Bol presents the re-up

Speaking of albums that are better than Kingdom Come, the new Shady Records mixtape/weed carriers album Eminem Presents: The Re-Up isn’t half that bad if you’re into that sort of thing.

Peep the review of it written by the London Bureau Chief for my own site:

I think Eminem’s one of the best MCs evar, but I’ve never been a huge fan of Eminem-produced Eminem. I liked the Eminem Show well enough, but the Marshall Mathers LP was the last time I was really crazy about an Eminem album, and that’s been a while ago.

I wasn’t a very big fan of Encore at all back when I first heard it and reviewed it for my own site, though I’ve since developed a certain appreciation for tracks like “Just Lose It” and “Ass Like That.” The videos are pretty funny too.

[Brief aside: For whatever reason, Encore is one of the few albums mentioned in my Wikipedia entry, along with the likes of Weezer's Make Believe and the Gorillaz' Demon Days.]

The Re-Up isn’t a proper Eminem album but rather a sort of hybrid mixtape/weed carriers album designed to introduce the world to Em’s new stable of weed carriers.

As the world’s most accurate encyclopedia put it:

The album first began as a street mixtape project — an underground, unofficial CD with raw production values–designed to help launch new Shady Records artists Stat Quo, Ca$his, and Bobby Creekwater. “But what happened is that the material was so good and the tracks were getting produced like a regular album, said Eminem.

I hate when that happens!

That said, Eminem is all over the Re-Up, rapping on a good half of the tracks and producing most of the rest of them. And that’s the thing: Who would’ve ever thought a weed carriers album with beats by Eminem would even be halfway enjoyable?

It’s not so much that he’s become a better producer, but I’m sure it’s just a matter of my own taste in music declining over the years, similar to how I’ve come to enjoy the most recent Jim Jones album. This shit just doesn’t sound as bad to me as it did two years ago.

As far as the actual weed carriers themselves. . . I’m not very impressed. Bobby Creekwater kinda sounds like TI, so he might have the brightest future of the bunch. The rest of them just sound like a buncha non-rapping ass weed carriers.

D-12 sans both Em and Proof (RIP) is just a new level of pathetic. The tracks with them are like if the rest of the bums in Junior Mafia tried putting out an album not only sans Biggie and Lil’ Kim, but also Lil’ Cease.

If this album had been confined to just Em, Fiddy and Obie Trice, with the occasional Ca$his, Bobby Creek or Stat Quo verse, it could’ve been a sort Shady Records equivalent of Jay’s the Dynasty. Alas, I suppose then it wouldn’t have served its original purpose.

I heard a couple songs from the Re-Up and I wasn’t impressed. “No Apologies” was pretty bad.. The one with C-Jack, M-Math, & C-Lloy (I’m reaching here, I know) was pretty okay, but I’m always scared when 50 has the best verse (“warriors remix”) on a song.

Em still sounds hungry (angry?) but his skills have fallen off. He sounds like he really just wants to say names and shit on everybody but he’s holding back. I like Obi, but I’m pretty sure his album sold like 42 copies. I could do without Stat Quo and I’ve never heard anything from Cashis (altho’ he might’ve been on that one with banks & em & fiddy–i’m not sure) or Bobby Creekwater.

Oh well. For what it’s worth: Lil’ Cease’s “Get Money” verse as well as the “Crush on you” verse > Anything anyone from d-12 has ever done. (RIP Proof)

    UNO!

  • Fernando

How much of that 1 million sold u gettin Starchild??? Get off of the sack.

Idea: Eminem stops Rapping & Turns to a life of Producing. Thus avoiding the fall-off that is no-doubt in the making. Not only would he still be Rich as hell, but he would salvage some credibility in the Rap game(no vanilla ice) & secure himself a VH1 special in 2025.
    Just a thought

Em’s producing on The Eminem Show wasn’t bad.. It got a little weird on Encore, but now it’s mostly just the same menacing synth stuff.. I like some of it, but some of it does sound the same. Dunno if he’s a good enough producer to make that his main hustle.

It may just be me, but if he can go 9 mill in just the USA with an album it seems like y’all liked him at some point… Its just a shame that people can’t be loyal listeners anymore. No one can touch Eminem lyrically. Not even Jay-Z. I guess its just too bad that Eminem doesn’t rap about shooting people, or snapping his fingers. Cause then you would love him still. No Apologies is a damn good song. I think that because Eminem is “falling off” is indicative of the state of hip hop right now, and how dudes don’t know what the fuck real hip hop is. Bottom line: Eminem doesn’t get the respect he deserves.

I liked him because he DIDN’T rap about any of that shit–He was just a broke dude trying to survive, but he just doesn’t have it anymore. I’m sure he could make another classic, but does he want to? He doesn’t sound like he does. Hovi might have done everything he needs to do, but he’s at least trying to expand his repertoire and speak on more worldly things (minority report), or give a more personal look into his life (do u wanna ride, beach chair).

