Southerners quit yer bitchin’

[UPDATE: Bun B quit yer bitchin']

Pseudo intelligent music critics, who make their living patronizing certain elements in the black community, like to claim that backpackers are the most annoying group of fans in hip-hop. I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the true most annoying group of fans in hip-hop (other than, of course, women) are fans of southern hip-hop.

The knock against backpackers seems to be that they’re boring and negative. They spend too much time telling you what they’re against rather than actually telling you what they’re for. Many of them even have the sheer balls to suggest hip-hop is not nearly as good as it used to be.

For business purposes, hip-hop can’t appear any better or worse during any given year, at least until the TIs find something to replace it. Reggaeton, perhaps?

Southern rap fans, meanwhile, make it a point to draw no distinction between the best and the worst their particular segment of the hip-hop community has to offer. They may not actually pretend to like “Laffy Taffy,” but they’ll be quick to call your ass a bigot if you suggest that it’s arguably history’s greatest abortion in musical form.

And they all rallied around Pimp C as if he was Leonard Peltier or somebody, but come to find out he can hardly rap. Is everybody aware that he was locked up for pulling out a gun on a woman in a mall? Personally, I don’t find his release fair to all the rest of us men who have resisted the urge to commit an act of violence against a woman.

As far as I’m concerned, his ass should go back to jail. Where’s the hip-hop feminism community when you need them? Wait, does this constitute snitching, or would it have to be your sister or something? I generally advocate staying out of another couple’s business, even if it is in a public place such as a mall.

I can understand that this is the first time their communities have produced anything the critical establishment even pretended to like since the heyday of Blind Melon and Better than Ezra (UGK fans, do your homework), but I’m not going to sit here and pretend to like something I don’t really like, especially if I have no financial stake in the matter.

The truth of the matter is that the southern rap of today, both in its style of rappin’ and especially its beats, bears very little relation to the hip-hop most of us grew up listening to. In that sense, it’s not unlike disco was to rock music in the late ’70s. Interestingly enough, disco artists also tried to cry racism when rock fans burned disco albums on the field at Chicago’s Comiskey Park.

In 2006, southern rap is the style of rap music that the tall Israelis who run the music industry have decided to promote, to the detriment of all other styles of rap music. Therefore, not unlike the Mexicans who think they’re retaking America’s Southwest, fans of southern rap no longer have any legitimate claim that they’re being discriminated against.

Oh yeah, I should add that although I agree with the premise of this post I do think Bol unfairly singled out UGK.

  • deville423

excuse me one mutha frickin minute as a fan of music of all kinds id just like to say that you are all full of shit first off dont talk bout what you dont know that woman elevated the situations and her male friends present acted like they wanted to jump pimp and youre a pussy for wishing prison on any man. secondly what you hear today is us expressing ourselves dont get mad cause j.santana the only nigga out the east coast representing pimp is a legend and orginally a producer who has smooth way of spitting that we apeal to i came to sight to find some update news cause im in iraq youre just as biassed as the source any replies send them to deville423@netzero.com you disrespectful bastards

  • Jade Star

Laffy Taffy is really garbage though as is anything by Dem Franchize Boys and Lil Flip. TI, Jeezy, Wayne, Outkast, Jody Breeze, are pretty much it from the South worth listening to…okay maybe Ludacris…

  • http://xxlmag.com Bol

    >byron – what UGK albums are you familiar with?

I was basing this primarily on the song from the new TI album.

    >i came to sight to find some update news cause im in iraq

    Good.

  • FuckOuttaHere

So many stereotypes, so little time.

Try not to clump all southern fans into one pile, please.

“I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the true most annoying group of fans in hip-hop (other than, of course, women) are fans of southern hip-hop.”

Fuck outta here with that bullshit.

Where’s CeeLo when you need him?

  • http://yahoo.com sage

even though im from the south i’ll say that ugk is garbage, along with alot of other southern rappers(mainly texas), but you still cant talk about southern music just because it doesn’t fit your own style. and besides other people have different types of music that they like. and eskay stoop dickin ridin on dudes who don’t agree with southern music

  • Dell

The sad thing it’s selling. Ghost can’t sell, but these Laffy Taffy cats can? WTF?? This is all Puffs fault. He was the first to make the TIs see that gibberish over a hot beat could sell.

Man fuck you. ya’ll mofo’s just jealous that ya’ll bullshit ass music ain’t gettin no shine. get the fuck outta here. Remember the saying

  • Fuckwhoeverwrotethisblog

all ya’ll who hatin…ask ya mama what she gotta say about southern rap…

Bol: what do u think about southern rap?

    Mom: mmmmmmmmbbbmmmmbmbbmbmbmbmbm!!

Bol: mom can u speak up? i can’t understand you with all those southern dicks in your mouth!!!

  • P-Matik

Yeah I cosign blaming it all on Puff.

UGK is/was okay. I ain’t hating on the south but since the 80s, a lot of stuff coming out of there is behind times as far as lyrical style. Outkast and the DF pushed the lyrical bar way up but these johnny come lately losers pushed it back down.

The south just isn’t really about lyrics, its “ridin’ music” to them.

  • Mikey Ess AKA SukedowN

I am assuming by “Southern Rap” you’re referring mainly to the last 3-4 years of pop rap thats came from the south (Starting with Lil Jon, through Mike Jones, up to D4L/DFB).

Southern rap over the last 13 years has birthed so many different brands of rap, varying from garbage to greatness.

Artists/groups like Scarface, OutKast, Goodie Mobb, maybe UGK and maybe Field Mobb, maybe first couple Ludacris CD’s, ect. are what I think of the top of the dome when I think of good Southern Rap.

Then you have the Mike Jones’, the D4Ls, the DFBs, the young Jeezys, etc. that although coincidentaly are from the South, bear no resemblance to the good/great southern rap mentioned further above. Because they are from the South, the are now referred to as southern rap, and it’s unforntunate cuz they are garbage.

I don’t really know where T.I. fits into this puzzle.

A distinction must be made on what Southern Rap consists of.

I think the undertone of your article may suggest this, but it clearly needs to be done. I think the undertone of your article MIGHT suggest this.

P.S. Pimp C is a much better rapper than most any of those selling a million or more in the south now and then. Listen to Dirty Money then talk speak your piece on him.

I think the undertone of your article MIGHT suggest this

  • http://xxlmag.com Bol

^Well you notice most of the negative responses to this post failed to draw any kind of distinction between the good and the bad.

They were just like, Fuck you for talking about our shit.

That’s exactly what I was talking about in this post, and it happens all the time.

Thank you all for proving my point.

  • MOOSE

Southern rap is setting us light years back, but why didnt you mention Outkast or Goodie mob?

Dude is outta line for saying Pimp C needs to be back in jail…he served his time for making a terrible decision, and thought many long days and nights about his indiscretion. I do agree that rap has split to several different genres and that shows how Powerful Hip Hop as a culture has grown. Everybody need to do what they region is known for doing. If you East Coast hip hop don’t be swangin’ on da South’s nuts trying to make music like them. Midwest bout da only region that’s allwoed to do it all cuz we got it all….

Suck my left nut and swing on my right one.

This is a form of southerner discrimination right here. You used “laffy taffy” as the poster child for southern hip hop, singled out UGK and had absolutly no subject matter on TI.

You are generalizing southern hip hop when you bring all forms of southern hip hop together.

NO ONE takes D4L seriously, UGK deserves their shot in the shotlight, PIMP C can’t rap, but neither can Yayo, or Parappa the Rapper Pharell, but I didn’t see you blasting them, and the Free Pimp C thing they were doing was just showing support. EVERYONE does something dumb at least once in life but that doesn’t mean they should be punished for the rest of their life.

What about the other people you didn’t name that fall under your “NEW” genre “SOUTHERN HIP HOP”?

Atlanta and Port Arthur aren’t the only cities that produce hip hop oh sorry SOUTHERN HIP HOP. What about houston, New Orleans, Memphis, Miami, etc… You can’t isolate a reigon by labeling it SOUTHERN HIP HOP, from my understanding Hip hop is hip hop, it doesn’t matter what part of the states you live in, hell for that matter any part of the world.

When you go to the store they don’t have a West Coast Hip Hop, Mid West Hip Hop, South Hip hop, or a East coast hip hop section.

The most of the people who bitch about hip hop is east coast cats(mainly NYC people). Forreal, southern fans have no beef when it pertains to hip hop, we hear yall constantly bitching bout the state of hip hop and southern hip hop, mad that your coast is no longer on top. Its not our fault, we have good rappers too, some you heard of, some you havent heard of. Yall complain about hip hop and who’s selling albums and stuff but you dont even support your own artists. You dont even go out and buy your own artists cd, but you want other coasts to support your artist. Be real homie and grow up. Its east coast cats complaining bout us, you got your facts wrong. We have bad artist, we dont deny that, but dont pretend like yall dont have garbage too. 50, dipset and alot of other cats on the NYC scene. Stop being close minded and wipe your eyes with the cleanex cuz thats some straight crying going on. Go out and support your artists and you’ll see a difference, tell the music companies to start playing yall shit instead of bullshit like Laffy Taffy, cuz we know why shit gets played alot, music companies control shit like that. They control airwaves for the most part. They control alot of what gets heard. But stop bitchin, its retarded.

  • Sonny

I think that major corporations are ruining hip hop. Not the south. They promote music that’s easy for kids in the suburbs to sing along to so they can sell the most records. It’s not a north/south or east/west thing because the east coast puts out bullshit too. Listen to the whole dipset, noreaga, 50 cent, Tony yayo. All weak. Ghostface too. Somebody tell me why the magazines are so on this guys nuts.

But basically, I just want to say that there are some incredible lyricist from the south. You just don’t get to hear them.

P.S. I’m from Cleveland so I have no bias.

  • http://nahright.com KingML

“Personally, I don’t find his release fair to all the rest of us men who have resisted the urge to commit an act of violence against a woman.”

    That had me laughing.

I think southern music in general is pretty sub-par as far as lyrics say. as 50 said “they just want to have fun.”

People in the South have always been a few steps behind; slavery, Texas, bible thumpers, KKK, the Bush family.

But, it really shows in their music, they seem to have this god given gift to make music that stupid people like to dance to. I don’t mean that people in the South are generally stupid for making music like this, but the people who like music that essentially has the same content through entire catalogs of albums and artists are the idiots who keep this industry alive.

How many artists can make albums about the same god damned thing? “I love doing drugs, I love selling drugs, I love drug money, and I love ho’s, guns and liquor and smoking weed even though weed in the south is about as powerful as oregano.”

I don’t care where you are from, if your entire music genre sounds the same due to the fact you are from a certain geographical area, something is wrong with that area.

Not all jazz sounds the same from the south, not all rock and roll does either, but yet all the rap does, how strange? It’s almost like everyone is jumping on the bandwagon to make easy money because its EASY to do. It’s easy to talk about something you heard on a UGK album or on TIs shit.

Just wait and see, when Southern people understand numbers enough to read TIs soundscans numbers, then see how many imitators we get.

Try something new, South, and I don’t mean slavery again.

kingml, if you’re going to reference someone from the eastcoast, at least name someone good. it’s not like 50 cent is dropping lyrical gems. “i love you like a fat kid love cake”. wow! what a genius.

  • LOS

Niggas are funny. Bol is a real funny nigga. Like Moose said, how come Bol aint mention Kast, Goodie Mob, DF, Geto Boys, etc. He only metioned acts that even he claimed we “don’t pretend to like.” That would be equivalent to me saying all NY rap sucks and base it on the mundane material and carbon copy rappers. I mean, the only niggas “on top” from NY is Gunit, so them niggas determine the talent of NY? I hope not. I can’t forget dipset, but only about three of them dope, and they still don’t sell for real. But I know that there are some dope niggas on the east coast, west coast, and the midwest; and if I was critiquing an area I would at least go after the top talent. The critically acclaimed niggas, and the ones we respect. My point is, Bol, his dick riders, and niggas like him really do come down hard on the south all the time without taking to account all the talent we possess. And niggas like them have been for years (ie Booing Outkast at the Source Awards). I think it’s embedded in them or some shit. So at least next time you diss the south, name it crap hop(wack ass tag too), at least critique the MCs we revere and not the niggas we don’t even “pretend to like.” Makes more sense to me.
Oh yea, and how you rate a nigga with several CDs off a feature?

