The country of Brazil will remain in the spotlight for the next two weeks as the 2016 Summer Olympics take place in beautiful city of Rio. Having kicked off the Olympic festivities last Friday, Aug. 5, viewers from all over the globe got a chance to learn a little bit more of the Brazilian history and culture through the opening montages of the ceremony. While showcasing its energetic people, marvelous beaches, historic soccer culture and drop-dead gorgeous women, fans also got to learn about the preferred music choices of the South American country, which included plenty of hip-hop.

With the first origins of hip-hop beginning in the 1970s and 1980s in Brazil, it wasn't until 1988 that the first Brazilian hip-hop rap crew, Cultura De Rua, was formed. Later that year, the first Brazilian hip-hop album was released in the country titled Hip Hop, Cultura De Rua. Meshing signature Brazilian sounds with early American hip-hop sounds, Brazil's hip-hop culture proved to be more than just a trend as in the 1990s the movement kept growing strong and steady, reaching its ultimate height in the year 2003, when a new style of rap and new a new crop of hip-hop artists was introduced to listeners.