Word. It sucks that Proof isn’t here cuz he had a family and people that loved him, but he was playing with fire. He wasn’t a regular dude.. Obie got shot on some cold blooded shit, he wasn’t looking for trouble.. Not that Big Proof was, but sometimes you just gotta know better. P.S. – Stop hatin on Eminem. You can’t deny his skills, everyone in the industry admires his lyrical ability (i.e. Jay-Z, Redman, Method Man, Dr. Dre, Busta Rhymes etc… Pretty much everyone except Ja Rule and Jermaine Dupri)

alright, Em is still dope (sans the “Dr. Seus, Mother Goose” style he’s been rocking lately- The RZA warned us about this shit on the 2nd Wu album), but his beats r Barsura*!!! POINT BLANK PERIOD… The only reason people take them is bcuz A: They hope some lil cracka will see “produced by Eminem” and buy the shit (hasn’t happened yet) and B: bcuz their FREE- so fuck it, let’s see if A works… He don’t charge for beats, cuz he just wants them placed on albums- plus he makes his cake on the back end (no LA Reid in chinese slippers & silk scarves)…

The Re-Up SUCKED, and i was hoping it would be good… i deleted 4/5 of the album from my ipod already… Damn shame…

And yeah Jay-Z might sell 800,000 the 1st week, but why the fuck not??? He was campaigning like he was running for President of The U.S.A.!!! Giving out water in Africa, touring airport Hangers for “exclusive” concerts, “106 & Jay”, Budweiser commercials, video’s with famous Nascar drivers, etc.

Shitttt, the only thing he DIDN’T do was have a live debate, but that was pretty much covered in his jabs at 50, Cam, & Jim on the album & freestyles …

    Rey…
So Biggie did it all in two albums? Well, I guess what you’re saying is if Em got murked after Marshall Mathers LP, then he would be just as good as BIG? Don’t knock the dude for bein alive… With Pac bein dead Biggie wouldn’t have had anything else to say, and no one would have any reason to listen to him. So, now Em has moved on from his beef with Ja, and with JD, so what I’m sayin is maybe Biggie would have “fallen off” too in the eyes of some…
Eminem came up as a battle rapper, and that’s what he’s best at, and so now that he’s got no one to beef with [for a couple reasons (being that people he beefs with threaten his child, and because most people in the industry are afraid of his talent)] he has to switch his style up and talk about different things.

PS – This over usage of “sans” is getting fucking annoying. Just say “without” God damn it.

Your trippin. Blue Carpet has at least 10-12 good songs (in my opinion). Probably about 5-6 mediocre / bad songs & a few skits. If you just edited out the bad songs, you would have a regular length album with some slumpers on it.

Once again, BIG did it all in 2 albums, and even then.. He had his shit down before Life After Death dropped, cuz after Puff lost his deal at uptown BIG revamped his style and cut “Warning” and “Big Poppa”.. So you could argue that he was 90% done before the year turned 1995. His story telling just got way better. Nobody’s been that good SINCE. (please not the SINCE)

I’m not paying for Snoop’s shit, my dnld play just fine!

And 4 the last time, this is my rating on the “greats”:

Eminem is the BEST EVER word for word, syllable for syllable… Pun is 2nd, Kool G Rap 3rd (but he fathered their style so he’s technically 1st, we’ll call that the “Kool G Rap law”)

Biggie is the best “lifestyle rapper”/ line for line rappers, with Jay-Z at 2nd (for technical perposes Jay is 1st, but REAL niggaz know what time it is), Big Daddy Kane 3rd (Kool G Rap law applicable)

Nas is the illest “quote for quote” rapper EVER, with Rakim coming REAL CLOSE on 2nd (Kool G Rap law applicable)…

And 2Pac’s in a whole ‘nother category by himself, he the GREATEST “TOTAL PACKAGE” rapper EVER!!! He had an ILL voice, he wrote deep songs about social issues, he wrote scathing diss records (“…that’s why i fucked ur bitch, u fat mothafucka…”), he wrote songs that made girls go crazy, AND he looked like an “icon”… Combine that with family lineage (Moms the Black Panther, Pops the drug dealer), along with the fact that he was a dope actor, and u ahve the “GREATEST TOTAL PACKAGE” ever in Hip-Hop and maybe music…

    YEAH I SAID IT!

  • Fernando

    Big >>>>>>> Em.

I cant believe this is a real debate.

Biggie has songs that are etched into the history of Hip-Hop. Classics that EVERY person under 30 has memories of. My 8th grade through 11th grade years were set to the soundtrack of All Eyez On Me & Life After Death.

Eminem to me is known for some irritating songs that 13 yr old white kids sweat, some really good lines, some great battle-raps & freestyles, & one good album.

NOT EVEN CLOSE. I dont care what Em does for the next ten years.

  • SONNY CHEEBA

@ Fern, “Boss’s Life” is just Busta Rhymes’ intro to one of his OLD albums, re-played… “round here” is a FAKE 50 Cent song, listen to it! “LAX” is annoying… “I wanna…” is wack, AKon is boring! “candy”, let’s get serious…

    so i don’t know bro…

  • content

lol… at all ya’ll criticizing Jay for Kingdom Come and giving BIG the benefit of the doubt in regards to what he would have done.

If, when Vol. 1 or Blueprint dropped you were asked if Jigga would ever make an average album you would have likely said no.

We just don’t know with Biggie so how can we rate him so highly. Yes, in the early 90′s he was a God amongst men but don’t put him over rappers who were doing it back then and were smart enough not to get offed.

Ill put Jay, Nas, Rakim, Biggie, , KGR, & Big Daddy Kane in there for NY. (Rakim is soooo much sicker than Em BTW)

Ill put Pac, Saafir, Ras Kass, Brotha Lynch, E-40 . In there for the west.

Dawg sales don’t determine the quality of an album. Jay record was classic compared to the garbage that was put out this year. Anyway.