  • http://nahright.com eskay

I love how everybody assumes Bol is from the East Coast. Get over it people from the South. 98% of yall have the same lame argument when your music is criticised. No matter what you say, there’s a good chance that people who are not from your region (whatever it may be) are probably not gonna ever fully embrace your type of music. The West Coast never fully felt the East Coast and vice versa. Most of the arguments I hear criticising Southern music make sense, while most of the retorts are nothing but emotional displays accusing the other person of “hating.” yeah we’re mad cuz Jeezy went platinum. get over yourself. I don’t own a label or get paid when any artist moves units so I could care less what their sales are like. I enjoy alot of Southern music, but the way ya’ll fucking act like you’re the first coast to ever do it big makes me wanna talk that shit.

And Sage, Why don’t you hop off my dick lil’ homey.

As a student of journalism, I can’t help but notice that this is horribly written. In this article, you set out to slam southern hip hop fans who feel that they’re being discriminated against. But you only support that with a few sentences at the end talking about Israeli record company execs. I don’t really have an opinion on your point either way, but at least support your argument as opposed to going off on tangents (What does Pimp C’s legal situation have to do with any of this?)

lol your funny Bol, most of the comments made by people defending the south or whatever in reference to your column was valid. LOS, Sonny, Doc Flav, Blood Hound aka Slum Lord all made valid points. But yet you pointed out a few and defined it as MOST of the retorts are nothing but emotional displays accusing the other person of “hating”. Typical, whats even funnier is that your column is based on emotional displays cuz you pointed out certain artists and tried to generalize a coast. You went from attacking(yes if you really understand what you wrote and look who you pointed out, it was attacking) to attacking their fans in reference to your point you were making just cuz they dont agree with you, never mind the fact that some of them in here made great points that clearly makes your column very flaud.

here’s a perfect example of what I think Bol is getting at and what I was talking about:

    Dr. Flav says:

“We Aint Bitchin Yall Just Jelly.”

Uhmmm no, really we’re not. Like I always say, jealous of what? Ya’ll really aren’t selling that much and you can’t see us musically so what are we mad at? Radio play? Spins on BET and MTV? I haven’t watched videos in years. If you’re a fan of hip hop and you actually consider an artists sales or commercial success when determining quality, you should just kill yourself now.

I’ve seen most of you commenting on either Bol’s site or mine, so don’t come in here now and try to act like we’re generalizing. You know damn well we appreciate good music no matter where it’s from so please, save it. If Bol doesn’t like Pimp C, don’t fucking get all “how dare he! Pimp C’s a legend!” I enjoy a Pimp C tune every now and then, for what it is. Pimp C may be a Southern legend but you need to understand there’s a difference. You think anybody on my block knows who the fuck Pimp C is? Please, when I posted his pic after he got out, motherfuckers I know were like who’s that old dude? Now let anybody post a pic of a Rakim or a Big Daddy Kane, I can guarantee you nobody is gonna be like “who’s that?” See the difference?

  • sonnycheeba

The music industry hasnt been friendly to talent for quite sometime but this southern rap/Reggaeton shit is gettin out of hand.

They should have banned any rap music from Mississippi,Texas, or any other landlocked state a long time ago.

  • D Mind

I’ve seen most of you commenting on either Bol’s site or mine, so don’t come in here now and try to act like we’re generalizing. First off, dont get mad at what i said, i was using reference and i was talking to you both. Your post is very defensive, having to explain yours and Bol’s position on this. But you have yet to discredit the people i mentioned posts, but they brought up good points that discredited his.

Second, its a double edge sword, you say mufuckas from the south get mad when somebody says they dont like Pimp C, but dont yall do the same if we make the same reference towards lets say, Rakim? Come on man i know you see how one sided that is. And dont tell me yall dont do it cuz ive see alotta websites(hip hop) where this arguement is made on. Plus even tho you do have people who dont know who Pimp C is, its the same in the south if you showed a picture of Rakim. Double edge sword. Plus why bring up Pimp C, people respect Scarface way more than Pimp C here in the south. Another mistake made in the column.

Third, this is the first time ive read a Bol column. A person on a site gave us a link to this and here i am posting my view. Dont get upset at people dissing yall about your comments cuz not everybody has to agree. Yall made some good points and so have people defending the south. The problem lies in were it became bias and one sided. We’ve made some good points but all yall seem to be concerned with is your own views and dont want to here what we got to say. Yall need to really grow up.

  • D Mind

And i was using Dr. Flav’s post as a reference to Bol’s and your post if your wondering why i quoted that.

I mean i’am from louisiana and what yall don’t understand is that we don’t respect people like d4l or franchise boys . For the most part they are as big a joke to us as they are to you. But we feel the ones that are lyrically sound like ludacris, lil wayne , and chamillionaire are not getting their respect.

You also have to remember the culture difference . In the south we have fun and dance. That is what d4l , crunk artists and others are basically for.

I would put lil wayne against any new york rapper!

  • D Mind

I meant eskay’s post, not Doc Flav’s. Sorry about that.

I have an idea! How about everyone just supports what they like and stop trying everyone else down!!!! Discussing this topic is like beating a dead horse. Just pointless. People who comment on these blogs act like the ppl who control all of this (the record companies, the artists, the record companies, the record companies) give a f**k about all of you all’s opinions. As long as they’re making money they could care less where the music is from or “whether it’s real hip hop”. So my point is show your support by not showing your support. And one more thing: SALES DO NOT EQUAL QUALITY! I’m tired of hearing that used as an excuse for putting out crappy music. I mean how many different ways can you say “shake that a**”, smoke this weed, f**k that ho, get drunk”. Oh and choppin’ and screwin’ ish is pointless. And I say this as person who has lived in the south her whole life and curently resides in texas.

  • http://www.nwemusiconline.com Trouble Maker

It is amazing to see that the same cats dissing the South came to a whole new website to do the same. That is disappointing. The lone nigerian said it best….yall kicking a dead horse. If you are using “hot” as a discriptive word to define what you like, then just stop talking. Because in my opinion east coast music lacks a lot. They still killing folks, they still selling drugs, they still flashy….they just lack a good beat.

lil wayne says everything we want to say.

And to the radio stations, I’m tired o’ being patient

no one really likes D4l or DFB. They are only relevent in the clubs. but that’s all people talk about.

and it’s not just the south that’s rapping about selling crack, smoking weed and f#@*ing hoes, thats all anybody’s talking about regardless of where they are from.

  • KLO

    D Mind,

Oh please, all of you know who the fuck Rakim is, don’t play yourself. If you don’t then your in worse shape then I thought.

What valid points have any of you put forward? I don’t see anything here that I need to refute. I already said I don’t generalize Southern artists so don’t give me that shit that we think D4L reps the south. Just admit that there’s more wack shit coming out of there then dope shit. When ya’ll artists are good, they can be really good, but when they’re bad, man they are straight up awful.

For example I really enjoyed Carter 2, but the songs I didn’t enjoy, like Fireman, are so fucking bad it’s not even funny. Like what was that shit, seriously? How did anybody let Weezy out of the studio with that trash?

Who the fuck are you to sit behind you safe little cubicle and criticize who we are and what we do? For more than 20 years. Southern Artists and fans have faithfully supported any and all hip hop that was offered. We accepetced everyone on their own merits, gave evryone a fair listen, and then spoke. In light of you comments and views, it occured to me that you haven’t given near as much open mindedness to our music as we have to yours. The reasons I say yours is that it doensn’t what type of music came out, we supported it, so we in no doubt supported whatever the fuck you listen to. To think that all we know is what we do, or that we may know nothing at all is preposterous. If you’re a paying member of Soundscan, you can see that ALL MUSIC SELLS IN THE SOUTH! 5 percenter? Bought it. Backpackers? Bought it. Black power, Wu-Tang, horrorcore, need I say more? Meanwhile, after 25 years of unconditionally holdin down all forms of rap/hiphop music, as soon as we even try to join a club we bought and help build the clubhouse for, they wanna deny us access. Well guess what you Elks lodge habitatin, Masters in Augusta wanna-be, finger-pointin behind the bushes, throwin a rock and runnin ass nigga, I just thought I’d tell you to take whatever preconcieved notions you have built up in your air and watertight cranium AND STICK IT IN YO PUSSY! I guarentee you the TRUE FANS AND MAKERS OF HIP HOP JUST MIGHT DIFFER WITH YOU! I know this because I am friends with Cool Herc, Grandmaster Caz, Melle Mel, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap and other extremely well known originators and creators of this artform. The problem now is the act of causing division and dissention amongst the fans by people whom are not in the know. You see, YOU may not like Laffy Taffy or DFB or whoever, and you know what, that’s your GOD-given right. Hate all you want on the South, Southern rappers, or just Pimp C, since you brought him up. IT STILL WONT HELP WHOEVER YOU LIKE SELL SHIT! Talib Kweli: close friend of UGK. De La Soul: close friends of UGK. Kanye West, Common, Dead Prez, close firends of UGK. Jam Master Jay, 2 Pac, Biggie Smalls: ALL FUCKING FANS OF UGK, and I dont say this from second hand conversation. These people told me this from their own mouths, yet you would have people believe otherwise. They could learn to be openminded about the music the listened and the regions the music was popular in, so it should come at no surprise these people went further thatn the average artists. Whatever alterior motive you may have is trying to bring down the Southern rise, it won’t work. God kills hate with love. Oh yeah, by the way, as far as your comments on my brother and his reason for incarceration, he pulled a gun on a group of people thrreatening him in a mall. Only the girl went back and told the police, that’s why it seems as if it was between only him and the girl. The problem is, misinformed people give misinformation and cause misfortune to the learing. I hate to call this the blind leading the blind, because by the look of your commment posts, they know what’s up. So instead of just going to New York, screaming and ranting in White Nigga’s office, I came to see you on your turf, because I’m no coward. I’m willing to come in your yard: care to come in mine? Right a rhyme, let;s see what you have the hip-hop community musically. Oh and make sure it’s Grammy-nominated when you do it, because mine was. And while you’re at it ask Nas, Jay-Z, Papoose, Camron,, Russell Simmons, 50 Cent, Fat Joe, Chino XL, Self Scientific, Cyrpess ill, Snoop Dogg, Ludacris or anybody else in this industry you like if Pimp C is wack. I bet they bark on you louder than I want to. God forbid you’re in the wrong place and the wrong time like Pimp and have to spend 4 years of your life behind bars. You’re a black man, so fuck how educated and well read you are. You’ll ride just like Pimp, and you’ll be sorry about it, just like Pimp. The only difference: nobody’s gonna wear a fuckin t-shirt with yo face on it. Leave the South alone, becausse we’re just tryin to eat. Quit bloggin and write a book if you got more goin on besides gossip and shootin slugs. Because after blogging has come and gone, and XXL is no longer on stands or online(which I would hate to see), UGK and our musical legacy will survive. Will your triflin rants sustain?

  • http://nahright.com eskay

D Mind, how can anybody call themself a hip hop fan and not know who Rakim is? That has nothing to do with East Coast/Down South. That’s like saying you don’t know who Ice Cube is.

  • http://houstonsoreal.blogspot.com MattSonzala

Wow I dont even have to say anything now. Awesome. Thanks Bun!

  • D Mind

Thats easy Eskay, cuz you have hardcore rap fans(the ones who know hip hop’s history) and you have casual fans. Casual fans know who Cube, 2pac, Biggie, Nas and others are. Cuz their names are out there to the masses.I guess you can say its a house hold name. In case you didnt know, casual fans rule hip hop these days, they lack knowledge of history in rap and if they do know, they still dont care and are inclined to say something like that rapper sucked by then even tho that rapper is considered a legend. This is a problem every where(East,West,South). Not understanding the cultural difference, the region difference, so they cant relate and what they cant relate to, they dont listen to. I dont know how many times a cat from NYC on message boards said Scarface sucks and nobody knows or cares who he is and they never heard “The Diary”, but rant on others who say they dont like Nas’s music and things he sucks. Basicly its a cultural difference and no the south is not just about dancing and partying. The same yall say about the south and groups like D4L, we can say about groups like Dipset and people like 50. Now saying this Bun B, 2 post above me said some real talk, about Pimp C and about this whole situation. He should be a column over this knuckle head who wrote this one.

