Chance The Rapper spent some time last year campaigning for the Grammys to recognize free music, starting a petition for independent artists such as himself to receive their proper due despite missing much of the formal industry backing. Shortly after, the Grammys announced they would recognize such releases, though they said months later that Chance’s petition did not influence their decision.

The scope of that decision will continue to resonate throughout, with Chance using Twitter on Thursday (Jan. 18) to note that projects released via SoundCloud would be eligible for the 2018 Grammys. In announcing the criteria for streaming albums to be considered, the Grammys explained that a streaming service must exist for a year and have a paid subscription option. SoundCloud launched their Go service in March of last year, meaning projects released there just missed 2017 eligibility.

Chance’s own Coloring Book was released through Apple Music at first, and earned him nominations in such categories as Best New Artist and Best Rap Album. When the Grammys announced they would consider streaming albums, Chance wrote on Twitter, “The victory this morning isn’t about me, it’s about all the Soundcloud albums that may now be recognized for excellence.” That specific recognition will be delayed slightly though due to the parameters laid out in June.

Just this week, SoundCloud named Coloring Book their top album of the year, Chance’s embrace of digital streaming no doubt a factor.
