In October 2016, Kevin Gates was sentenced to 180 days in jail for battery after kicking a female fan in the chest during a show in Florida. Today (March 24), he was scheduled to be released from Polk County Jail, where he was incarcerated, but because of a new development, Gates isn't getting out just yet.

XXL has confirmed with Polk County Central Booking that Gates is being held on an out of state warrant for a felony weapons charge out of Illinois. He is set to be extradited to Cook County, where the weapons charge stems from.

According to one report, Gates has a rap sheet in Illinois that includes "several gun charges from 2013 in Illinois, including aggravated unlawful use of a weapon." No word yet on whether these are the same charges now keeping him from being released.

Gates is one of the biggest rap stars in the world, and his 2016 debut album Islah went platinum without any features (not counting the Trey Songz, Ty Dolla $ign and Jamie Foxx deluxe cut "Jam"). His impending release from jail signaled the return of one of rap's most gifted pens, but now fans will have to wait even longer to see the Baton Rouge rapper come home.

XXL has reached out to Atlantic Records for comment. Gates' next court hearing is scheduled for April 21.