  • http://www.myspace.com/bigchiefslapaho JJ “the Don” Chianese

Your words are in total ignorance. You continue to perpetuate a pitiful cycle of individuals who feel they can speak on something they obviously haven’t taken the time to educate themselves about.

You wishing another man (black or not) to go back to jail speaks volumes of your character. You prolly think the “Stop Snitchin’” campaigns a joke too.

I bet you roll up ya windows on one of those off occassions you actually find yourself in the hood.

Alas your ignorance is your own, and you’re so entitled to it. Suckapunks generally don’t understand it to begin with but go back and really listen to it………they ain’t called the Underground Kingz for nothin’.

This is the dumbest shit I’ve read all day……I think my eyes are bleeding.

  • http://nahright.com eskay

    D Mind,

If you go back to one of my previous posts I said basically the same thing. That people from one region aren’t neccessarily going to embrace the music of another region. I say that because, like Bol says in his post, ya’ll get so mad when we dismiss ANY southern music.

Yesterday on my site this kid argued that when Ghost dissed D4L, that he was really dissing the whole South. Of course he wasn’t, but ya’ll are too defensive to take it any other way.

I understand what you’re saying about the casual rap fans, but quite frankly I have no time for those people. I take my hip hop seriously and if you don’t (not you personally, but what I call ‘part time’ hip hop fans) then I don’t want to talk to you. Am I an elitist? Maybe, but I don’t give a fuck, hip hop means too much to me to just treat it like some something to dance to or play while I’m driving to work.

This shit is our Jazz, our Blues, our Rock and Roll and we’re letting it be marginalized by the record execs and marketing people who could care less about it, some of who are part time hip hop fans themselves.

Believe it or not, I have alot of love for the South. I own Trill and I think that shit is fire, but the average person in NY doesn’t know much about UGK outside of Big Pimpin, and even if they did they may not necessarily like them anyway, which goes back to what was said about regional differences.

  • bradb

Bun B just owned old buddy Bol! LOL! I’m gonna state this right now….you just put yourself in a whole heep of shit! LOL! NY (East Coast) rap fans are BY FAR the worst! They feel superior since they started the movement! Move over guys your days are over! LOL!

Your holier-than-thou attitude will catch you a bow to the face. We have been true heads since the birth of hip-hop spread like wildfire across the country those two and one-half decades ago. We represent our surroundings, and do it with talent and class. Just because certain artists put out garbage, you seem more than willing to throw the baby out with the bathwater, and for that I can only offer a hearty and heartfelt “FUCK YOU”.

A curse upon thee and your progeny until your death.

    You have no relevance.

Well Eskay, like i said, its a double edge sword. Its works both ways, you made a good point but they way you view it can be and is viewed from our perspective in relation to yall. We dont generally rant bout yall dissing us, its the lack of knowledge yall use to do so and thats what Bol mistake is and read Bun B’s post cus he his the nail with the hammer. We dont go around whining about the east coast and the state of hip hop. You still got it wrong also, its not the South who has a problem with east coast and their dissing, its the east coast who has the problem with the south, its the lack of knowledge of the south is whats causing the problem. Yall need to look it from the other perspective and stop listening to what your radio hosts and rappers, and etc are saying. Put your hears lower to the ground to hear and comprehend what some of the REAL hip hop artists from the south are saying. Stop automatically putting something off you dont understand.

Matter of fact we bought ya’lls music and played it on the radio(even to the detriment of our local talent). We stayed on the grind, sold our music outta the trunks of cars and in mom and pop shops and cultivated a following. Now it’s finally paying off. • Southern Smoke

Bol first of all you obviously don’t know shi.. about Southern music. Pimp C sucks as a rapper? You basing that off 1 verse? Get outta her with you’re no knowledge comments. I can understand some people ESPECIALLY non southerners wouldn’t like something like D4L/DFB but if you didn’t grow up or live down here you probably aint gonna feel it’s not your enviroment. And with you saying that Hip-Hop is not the same as before is because it is evolving and is now more complicated than a simple beat with less complex words. Now people have much more to talk about and different ways to make beats. Like anything if you want to be better than the next guy you gotta do something different. Plus since we in the south we gonna have a different flavor than anyone else. Now for hot Souther Artist lets go down the list. T.I, Luda, Chamillionaire, Pimp C-Bun B, Trick, Jeezy (no matter what you say that nigga got some sick lines that are original), Scareface, Ghetto Boys, Damn can’t forget to mention Wayne, B.G, Juvey, I’m gonna stop there. Now we may not have poetic type rappers that are hot right now.(atleast not that I can think of while typing this post)like Nas,Common and Talib Kwali and people like that but doesn’t mean we ain’t got em. But you know what? None of them niggas that you commented about give 2 cents about what you gotta say about there style or where they from cuz right now they gettin more money than u ever could.

I just had a young lady interview me today for bout 2 hours on THIS EXACT SAME SUBJECT.

Then I come back and see Bun Let Loose on his big pussy ass.

Aside from the CLASSICS that have come from the south from the first Geto Boyz and Too Hard To Swallow, Comin Out Hard, etc….up till now.

I was tellin the girl, the UNITY that Pimp, Lil J, Bun, Banner and everybody is bringin about, IS MORE INFLUENTIAL, MORE POSITIVE, AND IS GONNA PRODUCE MORE POSITIVE RESULTS THAN THE SHIT THEY TRYIN TO CLAIM IS SO MUCH “SUPERIOR” TO THE SOUTH.

You old bitch ass nigga. Do you even KNOW any of the South music outside of what you hear and see on the radio??

Do you not understand that the city of New Orleans ALONE, has put out more quality albums than you can combine outta NY or wherever the FUCK you think is superior.

MEMPHIS, HOUSTON, even off the radar albums from Missippi cats and Alabama cats are some classic material, that never gets publicized.

These old prissy ass niggas that pose to be so much BETTER than everybody else, are actually perpetuating MORE IGNORANCE, than the shit they tryin to criticize.

Feel me. Thats why I very rarely even take the time to address these old bitch ass niggas.

No BXCONNECT thats not what he’s saying. But at the same time, even if he was, the same applies to the east or whatever region. You said: “We dont go around whining about the east coast and the state of hip hop. You still got it wrong also, its not the South who has a problem with east coast and their dissing, its the east coast who has the problem with the south, its the lack of knowledge of the south is whats causing the problem.”

Now I’m gonna have to disagree there, because while alot of New Yorkers bitch about Southern music, I hear alot of shit talking coming from the South as well. Lately I’ve been hearing alot of “Oh ya’ll rap about the same shit all the time” as if down south artists don’t do the same thing and rap about basically the same shit our artists do.

I also hear alot of arrogance from disrespectful motherfuckers who are on some “ha ha, the south is on top, fuck new york shit” like they don’t know where shit started. It’s shit like that that adds fuel to the fire and when up top niggas here that of course they’re gonna turn around and dis ya’ll. I mean who’s to say who started the back and forth, but the way things are going East/South relations can only get worse if we can’t find some kind of middle ground and mutual respect for each other.

  • nyte

for a jounalism “pioneer” you sure seem to be horrible at taking criticism…why try something revolutionary…and get off your ass and do something…this is at least the fifteenth time I’ve read someone bitching about how the south is killing hip hop and so forth, but no artist who could be attributed with birthing the artform seems to give a damn…I respect your right to have an opinion, hell, I enlisted to defend that right, but your argument is shotty at best…many of the artists out now suck…all coasts considered…to dissect hip hop and focus on one coast is the essence of hating…if you wanted to make a statement about hip hop in its whole, then that would be much different, but you are in fact blaming the state of hip hop on the south…and if you want an example of the south rapping about something not related to drugs, hoes, and money (though i havent heard much of that from the east either lately)you should listen to They think I’m crazy by Chamillionaire…its sounds like its just a conversation, but is a metaphor (or simile) for his life and hip hop, and what it can do to you… on another note, basing your idea of a rapper off of a single feature is bad practice…If I did that papoose is the worst rapper birthed since…well…jesus. But I know enough to listen to other things before I just generalize an artist…that being said, Ive heard alot of mike jones…good rapper, bad lyricist. And that reference about mexicans Mr. Sonzala referred to was racially insensitive and ignorant on your part. You obviously came into this blog with the purpose of trying to upset people so you can sit back and jerk off to the thought of someone caring about what you say.

now choke on that slap nuts.

I disagree with you Eskay on the who’s doing whining thing. Go to any major websites and stuff and you’ll see the foulish that goes on in relation to this topic. Bloggers in general are not authorities, they just found a place to finally publish their shit. Believe me, I know.

D Mind, I guess it’s all relative cuz the thing I notice on the message boards I frequent is the rampant NY hating. I could post links right now to tons of anti-NY threads. as a matter of fact this very blog posting we’re going back and forth in right now is being posted on several message boards with titles like “Bun B sons blogger” and when you read through them all you see is alot of gloating from Southern rap fans.

One of my points that was never answered was, why are ya’ll so defensive towards NY? Bol isn’t even from NY but everybody automatically assumed he was after reading this post. That to me speaks volumes about who’s really mad at who.

  • D Mind

Well BXCONNECT, he’s wrong, southern fans do distinct between the best and worst. Thats another flaw, he assumes as if he knows what we think just because we havent held press conferences and went on the radio about the subject. But at the same time, what does anybody have to offer these to hip-hop hop that isnt being done anywhere else? Its basicly the same message everywhere.

  • D Mind

Well Eskay, its the same the other way around with this blog, people make threads about the south sucks and other stuff, the problem is that i made the point that yall dont want to here the other side, good points have been made by us on this blog, yet yall continue to say your peace over looking what we said as irrelavant, but we continued to answer every thing. You said it yourself while ago, you didnt see valid points being made by us, but i could have swore Doc Flav, Mikey Ess AKA SukedowN, Blood Hound aka Slum Lord, Sonny, LOS, cyde hustla, adriane, Bun B, and Southern Smoke. Yet you shrug them off as not valid. That tells me strait up that your not open to discussion cuz your not really listening to the other side. Thats real immature.

  • bxconnect

i feel you D Mind.i just think its a beautiful thing that the culture continues to expand beyond the tri state area.i used to be biased towards the south.shit i used to get into on blogs and all that shit.but you know what i have all outkast shit all ti s shit damn near all scarface shit.im waiting for killer mike who b y the way will chew up a lot of rappers anyplace.stat quo i love that old goodie mob shit.so i cant really be on some hate shit.i slep on 8 ball until somebody put me in my place and told me to check his catalog before i diss the brother and he does have a deep catalog him and mjg.but im gonna keep it real if i feel a niggas flow is wack im going to speak on it.i dont care what part of the country the nigga is from.by the way liberation is in my top 10 greatest cuts ever.in time we will ee how stupid it is to diss someon just because there from the south.because like i always say we got a bunch of cousins and aunts down there.its all love.

  • http://nahright.com eskay

D Mind, How am I not open to discussion? what do you call what we’re doing right now? I think yourself, Mikey Ess AKA SukedowN have made good points. Blood Hound aka Slum Lord is my dog, he stays on my site so he knows how I feel about all this and he knows I’m not a South hater.

I’m big enough to admit that yesterday when I said nobody had valid points I was just being emotional because of all the invalid, bullshit comments being made by alot of the other people on here. for instance:

Dr Flav frequently comments at my site and he stays saying the same type of shit like he said here:

    “yall just jelly”

come on dog, I can’t respect that. that’s the same bullshit argument. we ain’t jealous, none of us are artists so why would we be jealous? If you say Ghost is jealous for dissing D4L then that would make a little more sense. You’d be wrong of course, but at least it wouldn’t sound stupid. what would a legendary m.c. like him a member of arguably the greatest group ever assembled, have to be mad about from a bunch of clowns who didn’t even crack gold?

On another note it feels good to see the south “Stand Up”, they made a blog to intentionally offend the south and we Stood UP…I love that…

  • D Mind

Good point BXCONNECT and as far Eskay goes, yes their were comments made others on here that wasnt mature but you only recognized those and those arent in the masses compared to the ones made that were valid. But yet you used that as a crutch, im not calling you a south hater, im just calling you closed minded cuz alot of what you’ve said is closed minded cuz you continued to not recognize the other view points those people i named made made. But only recgonized yours and assumed that it must be fact. Only when you recognized that, will you understand what the people i named said in their posts.

