As has become a rite of passage with young artists passing through New York City--and especially for those who hail from the Tri-State--Fetty Wap sat down at Hot 97 with Ebro and Rosenberg. The newly-minted XXL Freshman revealed, among other things, that it was his vocal supporter Kanye West who first introduced him to Drake (the latter would go on to bless Fetty's "My Way" remix with a verse). "Honestly, Kanye texted me and told me he gave Drake my number," Fetty says. "The way he came at me about even getting on the song--you know when certain people got a certain power, where if they wanted to do it, they could just do it." But the young MC says that the Toronto star asked for his blessing to hop on the track. When it was finished, Drake FaceTimed Fetty and showed him the scene in the club as it was debuted. On a less musical note, Fetty also addressed the dreads he's been rocking of late. "They’re real dreads, but I didn’t grow them," he explains, saying that they came from a woman he knows in Newark who cut off her own hair. It’s a lady that I know from Newark. He goes on to argue that they've had a positive effect on his music: "The last songs I recorded have all been some of the hottest songs I did, just from the good energy I’ve been getting."

Fetty Wap struck gold last year with "Trap Queen," a song that has enjoyed an unusual and perhaps improbable rise through the Internet and the Billboard charts. Characterized by his brazen, emotive vocals, the New Jersey up-and-comer was able to craft a record that serves as both a heartfelt ode to a loved one and something to rattle car frames and club speakers. Though he followed "Trap Queen" with the aforementioned "My Way," Fetty has yet to release a definitive full-length since he crept into the spotlight. His long-delayed Fetty Wap: The Mixtape is expected some time this year.
