Kriss Kross’ Chris Kelly’s Death Confirmed As A Drug Overdose

Kriss Kross Reuniting

Chris Kelly, one half of Kriss Kross and one of the artists behind the group’s smash 1992 hit “Jump,” was found dead in his home in early May, with the medical examiner yesterday confirming that the cause of death was a drug overdose.

Kelly’s death at the age of 34 came as a shock to the hip-hop community, many of whom offered condolences and expressed their surprise and sadness at his death. The M.E.’s office reported that there was a mixture of drugs in Kelly’s system at the time of his death, but did not specify which drugs. Kelly’s mother reportedly told police that her son had used both cocaine and heroin the night before his death, and had abused drugs in the past.

Shortly following his death, Kelly’s mother and So So Def released the following joint statement: “It is with deep sadness that we announce that our beloved Chris Kelly has passed away on May 1. To millions of fans worldwide, he was the trendsetting, backwards pants-wearing one-half of Kris Kross who loved making music. But to us, he was just Chris – the kind, generous and fun-loving life of the party. Though he was only with us a short time, we feel blessed to have been able to share some incredible moments with him. His legacy will live on through his music, and we will forever love him.”