  • http://nahright.com eskay

^ Ok, so I’m still being closed minded? I just acknowledged that a few of ya’ll had good points. I’m trying to have a dialouge here but I’m not sure you’re on the same page homey.

  • D Mind

What points have you recognized besides maybe one of mine? Or besides admitting you said no one was making any good points yesterday. Name a few and who are the people who made them.

What about houston, New Orleans, Memphis, Miami, etc… You can’t isolate a reigon by labeling it SOUTHERN HIP HOP, from my understanding Hip hop is hip hop, it doesn’t matter what part of the states you live in, hell for that matter any part of the world.”

^ both good points. However I will say that your comment at 3:33 contained alot of bullshit:

    >>we hear yall constantly bitching bout the state of hip hop and southern hip hop, mad that your coast is no longer on top.

no you hear some of us bitching. right there you’re doing the same generalizing that we’re being accused of.

    >>but you dont even support your own artists. You dont even go out and buy your own artists cd, but you want other coasts to support your artist.

why do you say that, cuz niggas don’t go platinum? so what if a million people didn’t buy a fucking cd, that doesn’t mean people aren’t supporting their artists. thats one of ya’ll favorite lines. unless you have some sales figures broken down geographically then don’t speak on what we buy and don’t buy.

furthermore who gives a fuck. I don’t want ya’ll to buy shit, I’m not a rapper, I’m a blogger. Sure, I’d like to see some of my favorite artists do big numbers, but at the end of the day if they don’t, I won’t lose sleep, believe that.

    # Mikey Ess AKA SukedowN Says:

P.S. Pimp C is a much better rapper than most any of those selling a million or more in the south now and then. Listen to Dirty Money then talk speak your piece on him.

Blood Hound aka Slum Lord Says:
    April 3rd, 2006 at 3:17 pm

    Sonny Says:
    April 3rd, 2006 at 3:55 pm

    # sonny Says:

as far as writing about the same topics, have you heard any eastcoast rap lately? no? well i’ll tell you what they’re rapping about. CRACK, PIMPING AND MURDER. the game period is fucked up. everyone everywhere is talking about the same thing.

You know, I read your personal blog outside of this from time to time. This is HANDS DOWN, the dumbest post I’ve ever read from you. Personally, I’m disappointed. I’ve heard all the arguments and discussions about the quailty of southern hip hop or to quote the great Pimp C, “country rap tunes”. It’s been simmering for a while now, it just took “Laffy Taffy” to give all the self rightous East Coast critics some ammo. Since artists like Outkast (debut ’94), Goodie Mob(debut ’95),8ball & MJG (debut ’93) and Scarface (solo debut ’91)have been putting out music on par or better than anybody anywhere else. They all just happen to be from the South. I really don’t see any difference between “Laffy Taffy” and “Lean Back”, “In the Club” or Ja Rule’s whole catalogue (where that nigga from again?) As far as Pimp’s personal situation, that man served his time. And how does one Black man wish MORE jail time on another, even in jest. I’m starting to figure this thing out. Controversy sells don’t it brah. It also can lead to real life drama (R.I.P 2pac, Biggie and all the other fallen MC’s) You are a talented writer, you don’t need the cheap bull shit. I dont agree with the whole of the above blog. But he has a point!!
Firstly i’m not taking anything away from the older southern rappers, i got a lot of repect for OutKast & Scarface. But the problem with hip hop today is a lot bigger than just the south.
I hate most new albums that come out these days, even Ghostface new one is average. The sooner all(South, east west) cats get back to there roots there is not going to be any hip hop left it’ll be straight up RnB shit.

The main people who talk down about Southern rap are the east coast elitists who are convinced that any music orinigating from below them or to the left of them is garbage. I feel correct in saying this because I’m engaged to a dude straight from Brooklyn and I’m from Texas. He disses my music constantly with no valid points to back it up. A few fads like D4L or “snap music” don’t define a whole region. Next year nobody will probably even remember those groups, but you have people like UGK who have been standing for over a decade. If anything, other regions need to take notes about how we do it down here. We support our artists without major record labels or large fan bases. A southern artist can sell thousands of CD’s and sell out concerts in his own region without any other support. They don’t cry about label politics, and payola or anything else. Our artists GRIND because they had no choice when nobody outside of the south was checking for them.

The south has been ignored by the media, radio, bet and mtv, and the magazines for years and now that the “machine” is exploiting/supporting the South ppl, mainly NY critics and yes “backpackers” or “purists” are getting upset.

You said Southern fans make “no distinction between the best and the worst their particular segment of the hip-hop community”. That cannot be further from the truth, problem is people who call themselves critics seem to be the most confused. In the South we have songs like Laffy Taffy and songs from Ying Yang twins and Luke to serve a purpose. That purpose is to make women shake their ass at the club, clubbin’, bass music, and having a good time is element of growing up in the South. That being said NOT ONE sane person would dare not draw a line between “Laffy Taffy” and “The Art of Story Telling” by Outkast. Its the critics and honestly people outside of the South, who never been below the Mason Dixon line who think Southerners view Outkast and other true lyrcist with D4L.

You are comparing apples to oranges. Back in the 80′s Kid N Play wasn’t compared to Kool G Rap or KRS1, so why compare D4L to other Southern artist, just cause they are from the same region?

In case you haven’t notices this is a capalistic society, so all your “backpack” buddies are trading in their integrity to make $$$$$$. Keep it real if you want to!

In my mind, Lil’ Wayne > UGK.

i respect UGK for holding it down for years when NO ONE was checking for the south, but its not my cup of tea.

i would say most hip-hop heads find southern rap to be amusing -if not something they would listen to on a regular basis…

But entertainment and talent are not the same thing, and a lot of cats in the south don’t seem to be willing to admit that..

I mean, I like Dipset -but you won’t catch me claiming that they have talnet.

  • the Landlord

Dont think because a NY artist gives BunB, T.I., Jeezy, or any of these other bamma-hop artist a chance to spit 16 on their shit(ie., Big Pimping), that its because southern mc’s are suddenly so nice. NO, it’s because n.y./east coast artists are trying to reach southern markets by appealing to their limited tastes and ear for hiphop. Its marekting dummies. Just like when G.W. Bush hired Colin Powell and Condi Rice. He did it to pander to and patronize the minority voters, not because he thought they would be great employees. BunB your argument was heartfelt, but you name dropping all these artists that big-up your shit holds no weight. If you in the game , you should know, niggas will tell you anything to get in your pocket. Wake up southern brothers, we need you for the oncoming revolution, shit is getting too real

  • alchemist

    >Southern rap fans, meanwhile, make it a point to draw no distinction between the best and the worst their particular segment of the hip-hop community has to offer.

    Not entirely true.

I understand what you’re saying, though. Given the recent popularity of southern-based rap, supporters can’t lean on the “the south don’t get no respect” line anymore. Southern-based rap has come a long way from 2 Live Crew.

    >NO, it’s because n.y./east coast artists are trying to reach southern markets by appealing to their limited tastes and ear for hiphop.

“Limited tastes and ear for hiphop.” That’s the silliest thing I’ve ever read in my life.

i thought we both agreed that you soap box speech was not meant for this forum. The point “Bun B” was making is that you never heard the southern region complain about anyone that came out of the east. We all supported them, but now we are not getting the same in return. He also dropped those names to show that the real life blood of hip hop support each other…while the fools on here who are (self admitted) not in the music industry at all but seem to want to be critics. We are talking about Music not about a race war. And if you think for one second that “Big Pimpin’” would have been as hot as it was with out Bun b and Pimp C on it, my man i know a lot of people that would dissagree.

  • http://www.nwemusiconline.com Trouble Maker

Actually a growing trend is that east coast rappers are featuring southern artists…lean back? who made that beat? and who was on the remix? Where did Mase move to and made a song about?…”I’m from the A now?” Why would puff and russell make a southern branch of there company? When Pimp C went to jail it made headlines…i just found out Black Rob went to jail. Why would the ROC try and recruit lil wayne? The truth is…no matter what you call us(landlord) and no matter what your opinion of us is(Eskay) the south is whats hot right now…in a few years another region may take the top spot, you never know. But for right now The south is in the lime light, let us enjoy it…pat us on the back and say good job…Lord forbid you enjoy some of the glory with us. But you know what, those east siders that come down here and shine with us are doing a lot better than the rest of your boys…and we still accept them with open arms…Southern Hospitality i guess.

I am not even American, since I live in Italy, so I don’t buy into the East vs South thing. The only thing that matter for me is dopeness. UGK are dope, Luda is dope, some other southern artists are not dope. But so are some NY rappers.
As far as my music taste, I prefer sample-heavy beats to keyboard beats. That means, for example, I don’t like Swizz Beats or The Neptunes (who are associated to East Coast rappers as well).
The “simplification” of hip hop music is a problem, but it has nothing to do with the South in particular…

@troublemaker……lil’ wayne IS nice. And he’s nice because he obviously has been studying Hova, Beans, and Freeway(ROC in general), and he stepped his game up. Cant you tell? Mase moving to ATL is irrelevant, who but him knows why. He sure didnt go because southern hip-hop called him(i believe it was supposed to be Jesus). Scott storch made lean back, so what…the answer to most of your other inquiries is simple…MONEY…Label execs know there is a sucker born every minute.. It just seems that there are more born south of virginia than anywhere else…and im sure they’re not born that way, but the politics and the education options in the south are so preprogrammed and limited that unfortunately SOME(not all) of our southern brothers and sisters miss out. As far as my “soapbox speeches”, there is nowhere that the truth is not welcome. By the way ,Big Pimpin is on Hova’s album and is Hova (and Timbaland’s) hit, and it would have been even better without UGK..”My brother”, just cause people south of ohio say ugk are legends, it doesnt make them legends to everyone. Finally, everything is about race, even though in this thread i dont believe i was making an issue of race, but if i did,…then yes, fuck whitey…because at the end of the day, this country was built on and thrives off of racial inequities..Or do you have knowledge and overstanding…or are you just a devil too?…….step your wisdom up B

I find it amusing how many of you people act like the quality of music from the south must be better due to the fact that it sells more, well according to that rationale Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer and 50 Cent must be among the greatest mc’s of all time, but anyways I enjoy some southern acts (Geto Boys, UGK, Outkast, Scarface, Eightball & MJG, Chamillionaire, amongst others) but I do feel that although there is crap music out of every region that the worst of the worst tend to be southern acts, for example: Fabolous and Juelz Santana suck but D4L and Dem Franchise Boys are astronomically worse, alot of the production I hear out of the south is garbage as well, shitty synth sounds played out in a way that can never be considered an actual good musical composition (atleast by any music expert) accompanied by equally worse rhymes about rims and jewelery, amongst other cliche, overdone song concepts, albeit I do enjoy raps about materialistic things, even greats such as Big Daddy Kane rapped about materialistic things but when it gets to the point where artists are writing whole songs about the shiny rims on their car or all the jewelery they wear that’s when it gets out of hand, I mean for christsake Dem Franchise Boys made a whole song about white t-shirts, anyways I respect alot of artists out the south, I just feel you guys need to step your game up, as does every region at this point but especially the south.

What’s funny to me is, there are things that we take out the time to discuss and we suppose that we are trying to find a way to enlighten others. When at the end of the day, our children still suffer from miseducation, banks still get over on the poor, and we fight over blocks and hoods that we can’t possibly even afford the mortgage on or much less even figure out a way to buy them up.

you know if i had a problem with the way thigs works i would do something about it. Not critique the music of a region and blame their success on ignorance. What makes a legend? i believe that endurance and quality of music is a good place to start. and your misguided if you think that Bun B is not a legend, but actually it doesn’t matter Because UGK is great weither a racially motivated muslum from the east now living in the carolinas thinks they are or not, Just like Eight ball& MJG. I like your firey disposition though…you should really be heading some kind of movment or march or something…but your right it is all about the money…and at this point in the game we are bringing in more of it… in time another region may take the top spot and all of this meaningless chatter will be forgotten…and cats from that region will be here going back and forth with cats just like you.

