James-Brown

It's been called the most sampled drum break in history, and one of the most recognizable beats in hip-hop. James Brown himself felt the funk so fiercely when drummer Clyde Stubblefield laid it down that he named the song "Funky Drummer" on the spot. The track's backbone became a platform for much of hip-hop's first generation, when DJs were cutting funk and soul and disco records for MCs to rap over, well before ProTools and Auto-Tune took the sound into a more digital direction. "Funky Drummer," recorded in 1969, could easily be considered among the most important songs in hip-hop's 40-plus-year existence.

With the James Brown biopic, Get On Up, hitting theaters today, XXL decided to check out which hip-hop songs sampled "Funky Drummer"'s iconic drum break. From KRS-One to Nicki Minaj and everywhere in between, here are 22 rappers who sampled the Hardest Working Man In Show Business. Keep it funky.
