stats weren’t available either?

I’m not surprised at all about D.C. D.C. has been so heavily gentrified that poor people can hardly even afford to live in the city any more. You have Doctors and other high paid professionals now moving into parts of D.C. that used to be straight hood. The murder rate at least in D.C. has dropped significantly over the last 6 or 7 years. I’m sure that Katrina is the reason that New Orleans failed to make the list.

  • Aaron

Technically Missouri is part of the Midwest, which puts the Midwest over the top. Kansas City and St. Louis are counted as Midwestern cities.

  • H. Gat

Ohk, I’m from Newark, NJ and I love my city even with all of its flaws because it is home to me; it is what I know. But I am a little confused regarding people’s comments.

It seems that people on here are “happy and proud” that their city is ranked among the Top 25 Most Dangerous Cities in America. If so, I don’t understand the logic. I am not proud that my city made the list and that my nephews have to grow up in a city like this. Individuals really have their priorities out of order when they are proud of how dangerous their city is. I went to school in DC, and it was crazy to watch people from B-more (Murdaland) and DC argue over whose city was worse, or what city had the most bodies or was the toughest. Instead of being proud of how “hard-body” your city is, do something to stop the violence and make a better place for those coming after us that have to live in these cities.

Today, is a different world. Killing someone does not make you a gangster, instilling order and protection in your community does. People value how dangerous their city is as if it makes them tough or hardbody. I just don’t understand sometimes.

    Post Scriptum:
I believe New York City, which includes the five boroughs did not make the list because in some regards it is too large and diverse. New York City is the largest city in the United States including the boroughs (not the cities of) the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan (Harlem), and Staten Island, which are all apart of one city. Therefore, the safe-havens of Manhattan and other parts in some sense balance out the negative elements of certain hoods like Brooklyn, Harlem, and Queens-bridge.

    • Doobie

“I went to school in DC, and it was crazy to watch people from B-more (Murdaland) and DC argue over whose city was worse, or what city had the most bodies or was the toughest.”

That is so, so true H. Gat. I live in Baltimore (and went to school in Baltimore) and work in D.C., and people used to have those silly ass arguments all the time. It does seem to have subisded a bit, likely due at least in part to the mass gentrification in D.C.

Damn StL, still up there huh? I take these stats and rankings with a grain of salt, of course. Anyone familiar with the StL area knows about the unusual “County-City” split that StL has and the effect of having a purely urban area factored into the rankings can have on the stats. I think a more accurate method of ranking a dangerous city would be to tabulate the dispersion of crime in a city. For example, a majority of the crime in StL happens in North City.

  • http://www.xxlmag.com EReal

Oh and NO isnt on the list cause all the killers moved to Orlando after Katrina.

    Forreal tho!

    • Doobie

You must be right about that. I stayed in Orlando for a couple of months back in 2000 and it was *very* non hip-hop, I don’t know what the hell happen. Something tells me that the rape rate is largely what has it so high on the list. Almost every week I heard stories about girls getting raped while passed out at some party, but most of the rapes weren’t being done by people in the hip-hop crowd.

“That’s what I love most about Hip-Hop. It exists in a perpetual state of Bizarro-like inverted values. Poverty is positivity. Snitching? Not so much.”

I’ve been saying that for a while now. When I fell in love with hip-hop, it wasn’t that way at all, and I clearly remember the period of devolution that brought us to the place where we are today. Fuck these ass backwards values.

  • flipbeats

ok i see everybody talking about hard cities, and repin like it fuckin cool or lets say real hard body ,what i see the government (the devil ) doing their job , with unemployment , poverty, which brings survival instinct, which brings crime and self destruction . so with all the so called hiphop cities, i say the government doing a good job killing us off this planet. now that’s HARDBODY …ORGANIZE OR GET LEFT BEHIND SIX FEET UNDER. PEACE 360

But the wash dc company mentioned actually SELLS these reports for profit, so F them profiting off of the hood’s pain.

  • Jason Murk

It doesn’t surprise me that big cities like NYC and LA ain’t on the list since it goes by crime per capita.

For instance, There were about 600 murders in NY last year. That sounds like a ridiculously high number. But when you look at the fact that there are over 8 million people living in New York City, 600 murders ain’t shit. 600 divided by 8 million = about 7.5 murders for every 1000 people.

I live in Cincinnati. We had about 100 murders last year, far less than New York. But the population in Cincinnati is only about 250,000. 100 divided by 250,000 = about 40 murders for every 1000 people.

The rankings are misleading though, because if you separated all of New York’s boroughs… I’m sure a few of em would top the list. Same with other big cities like Los Angeles and Chicago.

While this list is interesting, I don’t think these rankings are “Hip Hop” at all… and if it is “Hip Hop,” then maybe hip hop needs to die.

  • INF

you niggas are dumb, those three new york cities are upstate and shit so of course they gon be safe..Fuck all these lists and shit..go to the Bronx, go to East New York, go to Shaolin, or go to Jamaica or the bridge and you’ll see aint shit change..Don’t act like you don’t know..Niggas feeln hard cause they city on a list now thats soft.