  • Smiz…

Aiyo folk…why are u singling the South out?? The rap game sucks period…IN ALL REGIONS…and the East may be the worst because THEY are the originators…yet have some of the wackest shyt out right now. NYC & the East, shyt…that’s why I fell in love with hop. Many down here love true hip hop. My fav producers are Pete Rock, Madlib, Jaydee, Primo & Organized Noize. Unfortunately, right now most of the lame shyt coming out is from the South…granted. What’s even more lame though are the cats from “up top” that switched out and started ryming on these Southern style beats…(eg. Jigga & crew, Fat Joe, Puffy & crew, Ja Rule, Busta, Kamron). Not to mention all them wack azz cats like 50 cent & all of G Unit, DMX, etc. What I USED TO ADMIRE about the East coast was that they were like, “fcuk it…this is how we do it, cause it started here…we are the pioneers.” The East actually KNOWS BETTER…so in a sense, I think deep down they are clowning us down here due to the loot being made. Back in 95-97 when Puffy was fukcing hiphop up and making it all flossy & jiggy…it was NYC that was shytty and had cats like Jermaine Dupri copying that style. Puffy started the downward spiral…and Master P put gas on the flames. Before that, Outkast & Goodie Mo had come on the scene with real instrumentation in their sound…and SPIT that the East Coast had to recognize. They forced cats to step their game up AND turned ears to better artists that may have not gotten chance like 8ball & MJG, UGK, Scarface, etc.

Unfortunately, Master P and all that WACK SHYT blew and so went the creativity…Puffy & Master P made the rap game a hustle rather than for the love. That’s why the Francize Boys and groups like that exist…they are all hustling. Just as Fat Joe, Busta, Jigga, etc from the East are doing…they all dumbed their shyt down to make $$$ and are all of a sudden cool with southern mcees…get the Fcuk outta here.

It’s like this…I may not like your style, but I respect ANY ARTIST that loves music and is SERIOUS in trying to put out a good product. That’s why I at least respect some cats in the game…even though I don’t like it. I want the East to start to do YOUR thang…be you. Gang Starr, Mos Def, Talib, MOP, DITC, Nas (when he wants to be), Jay Z (when he wants to be), The Roots, Bahamadia, Black moon, Masta Ase, KRS, Wutang, Jadakiss…lets take it back to when you got jumped for biting…when mcees could spit, deejaying. Jigga & Nas could have a big influence if they stepped up their games…for they sell.

Also…rap in the South has always been about the knock in the ride…lyrics were secondary. That’s why Miami Bass was big…everybody at the crib knre that 2 Live Crew weren’t Rakim & Kane…lol. It was Party music. The crunk shyt is just an extension of that. UNFORTUNATELY…Master P sold…and the sound here now is mainsteam.

ALL HIP HOP IS WACK RIGHT NOW…not just the South…they are the ones selling right now. I will, however, admit that music has never been worse than it is right now. I respect your opinion though…sometimes cats need to look at themselves in the mirror ojectively. This stuff now aint good for our seeds…and the ESTABLISHMENT Knows this…notice that the more ignorant shyt is…the more it sells. I’m a cat from the South that loves the underground…born in Fla & now in ATL

You dissed the man’s long time friend for no apparent reason. Yes, you are entitled to your opinion; however we are also entitled to call your opinion garbage. You were not at the mall, so you really do not 100% know what happened with Pimp C that day. We all know how the judicial system down south is a hundred years behind. You saying that he should go back to jail is out of line. Wishing that a man should go back to jail after he served his years is just wrong. You probably wrote that for controversy, and I really do not believe you would tell him or anyone close to him that he should go back. Then on your second response, you shoot even more slugs at the man by calling him an asshole, for example. Pimp C did his time and now he is out, so deal with it.

Let the truth be told…South Rap is still making money….while other cats or the ones doing the “BITCHIN” ….LOL

  • what the fuck!!!

First off Southern Rap isnt even rap or hip hop!!! Because to make rap or hip hop you need talent. Here is a little history lesson for you herbs. Rap started in the SOUTH BRONX, which is the most densely populated crime ridden urban part of this country. The south is country, slow, and hick. There for southern rap is country, slow and hick. If I lived in a trailer park in Atlanta or something I could probly relate to it. Rap is definatly not ment to be spit with a country accent, it just sounds retarted….

Who ever said lil wayne could beat any east coast mc is completly fucking braindead! Even our underground MCs would destroy his country bumkin ass. Immortal Technique, Papoose, Mos Def(not underground). Yo, my roomate is from the south and even he says all the CRUNK shit is WACK!

Southern rappers should try doing country music.

PS-I’m not from NYC, oohhhh bet everyone is real mad!?!?!?!

Personally I was offended & angered by every word in
Byron “Uncle Tom” Crawfords blog. It really gets under
my fuckin skin that this ignorance can go on, on such
a reputable sight as XXL’S. It just shows you how small
minded these self labled hip-hop intellectuals can be.

They sit behind their cozy lil desks criticizing a whole culture
& way of life while hiding behind the net like a lil ol broad. I
came up with nothin never had shit & this southern rap shit
is feedin my family. Due to this music I was able to start a
independant record store & feed my lil man & make myself
& fam financially stable/& more then, in tha process. This
is our lives we live & breathe this real shit down here, cause
most us aint never had shit. So we do it on our own & become
rich with no major label help unlike in NY where theres a major
on every other corner. It’s obvious that this man has not heard even a quarter of tha music we have to offer. This nigga is not
a man in my eyes he is somthin much less than a man he is a
    “UNCLE TOM”!!!!

In 100% honesty I would like to check up this nigga in a parkin
lot square off with em & see who tha real man is he might be able
to pop shit over tha net but I guarantee he wouldn’t wanna see
me with his hands in tha middle of a street!!!

I actually think that every fan base has their ups and downs. I mean it’s hard to say that we are not being discriminated against when everytime you turn around, a NY east coast rapper has something to say about how they are “here to bring NY back to the top and dislike southern rap” “it’s all about the east coast” etc etc,
I feel like if you’re in the backseat, stay in the backseat, when it’s your turn to drive, drive how you want to drive. I mean everyone is a critic, but how many of the critics can put on the other shoe. Last to wish that a man go back to jail is pretty much “out of line”,but everyone has their opinions.

  • Jeremy

This has to be one of the worst articles that I have ever read. For the person wirting this, nobody knows you!! You right at XXL and at XXL you favor studio rappers like 50 Cent. How can you sit up there and say that Southern Music is pulling Hip-Hop back and nobody from the East Coast had a hit record since Jay-Z retired? The South is more than just snap-music and club songs and you would know that if you went from Houston to Memphis to Atlanta and asked around, but you wouldn’t do that because you only write things out of the comfort of an office in New York. I know what you going to say “You never going to Houston”, and you can front on the net, but the real reason that you won’t go to Houston is because you wouldn’t be allowed, just like 50 Cent ain’t allowed in Houston!

  • http://www.wordofsouth.com/myblock B. E. Davis-Hart

I’m a hip-hop fan who has felt for years that all coasts have weak MC’s who follow the same hoes/money/cars/jewelry formula therefore pimping themselves in negative ways that make not only the hip-hop culture look bad but make the Black race look bad as a whole. Southern rap has its share of the weak acts who hit the mainstream and sell units out the stratosphere for having danceable beats and below average juvenile lyrics and they can’t call themselves artists much less call themselves lyricists because of their mentality. Southern rap has been in the mainstream but in a pop rap form, the realest lyricists on every coast are in the underground signed or unsigned. The realest lyricists never hit TRL, because they aspire to have real fans that don’t love them only for club friendly songs, the South has a long history of being the cradle of ignorance and while I don’t buy any of the mainstream South artists’ music I feel that the South needs to get serious if the reign is to last as long as it has. I’m from Birmingham, Alabama, one of the last places you would expect to find a rap scene much less rap artists, and some are aight, some could be better but all in all it is a city that should be obvious with its scene the way Atlanta is always in the spotlight no matter how crappy their artists are. The biggest issue I have with the South is the blatant bad representation with artists like D4L and the “snap music” movement that they and DFB popularized for what will hopefully be like a trend that doesn’t last but as long as ignorant music buyers give away their money to support that bullshit, will last. While we know that there is nothing new under the sun at the same time artists in the South need to move away from the conventional and expected content that people have come to expect for so long and seem to love with an unwaving passion for all things stupid, from grills to slurred dialect, further reinforcing the already true belief that the South is backwards. The real is the South is mentally enslaving itself, the majority people see in the mainstream, even if they say they are “keeping it real,” as we know the essence of hip-hop is what you know from your perspective but also know how to broaden your horizons if you strive to change the game for the better not for worse. I’m a Southerner who has an open mind to the point where I’m influenced to create hip-hop by other styles of music, like classical, jazz, soul, gospel, to name a few styles I dig as hip-hop is about experimentation and not being afraid to do so. The realest South artists along with UGK and Scarface are the South Park Coalition who rep Houston in a real way and are also the definition of underground in a real way. But these magazine people wouldn’t know that because they are too into the mainstream brainwashing to see that. I’m going to give the South a few more club crunk hits and see if it doesn’t fall from there if more real MCs and lyricists aren’t seen and heard, while the game is ever changing and while it is supposed to it would be ill if more lyricists made a conscious effort to step their flow and content game up because it matters more than how shiny one’s ice is and how costly a grill is. Words of wisdom last more than words of inanity.

Holy shit! I don’t even know where to begin with this one. Have you EVER been outside of New York? Hip Hop was founded in NY thirty years ago, but it’s been kept alive financially by other regions who have just as much right to it. Your small minded comments, especially on the site of a national magazine that makes a grip of money from artists who aren’t “back pack,” is appalling.

I, too, enjoy back pack music. I also enjoy southern rap. In fact, a few years ago I packed up and headed for the south because I felt the southern artists had a better understanding of the BUSINESS of hip hop (NY artists tend to ask me how to get a deal; artists outside of NY tend to ask how they can sell more CDs on their own–no confusing where my bias lays).

As a “journalist,” you are certainly entitiled to your opinion, but when you try to pass off your own bias as fact, that’s where you let down the entire hip hop community–back packers and southern rappers alike. I’m embarrassed to be in the same industry as you right now. You may as well have said that Black people no longer are discriminated against so they can stop their bitching. It would have been just as wrong and would have set folks back as far as your comments have. Congratulations on showing your ass…

First off – I’m a big fan of East Coast Hip-Hop… all Hip-Hop for that matter. I grew up listening to mostly WuTang / UGK & Cypress Hill (in no particular order) & always seen all three groups as Real Hip Hop. Only, UGK was the closest to what was going on in my life. UGK sparks emotions. To me, its not about how many words one knows – i never use a dictionary or a thesaurus to write my rimes – that would be “Not Keeping It Real” to me. It’s about relating to your audience, to your people. if we rapped like the east coast or like the west coast or the east then we’d be accused of not being original. one thing you can’t deny the south is that we are Original.

My Pops always tells me “The world is full of hate – Regardless of what you do in life, people will always try to kick you down – or tell you “you aint as good as you think you are” – at first i use to think that it might have been bitterness – but trying to get into this rap game has proven him 100% correct.

by the way, My Pops is a hard working Immigrant Mexican who doesn’t think he’s taking back the south but only wants to be treated as a real American that has in many ways helped build this country!

So, STOP HATTIN ON THEM TEXAS BOYZ!!

Big Shout to XXL – i’ve never judged a group of individuals by one mans comments/actions – the South deserves the same!

    Holla at yo boi playboy!!

I have lived in the south for sometime now. I found the music exciting and flavorable and a breathe of fresh air from the west/east coast. But this music style does not filter up north the same way. The music is changed and disguised for the northern flava. The crunk is removed or a remix takes the crunk out. Than its played on east/west coast radio. So if you change the crunk for a particular audience you miss something. Southeren entertainners have not gotten the respect they deserve as artist. Nashville has been the home of country music forever. I have seen southern artist sturggle to get heard. Its new fresh and here to stay. The same way east/west coast did. The South Sounds is here to stay. They are grinding and shining

I might disagree with the man, but I respect his opinion. Simple as that.

to suggest to hate for xxl mag to not sell anything else or even worst…not even exist would be so over for them. i’d hate for that to happen, too.

so how bout we just stop buyin xxl? by the time they report their next quarter earnings we could have made a really big difference. in three months if nobody in tx buy dat shit and switch to don diva then we wouldn’t see it in cornerstores n 7-11′s n shit. don diva might be easier to get if da backpack boyz were off da shelf anyway.

