August 1 will mark the 20 year anniversary of the release of the certified classic Raekwon solo album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. Apparently Raekwon and his partner in rhyme for the project Ghostface Killah have something special in store to commemorate two decades of the purple tape. Yesterday, the Chef and Ghost hosted what they dubbed a "sneak peek #PurpleCarpet screening" at the Sundacne Film Festival and revealed a trailer of an upcoming documentary related to the LP. The short film is titled The Purple Tape Files and will give some insight into the making of the heralded album.

OB4CL is widely considered as one of the best New York hip-hop albums of the '90s and one of the top LPs in the Wu-Tang Clan catalog. Officially Raekwon's solo debut, the project featured the entire Wu with extra assistance from Ghostface Killah and Cappadonna. The project spawned classics like "Criminology," "Incarcerated Scarfaces," "Verbal Intercourse," "Ice Cream," "Glaciers of Ice" and "Rainy Dayz."

And of course, there was the purple tape. Rae explained the reasoning for picking the odd hue years later. “You know what inspired it? Redman had a tape that was red,” The Wu co-founder explained “I knew a lot of hip-hop n-ggas always run around their cars and have a bunch of CD’s on the floor; in the chair or whatever whatever. So I’m like ‘how do I make sure my sh-t stands out from everybody else’s?’”

Film will be funded through the FanBacked website. Donors will receive incentives based on their amount donated. The best deal, For $200, Raekwon and Ghostface will review your mixtape. "The album was our vision, and the thought of having anyone but us in the driver's seat was unthinkable," Raekwon said to Rolling Stone. "This project is for the fans by the fans, me included. I'm not with the politics and shit, and being put into a position where we even would have to consider anyone's watered down version wasn't an option. Only Built 4 Cuban Linx was an honest and authentic project; it's a must that the film is also."
