Awards show red carpets are the places where the media and the celebrities they create coalesce, but perhaps they'd be more accurately described as a velvet runway for the world's most star-studded fashion show. Over the last 25 or so years, rappers have become a huge part of this tradition, and at every awards show, you can expect at least one of them to stun the world with a surprising outfit.

Lil' Kim made waves when she pulled up at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards in a one-piece jumpsuit that left one of her breasts almost entirely exposed. Snoop Dogg must've angered feminist watch groups everywhere when he showed up at the 2003 VMAs with two women literally on a leash. Yikes.

CeeLo Green used the red carpet at the 2017 Grammy Awards as a stage for the grand unveiling of his new alter ego, Gnarly Davidson. His bizarre gold outfit made him the butt of more than a few jokes, but it got people talking, and that was most likely the ultimate goal for the Goodie Mob member.

Today, XXL takes a look at 10 rappers who made lasting impressions at award shows in the past. In the gallery above, you'll see MC's who took dressing up to an entirely new level and left their marks in awards show history before they even made their way to the stage.