The problem with this whole thing is this…We make all different kinds of music in The South. We take some seriously and others we know is strictly to have a good time wit. We come straight from the musical roots. New Orleans, Memphis, Nashville the Music City. I mean the masses speak and they feel that we enjoy our music and aint tryin to hate on East Coast music i got much love for any good hip hop. If you dont like our music dont listen and especially dont hate. Its that simple

  • silencer

Man you cats are takin this music too seriously. Music, including Hip Hop is just an art form, and art is made for beauty and entertainment. Thats all, BEAUTY and ENTERTAINMENT. Its not a functional resource. I understand that hip hop primarily originated as a means to raise awareness for what was occuring in poverty stricken urban America. That was almost 40 years ago now. The awareness has been raised and little action has been taken, aside from bandages, and government programs aimed at mitigating the voices of the oppressed. And excluding the few individuals who have overcome those adverse circumstances to succeed in Hip Hop. Those individuals who because of greed, refusal to take responsibility, and wanton disregard for the welfare of the black community as a whole, continue to denigrate and contribute to the demise of young black men and women. That said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder; so just because one segment of the population does not like another segments style of hip hop, does not make either of the styles of music any less respectable/validated. Furthermore, there is a blatant disconnect in priorities when we as hip hop fans are complaining about the content of any music not having substance. Who cares if it has substance or not. It is not the job of artists to provide stimulate our brains and impart knowledge onto us. I cannot think of any other genre of music whose fans listen to it to become educated or enlightened. Every other form of music allows its artist thier creative license despite how terrible the music may sound to any ONE person.
Education should not be the purpose of rap/hip hop music or any music. Why are we looking to rappers or any artist for that matter for education, enlightenment, and an exchange of ideas etc. Even if every artist had the lyrical prowess of Nas, Jay-z, Pac, etc. So what?.. What has talking ever gotten accomplished. Thats whats wrong with youth today, they look to hip hop and music for all of their ideas, and world events. Everything is contingent on what some money hungry rapper says… And believe me I got love for almost all artists, even those that I don’t like because I have respect for what they do and their right to express themselves however they choose to. Thats all, and no more. Jay-z isn’t my favorite artist because he is some cerebral god. He’s simply entertaining, and he’s great at THAT. He’s not my source of enlightenment, he’s not who I depend on to tell me whats going on in the world today, he’s simply great entertainment. If you want to hear something of substance go rent a book on tape or somethin and listen to that. Or if you want to be provoked to contemplate current events, go read a newspaper for YOURSELF. Stop relying on some money driven, image driven, media icon/rap star to serve you all your thoughts on a plate. Find out whats happening in the world for yourself, develop your own perspective on it, and for God’s sake: Do something other than just sit around Rapping/or talking about it. Make it happen.

The rap game has become a destructive machine, and its our which dollars grease its gears.

i will admit theres more talented artists i would like see obtain there 15 minutes of fame from the south artists/groups such as “K-Rino”, Point Blank, Klondike Kat, Z-Ro, Trae, E.S.G., Street Military, Guerilla Maab pretty much nearly every artists with south park coalition/killa klan/screwed up click affiliation has a valid point to be heard because them groups consist of some of the greatest hip hop/rap artists to ever graze the genre & have been grinding it out in the underground since hip hop/rap was established but do you hear there names mentioned ever? U.G.K. is a legendary group you have no grounds to mention there name in a sentence unless its out of respect the south has generated some of the greatest artists/groups of all time you just have failed to recognize it because you follow the suit of another mans words you base your opinion on circulated opinion of course people are going to react in a angered manner you brought that reaction upon yourself with your comments of stupidity “K-Rino is 1 of the greatest lyricists of all time” & for over 20 years has dropped album after album not once puting out something wack he gets no credit yet mediocore at best east coast artists like fabulous get there 15 in the lime light there was a moment beanie segal was like the truth through out this entire buzz of hip hop after the death of pac & big there has been more talented artists in the south with twice the vocabulary of your saviours we can even take it to the west coast what about X-Raided? C-Bo? Yukmouth? what about midwest artists/groups such as Twista? Do or Die? face it some of the greatest artists to ever graze the genre from any region has been down played out of all i named seriously only 2 has had the oppurtunity to be heard on a high scale that being twista & do or die but still as talented as they are how long did there buzz carry on for we all know there talented but yet nobody supports them but when twista does a song with the east coast beloved kanye west all the sudden he earns his respect and his albums start flying off the shelf umm he had the talent long before he hooked up and did a song with kanye west the industry of hip hop/rap has long been tainted and it didnt begin with the rise of the south if you want to try to break down the downfall of rap/hip hop you seriously need to begin else where starting off with placing this blame on the likes of U.G.K. is seriously an ignorant page header

and before i get ridaculed yes i know kanye west is from chicago but still hes more like the east coasts wicked step child than a native of chicago

It is blatant ignorance and disrespect to an entire region that has been and always be known as a cradle of ignorance and a great majority of us have the nerve to degrade ourselves and revel in it by rapping about materialism, women, men, money, cars, jewelry, all the things that are cliches in hip-hop and have been for a long period of time. Aside from that there are some pioneers in the South that should be respected whether you dig their music or not: Outkast, Scarface and of course UGK. People forget that the South has been an unknown territory for years in hip-hop because when hip-hop began on the East Coast in the Bronx in NY, the sounds were relevant to only that region, people forget that the beautiful thing about hip-hop is every coasts get its shine no matter how real, fake, ill or mundane their artists are and people are mad that a place like the South is running hip-hop commercially if not artistically, the latter which is downhill when you analyze the mainstream South acts that are getting airplay, mostly from club hits with bangin beats and the usual subject matter. I’m a hip-hop fan who practices selective perception and cognitive dissonance, two terms ALL REAL JOURNALISTS should KNOW and APPLY, whether in writing articles or analyzing whatever is happening in your daily lives. The real issue in hip-hop bigger than hating entire coasts is the mental slavery the majority of artists on all coasts are engaging in: Still calling themselves the “N” word, glorifying criminal activity, which furthers the fact the hip-hop is from the street, women debasing themselves as “hoes,” “bitches,” with no thought as to how it affects how other races see Blacks in general. Hip-hop is still an artform to believe in with the anti-mainstream sentiment of the indie/underground scene but it’s not without heads thinking it’s the domain of backpackers. I’m from Birmingham, Alabama, a place more known for the infamous Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombings and Civil Rights than for people “bombing” trains with spray paint in the form of graffiti art. It is one of the last places you would think hip-hop and MC’s and every other important element. This is a city that would feel proud if it were known for hip-hop the way the ATL is as if GA is the only state running music period, but no journalist is bitching about that are they? I know there is and will be more to hip-hop than ass shaking, bottle popping and club tearing up and snap music and trap music, but some people are too blind to expose themselves to other styles of music. I’m a huge but discriminating hip-hop fan, I dig all coasts and styles except for gangsta rap and pop rap. I’m into artists who aren’t scared to cross pollinate sounds and be experimental and who choose not have a formula to their style. Anything that shows true artistry can sell in hip-hop, as Kanye is a perfect example, but most heads feel all that sells is the usual my rims and all that bullshit, which is true as fans embrace it given their mentality. For those who want the intelligent South, if you have talent and a passion for this culture, get out there and make a change for the better not worse.

man the problem is with any type of music the media tends to capture the queer or fag groups or bands and exploit them. hell look at rock today only thing you hear is faggot emo shit. while the true good ones are undiscovered or get little to no play. being from the south i never felt like southern rappers where bitching. plus it comes in bursts it was west at first then east then south now and id say midwest next. but every area has stupid music with bitching involved. 50 cent which is new yorks hallowed savior turned all these 6 yr olds walkin around acting like they are gangster and fifty did nothing but citch about people hating him cause he has money or he got shot and didnt die. it is sad that shitty groups are gettin play but that happens with every genre so stfu faggots and listen to good music instead of the radio and bet and mtv

Damn fool you must have gotten up on the southside of your bed or something byron. What does it matter to you? if you dont like it dont buy it or listen to it. I know you gotta write about something to get your lil paycheck, but at the end of the day people from the south could give a fuck about your opinion we make a living of this music shit down here on some street shit, and fuck a laffy taffy, but i bet ya bitch like to shake that ass to it though huh??? hahahah thats cuz its fo the bitches ,and on some real shit dont fuck wit the pimp or bun-b, you must be crazy you now how us Texas boys get down, dont fuck around and try to interview anyone from Texas ever again you might get smacked the fuck up. Sorry the east dont got no love right now, maybe you can write an article about Jay-Z to stir up some controversey and make the man come back to give NY a lil swagger in the game, tell DMX to lay off the crack and tell cam to step his game up wit all that huey looey pooey pooey dooey dooey, til then keep my niggaz dick out ya big ol mouth. Cyr so you know who said it.

“I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the true most annoying group of fans in hip-hop (other than, of course, women) are fans of southern hip-hop.” Being a woman and from the south the only thing I can do is laugh @ it & give my view.
Mainstream hip-hop has always been about the fade once it was about drug dealing, then everything was about being a gangsta, now it’s about having fun. It’ll change again. You can’t judge an artist by where they’re from but on the artsit and actual talent. Because for ever crapy rapper like Mike Jones we have a talented one like B.G or Outkast. Just like for ever 50 cent the East has someone like Juelz Santanna or DMx(the old one). A vast majority of Southern rappers can go 16 bars with niggas from all over the country. Yeah some artists or songs from the South or shity D4L and Laffy Taffy being one of them but hell they got artist from the East and West coasts that are shity too look at 50 cent, tony yayo and xzibit. Hip-hop started off as telling a story and Hip-hop in general ain’t doing that any more. You can’t just pick out one region to bad mouth. The whole hip-hop community needs to step up their game. Half the rappers in the game need to sit they asses down (from all over). The whole industry needs to step up their lyrical game. East, West, and South included.

  • carolina boy

The only problem I have with this article is that a nigga is talking bad about a regions style of music if u dont like it dont listen to it. dont insult one regions brand of rap. And for him or her to say pimp c cant rap think about what you are saying, pimp c is to the south as what cube and easy are to the west. Thats like saying yeah that nigga easy was wack dre wrote all his lyrics. But truthfuly niggas down here making money feeding they family and doing what they love selling our own brand of hip hop. just like the east was on that real grimy tip in the early nineties and the west was c walkin and crippin it. well the south is leaning, rockin, and snappin so whats the difference.

They got alot of rappers from the south that can rhyme!! Not everybody is Crunk that’s an ATL style just like the South ain’t all Screwed & Chopped. It just proves somebody’s ignorance to judge someone because of where they’re from and not on what they’ve done. All Star is from the Nashville and he can rhyme. Soulja Slim was from the south and he could rhyme. So don’t say the South’s shit and real hip-hop because it ain’t just one catagory.

I’m from Texas so I really don’t appreciate everybody talkin down on our artist. The thing people fail to realize is that artist put what’s hot, if today’s generation is stuck on “snap music” they’re gonna put that out to make money. Hip Hop/Rap has turned into dollars and sense(cents, if you have sense then you will go for the dollars. I’m sorry but down in the south we like music with base and bounce, that’s all you hear in the clubs. Not saying that we don’t jam Common and Talib Kweli, but music sales are based on the majority, and right now 15yrs-30yrs are the majority. Just because you don’t understand it doesn’t make it bad it just means you don’t get the basics. If you listen to any underground music from Mike Jones, slim thugg, Z-Ro, and all the other Houston artist then you’ll realize that they’re music has changed a little to commerical. When you’re trying to make it you put out the real, then once you’re there you have toprovide for the masses and not just your local fan base. If anyone is mad about today’s music, then look around you and yell at those who request it on the radio and television and once it hits the airwaves it spreads like a virus. I’ll admit the D4L and Franchize are puttin out these crazy songs but the people go crazy in the club and they’re highly requested and breaking downloading records all because PEOPLE want to hear them. Once hip hoppers get old they always start hatin on the newest trend insted of just realizing that rap is a recycling effect. None of these rappers are doing anything different then what Master P did in the 90′s. He had the “ghetto stories”, the booty music, the music that made no sense, and the music that made you think about some shit. Its basiclly a game of survival of the fittest, either you keeps up with the trends or move around.