  • Doobie

New York hasn’t been *that* grimey since Giuliani got elected and killed that shit (not that I’m trying to give Giuliani props, fuck Giuliani). But that’s good for New York. That’s a large part of the reason that New York stays winning these days. Compare New York’s education system with any of the cities on this list and I bet that New York’s totally kicks their asses (70% of black males in Baltimore City never even graduate from high school, and unless you go to one of two city wide magnet schools, you really don’t learn shit anyway). And, their job market is just as kick ass, people graduate from schools in areas all over the country (what exactly can you do with a college degree in Kansas anyway) and move to New York for work. People need to grow up man, people in New York should be proud that their quality of life is so high. New York rap started to fall off when rap as a whole started to fall off: when people started supporting rappers because they were gully instead of supporting them for simply being good at what they do. That’s how you end up with garbage like The Diplomats.

    Jbo says:

MAN GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE ALL THOSE OHIO CITIES AND ORLANDO??MAN WHERE HOUSTON AT? LOS ANGELES NEW YORK OR CHICAGO THOSE ARE THE FOUR BIGGEST CITIES IN THE COUNTRY AND THE CRUNKEST TOO FUCK THIS LIST.

    ^^^^^^^
Genius, the list takes population into account.so the bigger cities arent gonna have as high a percent of murders even if they actually have MORE murders.

  • wow

are ya’ll serious? i’m from brooklyn, ny…now reside in pg county, md..and teach in dc…all of whom are not on the list…someone tell me why? niggas are murdered EVERYDAY HERE..where i’m at in brooklyn niggas always at it…if you wanna compare STATES with dc (a district, not a state) and NYC (an island) then go ahead…believe the statistics and think shit is sweet in either bk or dc…thats the easiest way for ya ass to be on a flyer with your ‘sunrise’ and ‘sunset’…

    • Doobie

Brooklyn and P.G. County are not cities, D.C.’s murder rate is about half of what it was 10 years ago. Granted, that’s because a lot of the murderers moved to P.G. County, and I’ve read that Maryland does have the highest murder and robbery (2 crimes that Baltimore seems to specialize in) rates in the nation. I doubt that New York would be in the top 25 even if you were ranking states.

Another thing is, I think this list gives too much weight to property crimes and victimless crimes like prostitution (unless of course you’re talking about forced prostitution). The murder rate and robbery rates are the ones that concern me most.

***ONLY SOME “IG’NENT” N!GGAS WOULD TAKE HONOR OF BEING IN THE MOST CRIME RIDDEN CITIES***
It’s true “Black people are taught to survive, while most white people are taught to live!”
Take pride in graduating from Howard, or owning your own home, or having kids that are thriving in school. . .not “YES!! I STAND THE BEST CHANCE OF DYING IN MY CITY!” And they have the nerve of calling it the most “hip-hop cities”. . .damn, fools.

    **THE N!GGA KINGDOM ERA**

  • Sincere

Instead of being proud of how “hard-body” your city is, do something to stop the violence and make a better place for those coming after us to live.

Today is a different world.Killing someone does not make you a gangster, instilling order and protection in your community does. People value how dangerous their city is as if it makes them tough or hardbody. I just don’t understand the world sometimes.

    Post Scriptum:
I believe New York City, which includes the five boroughs did not make the list because in some regards it is too large and diverse. New York City is the largest city in the United States including the boroughs (not cities of) the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan (Harlem), and Staten Island, which are all apart of one city. Therefore, the safe-havens of Manhattan and other parts in some sense balance out the negative elements of certain hoods like Brooklyn, Harlem, and Queens-bridge.

  • NAWLEDGE

Im suprised Miami aint on the list. We have more murders than Orlando, Duval, and Jacksonville combined. And WTF happened to New Orleans? Chicago? Houston? Los Angelas? ORLANDO?!?!?!? GTFOH!!

  • tony

what the hell? man. Fuck that list. Minneapolis, Mn should be included cuz we’re makin major movements.

  • Detroit

NYC and L.A. will never make this list for one, The list is per capita. If my city had the population of NYC you would have to times 417 murders times 8 (Detroit pop. 919,00 vs. NYC Pop. 8,000,000). In that case you have cities like Detroit (Flint, MI, St. Louis) coming out with 3,330 murders a year. Get it?

Like they’re saying up top, these cites are too nice…not to shit on the neighborhoods like ENY, The Bronx, but y’all have many nice hoods that evens out y’all city. Plus NYC and L.A. have thriving industries (more than one. Detroit have ONE struggling industry (building american cars) and people are getting laid off a record rate, so when times are hard people turn to illegal methods, illegal methods usually result in dead bodies and other crimes.

When Wall Street closes and the lights at Times Sq. shut off then NYC will maybe make the list.

FYI: I moved to NYC from Detroit…I Love my city but it’s nothing there

  • http://ftsg.net dodirty

I thinks it’s sad that they relate Hip Hop to poverty. Is it that more poverty stricken people buy more Hip Hop albums, I don’t understand their logic or their polling system.

