Twitter Reacts to Jay Z’s Subliminal Disses on DJ Khaled’s “Shining”

Shortly after the 2017 Grammy Awards wrapped up Sunday night (Feb. 12), DJ Khaled dropped a new song titled “Shining” featuring Beyonce and Jay Z. The single will be featured on Khaled’s upcoming album, Grateful, and features his newborn son Asahd on the cover, but it’s Jay’s verse that has people talking, particularly some lines that seem pointed at a particular somebody.

In his closing verse, Jay raps, “I shouldn’t even worry, backward niggas/12 solo albums, all platinum, nigga/I know you ain’t out here talkin’ numbers, right?/I know you ain’t out here talkin’ summers, right?/I know you ain’t walkin’ ’round talkin’ down/Sayin’ boss shit when you a runner, right?”

There is a notion that the lines are meant for Drake, the sentiment believed to be the same as the one Jay used on “I Got the Keys.” On “Summer Sixteen,” Drake rapped, “I used to wanna be on Roc-A-Fella then I turned into Jay.” Jay’s words then can be framed as the rapper distancing himself from any such comparison. Drake has as well in the past claimed to own the summer, a distinction Jay isn’t quite ready to give up. “You know how many hot bitches I own?” Jay rapped on “Niggas in Paris” in reference to his seasonal dominance.

Twitter users draw their best conclusions from the bars in the gallery below, with the history of lukewarm beef between these two well-documented. Some say Jay should just call Drake out by name, but dissecting and debating is half the fun.