  • a-townni99a

fuck the haters….the south kicked down the fuckin door and the haters mad about it. hatin ass niggas like bol probably wake up hating and dick rides while he’s brushing his teeth. some nigga from the south probably fucked bols bitch, while listening to ugks -”left it wet for you”….and his little sisters ‘snot nosed ass’ probably slept in a free pimp-c shirt every night. either join the southern movement or get moved.

  • BigJFromDaFLA

I see this a lot. People hatin on southern hip hop because it’s not as lyrically complicated as east coast hip hop. First of all the generalization that all southern rappers are bad lyricists is just a stereotype, like saying all east coast rappers are good lyricists (look at 50 Cent or almost anyone else in G-Unit for proof of my point). Honestly I don’t really like the majority of what’s popular in the south right now, but I also don’t like most of what’s popular anywhere else. Dipset, Nelly, D4L, it all sucks. But some people like that kinda stuff. And I can respect the artists, if not on a “you got skills” level then at least I can say they gettin their money. Being from Florida (which I don’t really consider part of the “south” as it’s currently represented in hip hop) I’m on the outside looking in with the whole situation. And without bias I can say that I prefer the best of NY over the best of the south in general. You’re more likely to hear me bumpin some Ghostface or Papoose than Bun B or some crunk club shit. That’s not to say I don’t like some southern rappers better than other NY rappers. For instance Lil’ Wayne and Chamillionaire are two of my favorite emcees hailing from any coast or region. It’s all about preference. Basically it comes down to this; Southern hip hop gets underrated way too much by people who only look at the club joints and the mainstream, when really there are a lot of great lyricists in the south. But who cares. Let this clown say what he wants. It’s his opinion and twisted facts, however flawed they may be.

East Coast rappers need to get there heads out of there asses and realize the south is holding down not only with rap but also money wise. I am just tired of all these dumb ass hip hop police trying to say whats real hip hop. To me after Jay Z and Nas the south is holding it down. I am tired of everyone saying 50 cent this 50 cent that. He needs to stop snitching. So say what you want about the South, just understand who has the crown. And the East Coast is frustrated because Biggy was a one time deal. Stop crying.

If you’re not from the South you really can’t speak on our culture and how we live here. Is this gonna turn into another “this region” versus “that region” bull? Seems like we playin right into COINTELPRO in mufukin’ 2006. Their’s good and wack music coming out of EVERRRYWHERE!
Corporations just found another coast to exploit until sales balance out and then they’ll find another coast, maybe the northwest or sum shit like that, to suck the life out of. Sales is the bottom line, and it’s much easier to rap shit in a gold package than the other way around…

  • BZ

I don’t give a fuck where you are from. Some of my favs are from the south and I’m from the south. Having said that, most stuff from the south is coattail ridin’ garbage. Its boring and repetitive and doesn’t really take that much skill.

I like rappers that can write lyrics that set them apart and can spit hot flows over nice beats. period.

I don’t care if you can sell a ton of units to the mindless masses (white suburban tween girls) or get some play on some wack ass commerical station. I mean, more power to you for getting paid, but that shit doesn’t impress me at all.

All sorts of wack rappers have gotten paid and a slew of serious talent hasn’t.

If anyone is bitching its the NY dude’s. Every interview or mixtaped song all I hear is lets bring the east back, bring back new york. All this whining and bitching. Thats where the fans of southern music start to speak up. Were not going to just sit back and let you dog us. Obiviously this stupid idiot has not listened to UGK. That being said, I don’t like D4l but I do jam to DFB. Their is nothing wrong with bobbing your head to a catchy phrase or song. I can go on for days about the real mc’s down here but your ignorant azz should know them already.

“I’m going to go out on a limb here and suggest that the true most annoying group of fans in hip-hop (other than, of course, women) are fans of southern hip-hop.”

You dont know how rght you are!!! If you’ve lived in florida as long as i did, you’d know. Basically, i’m not even allowed to bump my new york music without some fucking ass telling me that shit is garbage, and telling me to listen to some TI garbage i dont want to listen to.

  • http://www.wekrankup.com Richard D. Dynamyte

For starters lets just say that the biased of east coast rappers toward southern rappers is a direct reflection of how the capetrbaggers/yankess (northern white folks) felt about southern white folks. Northerners always felt like they are more educated and have more common sense that us southerns. Well if thats how yall feel (yes I said yall) keep ya ass up there. Leave lush southern properties, historically black colleges and universities to us (there are a couple over the mason dixon. Outkast single handedly out sells any northern artists including ya’ll poster boy fifty, and yes we like to party so if D4L is making money that way so be it. Get ya’ll money up and find something better to do with your time like cleaning up yall own filth.

Southern rap is rooted in booty shake so laffy taffy is something that has always been like gangsta music on the left coast and lyrics in the east.Of course todays sound of southern hip-hop isnt what most of yall grew up on, but its what we were used to down here. Now its unfortunate that your dj’s and radio stations were so biased in the day that no one got play in ny unless you were from that region, so alot of yall missed out on alot of what other cities were doing. Because most east coast heads seem to feel like the music here is slow or with no substance, and granted it is, but have you ever been to freak nik when it was poppin or daytona or the kappa beach party its what we do. Now if you want lyrics check for an outkast or cee-lo or a trick daddy oh yeah trick can get deep. But the powers that be only want to promote what the south is known for and to us thats kewl cause its what we do. But dont get twisted thinking thats who we are. Cause once weve left the club and partied like its the last day. We wake in the morning asking the same question weve all asked. Why are we here?

  • Quita P

Time and time again this same nigga talk about the same shit the south!I mean let me explain the south to you.We like to party Thats were snap, crunk ,booty music comes from.and for you country dumb ass bitches there are plenty lyricists from the south .And for whoever made the commit about Lil’Wayne sayin if he went against any east coast rapper he’d lose motherfucker please. If that’s the case check most eastcoast songs or the remixes Who is on them LIL’WAYNE!Okay and for all my dirty south representers posting yo comments rep this shit to the fucking day you die.Because the south is doing the damn thang shawty!and if you don’t like us southerners is saying Fuck u and suck a dick bitches

  • http://kljafdldjslj HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I too, am against this regional, elitist attitude on music. Good music comes from all corners of the world, regardless of location you stupid fucks. That being said, LOLLLLLLLLLLLLL @ Bol being verbally raped by Bun-B. He basically pulled his pants down, bent him over, pulled his pink thong to the side, and took his manhood. No condom. if the south ain’t on top tell me who is? the west? hell no. e-40 is one of the worst rappers I’ve ever heard, that nigga sound like he vomiting when he raps. game is the only real nigga that can rap out the west and he buggin out on g-unit still and gettin butterfly tattoos. the east? cam’ron got shitted on in sales because he’s WACK, and your boy 50 is a trl rapper, and so is his whole gay unit (mobb deep can’t even push 250,000 units! haha). the east is so desperate they tryin to get jay z out retirement and callin a wack ass nigga named papoose the “future.” i’m sorry but that nigga is wack, and i’ll slap kay slay with his tinted ass glasses. seems like the best artists comin out the south-lil’ wayne, t.i., ugk, even your boy rick ross is shittin on the east with their own style. face the facts, the south runnin the game right now. but make no mistake, the midwest is on the rise, and i ain’t talkin faggot ass dudes like kanye or common, kanye wearin no shirts and showin chest hair like a damn queer, i’m sorry but that nigga the poster child for what a nigga with too much money will do, he thinks a line like “she ordered the kobe beef like shaquille o’neal” is cold, nigga that line is wack, bubble gum rappin ass nigga. i got 5 words for ya’ll-LUPE FIASCO AND RAY CASH

  • Chris M.

To make such an accusation is both bold and unsubstantiated. Southern Hip-Hop is a form of hip-hop in the same sense as any other form of music. Although we have had artists who have achieved stardom through mediocre means, every genre has its Michael Bolton’s and its Milli Vanilli’s. However to make such a statement clearly displays the biasness that you have for anything that is not of your demographical “norm” and of which portrays a lifestyle that you have yet to experience. Your comments are unfounded and a bit ridiculous because if you truly understood hip-hop, then you would know that it evolves; that the ear and feel of hip-hop changes continuously. To return to the “essence” of hip-hop, is to become stagnant and ultimately boring and recycled. Embrace the changes and evolutions of hip-hop because hip-hop is ever-changing and you can either move with it, or become a dinosaur.

  • Mr Pimp

Mann if you dont like the South then do something about it nigga, do something about it bitch ass niggaz, im tired of the fucking haters just doing all this chit chat if you dont like it then do something or are you gon still be bitching quit being a bitch and do something nigga…

  • keke

I can’t believe the the sexism in that post. Who ever wrote it just insulted fans of southern rap and women in general. I for one am just a fan of good music and to catagorize everyone in one general stereotypical statement is ignorance at its best. Real men and women respect others opinions…and someone let you write a column like that…

  • DJ Cacofonix

well to be honest about the beat, it’s tired. It was cool the first 100 or so times I heard it, but now it’s really bland to hear most music of that style. It would be alright if they were trying to say something with some meaning, but they aren’t. Reggaeton is already pretty tired, it has the same backbeat to it, watch that shyt be a fad, not a hard type of music (1-2 years tops with it’s life span). It’ll be cool the first 100 times, but then it gets tired after you heard that same beat so many times. And if u think am dissin southern rappers, am not, just the ones that sound the same. outkast is kool, they actually mix it up. it’s also not like this is confined just to the south, if there is stuff that sounds the same via carbon copy, am not gonna like it. no innovation. I look for some innovation, or something interesting in my music, if you can’t provide that, any type of music will fall. Emo rock has the same syndrome, it’s just really all the same and tired. Ah well, I guess it comes with the times.

  • DJ Cacofonix

other examples of MCs not bringing anything new to the table are all of those gangster rapper clones.

  • DJ Cacofonix

just watchout for a new age of super sampling…it’s coming…

If u ask me i say dat south hav got new talent coming up an dere music is very good to listen 2 but da east also have great artist such as PAPOOSE right about now i say south r on top but when PAPOOSE comes out with his shit east is goin to take back the crown but everywere is doing dere thing i wet to england an they got rappers ova dere dat are way betta dan ours so its jus a case of who puts out the best shit is da best

  • http://terry.johnsoninsightbb.com PROTO_J

I’m from kentucky so i see both perspectives but you are clumping together and genralizing there are plenty of legitimate rappers from the south but also alot of cliche ass bullshit but thats the case with all reigonal groups of hip hop so shut the fuck up dumbass

You young asshole don’t know shit about UGK!!!!!!!!!Name me what east coast rapper is worth playing right now. Besides NAS, JAY, Jadakiss, and B.Seigal are you serious…..You talk shit on a culture you dont know shit about. If you have not heard The Southern Way, Super Tight and Ridin Dirty dont say shit about UGK and Pimp C!!!!!Bun B is one of the greatest that ever did it. Listen to Nas and Rakim comments in a interview they did together. Like what was said, A rapper dont plant there legacy if what they say is not relivant today lyrically. Most of the artist from the east coast you dont remeber shit about them. They were for the most part one or two hit wonders. Right now please believe that UGK, OUTKAST, SCARFACE, GODDIE MOBB, GETO BOYS, and MASTER P., will never be forgotten in southern hip hop. Study the albums of those artist and compare it lyrically and meaningfully to any shit the east coast put out and you tell me whose better. Like rakim say “dis is for da listners” thats the type of MC’s these guys are…….Maybe you not one of the LISTNERS rakim spoke about…..

