Best Songs of the Week Featuring DJ Khaled, YG and More
The summer is not quite over, but we're on the verge of the best month of it. Luckily, all of your favorite artists are aware that now is the perfect time to drop new music, with hopes of landing that one definitive summer hit. This week, look no further, as XXL corrals the 10 bangers you need to know about in XXL's best songs of the week.
DJ Khaled will always find a way to have a mega-hit. His new single, "No Brainer," features the most of the lineup from last year's "You're the One" (Quavo, Justin Bieber and Chance The Rapper) for a second go-round. The track sounds like Khaled will be taking home another plaque, as it's a fun song about going out with your friends and getting chose.
YG came out of nowhere with the pre-order link to his forthcoming album Stay Dangerous, along with a new single and video by the name of "Handgun" with A$AP Rocky. The track brings Rocky into YG's world of high-paced party music. The hook is fun and both rappers employ the Big Tymerz's "Get Your Roll On" flow. YG's verse is also hilarious.
Speaking of L.A. rappers, Tyler, The Creator clearly wants his respect as a talented lyricist. The work he's put in this week makes a pretty good argument. First, he dropped "Potato Salad," where Tyler and his buddy A$AP Rocky rap over Monica and Missy Elliott's "Knock Knock." They both go crazy, with Tyler dropping some incredible (and slightly out of character) flexes. Then, he kept it in the AWGE family by dropping "Tiptoe" on the beat for Playboi Carti's single "R.I.P." Here, Tyler channels Busta Rhymes very convincingly, before jumping into another flow.
Sticking with another bar-heavy rapper, Swervo, the collab album between Chicago spitter G-Herbo and decorated Atlanta producer Southside, came out today. One of the hardest songs on it is "100 Sticks," where Herbo and Young Thug spit over a pacing, key-driven beat. Thug has the hook and shines on his verse.
If you're into technical rappers, you'll like Denzel Curry, who just dropped his much anticipated album, Ta13oo. Off of the project comes the frenetic "Vengeance," where Curry teams up with JPEGMAFIA and Zillakami with haunting results. Considering these are all high-energy acts, it's a great fit for all involved.
Dave East set Karma 2 free today and unveiled a track with BlocBoy JB, the crawling "No Stylist." The unlikely pairing work well, even going back and forth for one of the verses. BlocBoy sounds good over this type of darker beat and Dave East adapts his flow next to his rhyming partner.
Yet another 2018 XXL Freshman dropped some tunes this week. Trippie Redd has been dropping more songs recently, with all of the tracks coming like a breath of fresh air. One of this week's drops is "Black Magic," where he starts off rapping, then sings and really sells the track. Plus, the lyric "Switch cars like my mood swings" is just too cool.
Childhood friends and 2018 XXL Freshmen Smokepurpp and Lil Pump also joined forces this week for "Nephew." The track makes it clear that they have strong chemistry, with the both of them talking tough and making outlandish declarations, such as "Uzi make him doo doo." Also, Lil Pump reveals that his grandma has a face tat.
This week raps up with new music from living legend N.O.R.E., who has stuck around in hip-hop after blowing up in an entirely different era. He is one of the most respected figures in rap and will continue to be, so his return with the new album 5E is welcomed with open arms. The song "She's Mine," featuring Tory Lanez, has the feel of a good NYC summer single, with N.O.R.E. showing appreciation to his wife and her love.
