Taylor Swift Raps Young Buck’s “Shorty Wanna Ride”

The last decade has been one of tumult for Young Buck. Ten years ago, the Nashville rapper seemed poised to ride the unstoppable hype train Interscope had built for G-Unit to a long, lucrative career. Instead, the period after his 2004 debut Straight Outta Ca$hville was marred by legal turmoil and unrest at his label and within the G-Unit ranks. Last night (April 23), none of that mattered. Buck received the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a rapper: a Taylor Swift co-sign. The Shorty Awards, meant to honor those who produce short form content, specifically for social media, named Swift their winner for Best Fansite. In her video acceptance speech, she expressed her confusion over the name of the awards show given her height (5'10") and favorite single Lil Jon produced in 2004 for a rapper not from Atlanta ("Shorty Wanna Ride"). She rapped the chorus to the latter, suggesting that her hip-hop acumen extends beyond Kendrick Lamar and C-Murder.

Swift also took home the award for Best Singer, beating out Beyonce and Demi Lovato, among others. Her last album, 1989, sold nearly 1.3 million copies in its first week of release, or the seventh-largest opening week for an album since Soundscan's inception. (The six albums ahead of it were all released between 2000 and 2002, in the RIAA's print-your-own-money days.) Buck has been enjoying G-Unit's resurgence, contributing to their recent EP, The Beast is G-Unit.