ALL THOUGH I FEEL AS IF EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THERE OWN OPINION IT HURTS ME TO SEE HOW EASY WE CAN BRING EACH OTHER DOWN SOOOOO QUICKLY.. I AM FROM THE SOUTH, BEAUMONT, TEXAS TO BE EXACT AND I AM A HUGE FAN OF DOWNSOUTH RAP (UGK, Z-RO AND THE LIST GOES ON AND ON) THATS ALL I KNOW DOWN HERE I AM LEARNED TO BECOME MORE VERSITILE AS FAR AS LEARNING TO LIKE ALL GENRES OF MUSIC. THIS IS AMERICA, A MELTING POT WHERE WE ARE ENTITLED TO LIKE AND PROMOTE WHAT WE WANT. I AM SO TIRED TO SEEING US BRING EACH OTHER DOWN!!!! IT NEEDS TO STOP. PEOPLE OF OTHER RACES THINK WERE A FUCKING JOKE BECAUSE WE CANT JUST STICK TOGETHER AND IF YOU DONT BELIEVE ME JUST SEARCH THE WEB. I AM A PROUD BLACK WOMAN WHO LOVES HER RACE THE ONLY THING I AM ASHAMED OF IS WHAT WE ARE DOING TO EACH OTHER. NOW THATS SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

  • Inf

    Fuck the South

  • memphis tn.

I like all hip-hop. I’m from the south.I fill hip-hop is changing because of the times,it is 2006.

  • SC Boy

Hip hop is not dead, hip hop just moved to the South like everybody up North does. Let me think back…the last time I heard this hip hop is gone, hip hop is dead shit is when the West was running shit back in the 90′s. I distinctly remember people talking trash about Dr. Dre because he sampled more than a snippet for “nuthin’ but a g thang” but then when Puffy and E. Sermon did it the next year it was all good. The point is that anytime New York is not the center of the hip hop universe all of sudden hip hop is dead. I’ve been around a long time and I remember New York giving New Jersey hell when they first hit the screen. But that’s the attitude, if its not New York it’s not right. Well, wrong. Point blank we are running shit and will continue to do so for a long time because we understand the power of unity. Something we learned down here after slavery when all of you tough up North negroes cut and run.

  • SC Boy

Yall’s champion Jay Z….81% drop in sales second week…still has not reached platinum…don’t look good for the North anytime soon….may I suggest Bike Week in the spring….can’t beat ‘em join ‘em.

  • SC Boy

Look “son” I guess you want the good ‘ol days of real hip hop when dudes was rhyming about their girlfriend’s Fendi bag or Chanel shoes…was that real hip hop to you?…I didn’t hear you bit**in’ then. Oh yeah and critically acclaimed…since when did critics decide was tight in hip hop. Problem is yall make sh** for your block or borough and the rest of the world did not grow up on your stoop. Broaden your scope and you will sell…that’s game, that you’ll be too proud to take because it came from a slow ass Southerner.

  • D

Laffy Taffy aint that bad. Those dudes didn’t come out saying that they were the best MC’s. Remember when people made hiphop songs that were fun. (redhead kingpin – even black moon) You know “fun” with a taste of realness. If I don’t like it, I won’t buy it.I am a fan of real hiphop but I ain’t too good to willy out at times. When I want good hiphop I pop in The Roots, Jay, Nas, Beans, old Tribe, old UGK, old eightball&mjg, Outkast- there is variety – you don’t have to watch 106 and Park all day or listen to the radio.

It aint no secret, the east coast doesnt like the south. Back in the day when the ghetto boys was doing shows in n.y. they got booed. BET wouldnt play ugk songs on there network.

Yo sweetheart any NY cat standing on the street corner would destroy lil wayne. He may have rhyme skill for a southerner, but could never compete up north lyrically!

Rakim, Nas, Ransom, Maino, Pap, anyone in Wu, Jigga, Redman, Buckshot, Tru life, Mobb Deep, Gang Star….

The list goes on forever, any of the above would destroy Lil boy Wayne or any other bubble gum rapper the south can produce

You see, the problem with this bit of rhetoric is the suggestion that southern hip-hop music is not being discriminated against. However the essence of your message is just that, the discrimination of southern hip-hop. What you’ve accomplished here is a disguised attack against this genre, while trying (and unsuccessfully I might add) to turn the tables and position yourself as simply an observer of what you refer to as a complete lack of discrimination.

Though written well, the message you are trying to convey is completely lost, simply because you have constructed a discriminatory essay about how such discrimination does not exist. It’s a veritable oxymoron in written form, if you will.

On to my next point. You’ve expressed that you wouldn’t lose any sleep if Pimp C were to be locked up and the key thrown away. This makes me think that you personally have never been incarcerated for any offense, which further means that you have never experienced the luxuries that our fine correctional facilities have to offer. Now I’m not condoning what Pimp C was imprisoned for, but he served what the state thought was a fair sentence. So get over it. Prison is no place for a man.

Lastly, you stated that you grew up listening to the east coast hip-hop, so you essentially know what you like. This is precisely what is wrong with the industry as a whole today. When the music ceases to evolve, than it loses its value. This is true in all forms of art, be it the written word, the visual arts, or music and performing arts. If you are only comfortable with the styles that were established on the east coast when you first began listening to hip-hop, then I have a very simple solution for you. Stop listening to the radio and just put your current music library on repeat. it will save you having to put forth the energy to criticize what you don’t understand as well as save you some money.

Game recognize game. Rep your set, but respect the rest.

P.S. I agree with you “Laffy Taffy” is an abhorrent injustice to hip-hop. But let us not forget that gem of a track “Chicken Noodle Soup” that was spawned in your back yard.

    Southern rap sucks. Period.

Whatever man. The East had there time with the rap game. But now it’s the South’s time to shine, so get over it. The torch has been passed, and it has finally been lit.

I’ll admit, southern beats are fun to dance to but it’s the lyrics that kill it. I used to be really into Satanic rap like Brotha Lynch Hung, Mr. Doctor, Sicx, Gangsta Pat. I believe lyrics have can have an effect on you spiritually. I started read The Bible (Life Application version) then I’d be out at the club A-Town stoppin’ and I’d come home feeling kidda sick (not coughing and sneezing) but like on the inside. Anyone else experience this? Just wondering…cuz the more I read the bible the less I like “Ms. New Boody” and all that bling-bling, grillz, junk. Lastly, it would be nice to have some girls that can ACTUALLY dance in some of these videos like B-boy/B-girl style. We’ve seen that booty poppy crap since Dre. Day! Its been 15 joints now, mix it up please! I’m out!

  • unklejun

I won’t get on the internet and say crazy shit like some of my Southern brethren, BUT I have to site that the South isn’t the only region putting out bullshit. Ever heard of “Chicken Noodle Soup”? Come on now, EVERYBODY knows that shit was straight TRASH. I think that most of the music out (atleast the music getting radio play in the mainstream) is setting Hip-Hop back. But I just can’t understand why GROWN ASS MEN can’t just not listen to music they don’t like instead of hating on the South. I don’t like alot of the shit coming out of the EAST and WEST coasts (I cuts for Kiss and Game though)but I ain’t blogging about the lameness of either side, nor am I blaming them for the decline in the quality of rap. Think about it, who is REALLY making good music right now?
Last point before I go on with the rest of my life. I assume that niggas on the East coast (I’m assuming that the person who wrote this is from NY or some Northeastern locale)ride around listen to West coast rappers’ music or East coast rappers’ music? Cats out West, do ya’ll ride around bumpin’ Cam’ron? “I’ll go out on a limb” and say most of you don’t. Point is, down here most of us (Texans stand up) don’t really rock none of ya’ll shit EXCLUSIVELY, but we ain’t hatin on ya’ll; we just doing what everybody else did: making our own sound. STOP SNITCHIN, STOP LYIN, and oh yeah, STOP HATIN.

ANOTHER HATER….QUIT HATIN’ ON THE SOUTH

  • Nick B

I swear east coast blacks are similar to racist white folks. You think your way is the best way and hold yourself, music, slang, and culture above everyone elses. You come down to the south and complain make statements like “we do it like this in nyc” and “they wouldn’t have that in nyc”, yatta, yatta, yatta. Nobody from the south was complaing when hip hop started in the 80s. The south wasn’t complaining when the west coast was doing their thing…east coast was though. East coast blacks are the ultimate hatters and this column proves furthers my point.

I’d like to also give my two cents about the whole “hip hop is dead” movement before is submit. Most true hip hop fans don’t consider southern rap as hip hop. To simlfy that last statement I’ll put it into an equation. Southern rap = just plain rap. East coast rap = hip hop. Most rap and hip hop fans whether cultured or not agree with this assertion. If this is a true statement then wouldn’t it be the east coast’s fault that hip hop is dead? Nevermind east coast you don’t have to answer that because I’m sure you’d just give a lame excuse like the white man is holding our music down.

I would like to apologize to the following east coast hip hoppers if I offended them :

Pete Rock, CL Smooth, Mos Def, wu tang clan, beanie segal(for real nigga i don’t want it with you), peedi crack, freeway, LL, redman, joe buddens, 50 cent, jay-z, run dmc, biggie, big daddy kane, curtis blow and a bunch of other east coast niggas.

  • Nick B

The south would have no reason to bitch if people wouldn’t bitch about our music. Our “bitching” is only a rebutal to the bitching we hear about our region and music.

    Dear Mr. Crawford

Your ingnorace toward southern hp-hip is truly stunning. You work for a hip-hop magazine, not a New York hip-hop magazine. For you to say southerners stop bitchin is out of line. We are not the ones on t.v., in magazines, on the radio chanting “hip hop is dead”. I been watching New York area rappers claiming that they feel hip hop is dying and that they are fed up with the industry. Let’s make one thing clear, there is no B.E.T., M.T.V.,X.X.L., The Source headquarters down south. If you or anybody else from the New York City area feel that hip hop is on the decline, then go to your local radio stations and protest to them. You guys didn’t have a problem when all you saw on T.V. were Mobb Deep, Nas, Jay-Z, Wu Tang Clan, etc. Did we complain? No. We sat back and watched hip-hop grow into a media monster. Now that the south has the ball everybody seems to have something to say about our music. What has the south done to deserve such much hate. If New York rappers feel that their radio stations play to much southern music then make something that appeals to your fanbase. I’m not going to touch your comments about Pimp C, I what you put in your blog, I want you to say those words to Pimp c’s face and see what king of reaction you will get. Since XXL put up your blog about southern hip hop shows me what people at the magazine think about southern hip hop, since this is the case I will no longer read XXL magazine again.

  • Fetti

This is a perfect example of another bullshit, so-called Hip-Hop purist, miseducated critic. See, I could go all out and talk that East Coast shit but I got love for true hip hop as well but what alot of you fail to realize is that old music that alot of us grew up on is gone with the times and you have to either upgrade or keep bitchin about what was. I agree that lyrical content and artistic integrity is at an all time low but that shit ain’t start in the South. Wack music was coming out of every other coast before just as much and alot of the big name artist from East/West were brickin. The South has been payin dues forever to get it’s fair due and now that we’ve been dominatin, it’s been really gettin to alot of these NY Supremecists that have no regard for anything that isn’t coming out of NYC. The truth is that there are plenty of great rappers from the South. The problem is that you’re being misinformed and judging the South from it’s mainstream artists/music. If you were a pure Hip Hopist, the first thing is you know that Hip Hop started as a grassroot movement and radio wasn’t a form of marketing so why in the hell would you try to sum up the whole souther n culture from the mainstream music? It shows the ignorance on your own part.

  • ROC

Thank god i wasn’t born in the south.I would kill myself.

  • OLU

Why do black people in general all around the world feel it necessary to create division based upon things that are totally inappropriate for that purpose. Music is something that is meant to be enjoyed and appreciated not used as a reason to create more ridiculous division in the black community.
Why get so emotional about someone slagging of a rapper or a genre of music you are into when the bottom line is if they don’t like it then it is their loss and should have little or no effect upon how much it means to you. I’m not a big fan of south rap just like i’m not a big fan of rock but for me to say that both of these are devoid of talent, and undeserving of their mainstream success would be very ignorant. I’ve read posts saying that east coast fans need to grow up but surely the fact that south rap fans feel it necessary to actually dignify comments made insulting their music and artists with in many cases equally small minded and stupid statements- “fuck y’all hater”- shows that maybe both sides need to do some maturing. Some south rap is awful but some of it is good, any hip hop fan who has heard a reasonable amount of it should know that. This article is full of sweeping generalisations written in a way to cause maximum offense to southern hip hop fans and re-affirm the convictions of those misguided enough to already share BOL’s opinion. It is far more of a childish rant than it is effective journalism and should provoke nothing but indifference from true hip hop fans.
