Future’s ‘DS2′ Becomes His First Solo Platinum Album

It’s official – as of May 27, Future has his first platinum solo album with DS2. It’s a huge accomplishment for the Atlanta superstar, who scored his first platinum album with Drake for What a Time to Be Alive this past March.

Future’s sales have always been a funny thing, despite the fact that he’s one of the biggest rap artists of the past five years. His critically acclaimed debut album Pluto only sold 41,000 units first week and never went gold. (Epic, perhaps realizing they had fumbled an excellent album, re-released it months later with three new songs and a newly sequenced tracklist.) Honest was next, and though the departure towards pop was ambitious to some, the album flopped, moving 53,000 units first week. But DS2, fresh off an incredible mixtape trilogy in 2015, more than doubled Honest’s first week sales in that same time span, pushing 126,000 copies off the strength of “Commas” and “Trap Niggas,” thus marking a huge return for the Wizard.

Remarkably enough, Future scored another plaque at the end of May for a single that was never even on an album. “March Madness,” one of the most powerful songs of 2015 and another sign of Future’s return to form, was also certified gold by the RIAA. That song was featured on 56 Nights, the mixtape originally made available on iTunes and Spotify under DJ Esco’s name before being pulled from those services for unknown reasons. The mixtape was named after Esco’s imprisonment in Dubai, and some postulated that Future had released the mixtape under his DJ’s name to pay him back for going through such a hellish experience.

Congrats are in order to Future, who had a rough weekend after sound issues at Roots Picnic and getting told to leave Summer Jam due to an early curfew. He’s set to go on tour with Drake this summer, and judging by his snapchat, we might be getting another mixtape soon. Beast Mode 2 on the way?