I assume by the outcome of the polls that Hip Hop is some what a close relative of the Blues. So in more prosperous Black communities folk is listening to Jazz and neo-soul music shit like that.

I find that I do listen to my rap when I’m pissed(yuckmouth), then when I’m done I’ll throw on some neo-soul (John Lengend) or something like that to bring me back down.

I am glad my current city aint on this list!

Growing in up in the wild wild west, I am in the Midwest now, the city formerly known as Murderapolis, Minnesota which had the highest murder rate per capita in 95 and 96. It stays cold here, colder or as cold as all the other states in the Midwest so don’t think that stops shit from crackin.

It is hella ignorant to be proud of some stupid shit like that, just cause you from a hard city don’t make you hard fool. Do some of yall think its cool to bury all your homies? What about kids, or you just wouldn’t take care of them either?

Education is important and there are jobs that are cool, but you can’t just expect one with a GED. I know, that is all I had when I came here.If you are from one of those cities be glad you are alive and make something out of it.

People seem to be struggling with this “per capita” thing–all statistics are per capita, that’s what makes them statistics. That’s the only way that you can calculate the rate of anything. Also, this list takes all crime into account, and it looks like murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, and motor vehicle theft are counted equally. I’d like to see a list focused solely on murder and robbery to determine which cities are the most dangerous. I think that it’s crazy that people are trying to rep based on how high their city ranks on the list. I live in a city that has ranked highly in both murder and robbery consistently for at least the last 15 years and trust me…the shit really sucks. I know how relieved I felt over the years when I got the chance to travel to nicer places (like Orlando–I lived down there for half a year and I have my suspicions about which crimes have it ranked so high on this list, and it isn’t murder or robbery).

    Peep this shit…

The corporation that compiled these stats took a range of crimes into account and they gave the crimes different aggregate weights. Homicide > auto theft, and so on.

The real story is who buys these reports from this company and to what advantage do they use this information. I hope that you folks understand the level of business and commerce that crime plays within the U.S. GDP.

Midwest has that list on LOCK.

“If you count Missouri as South…” WHAT?! NOBODY counts Missouri as south. As a former St. Louis resident, I can tell you for a fact that Both Kansas Cities AND the Lou are all MIDWEST cities, you grabbin for straws ass mofker.

    1. Detroit, Michigan
    2. St. Louis, Missouri
    3. Flint, Michigan
    10. Cleveland, Ohio
    15. Youngstown, Ohio
    16. Cincinnati, Ohio
    17. Gary, Indiana
    18. Kansas City, Missouri
    19. Dayton, Ohio
    25. Kansas City, Kansas

Correct me if I’m wrong, but that looks like TEN midwest cities to me.

I have to think Violence = hip-hop. I hate to say but it’s true. These fool on here posting about who’s city is more dangerous. More dangerous your city = more respect. Crazy but rap has done that. I’m from the town Lower Bottoms on mine. But I live in Richmond now. These young cats out here have no respect for life. And that’s partly because of rap music. Its not all hip-hop’s fault but it a part nonetheless. Rap lyrics have become parables.

  • lil fred

u forgot new orleans. remember its da murder captial bitch

  • kingilord

It’s f@cked up that we have been conditioned to take pride in living in dangerous cities. As a resident of Detroit for all @28 of my years, I have witnessed alot of violence but it never seems to resonate amongst the community as much as it should. We seem to have a “that’s just the D” mentality, and that is very self-destructive. But, of course, there is always a bigger issue at hand. Why do we (blacks) kill each other at such high rates but we seem to almost fear exacting that same kind of vengeance against authority figures? The Willie Lynch letter, COINTELPRO and the crack era have alot to do with it.

  • http://WWW.JIMMYBLACKMUSIC.COM JIMMY BLACK

Man it is so crasy that cats not even trying to listen to music with substance for the mind. Everybody be scream bonnie and clyde when them two didn’t even had a pot to piss in. How can you have a role model that’s not worth anything spritually or financially. This type of thinking is where our nation has been heading for over a decade. Think about it, these cats don’t have realistic plans and goals. They want to be cowboys and cowgirls. So my question is what happens to the generation after them? The generation after them will watch and try to repeat the same things. THEY GOING BACKWARDS. Listen we gonna keep bringing the real.

“Since when lyrical skills had to do with killin’ a cat? What type of chitlins is that?” – DangerDoom

I think this article sends a terrible message. Hip hop isn’t about criminality. Hip hop is urban poetry, an eclectic universal genre of music that gave people in urban areas a platform to express theirself, and say some real shit, while reinventing old soul records. NYC is the most hip hop city, because that is where hip hop was born. Boogie Down Productions, the Cold Chillin’ Crew, Slick Rick, A Tribe Called Quest, Nas, Jay-Z, Biggie, Mos Def, Talib Kweli all hold it down for NYC.

If NYC isn’t #1 in your list for most hip hop cities, you don’t know what hip hop is. That’s like omitting Spain from a top 25 most Spanish countries list. The cities generating the most hip hop music, are the most hip hop cities. Hip hop is not defined by criminality. The ignorance of this article hurts my soul.
