Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Can’t Hold Us” Makes Billboard History

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis isn’t slowing down their rapid ascent to the top. The duo’s second single, “Can’t Hold Us,” off The Heist also reached No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. With their prior hit “Thrift Shop” featuring Wanz—which stayed at the top for six nonconsecutive weeks—the Seattle pair is the first to take two singles to No. 1 in Billboard’s five-decade history.

Previously, Lady Gaga was the last artist to send two singles—“Just Dance” and “Poker Face”—to No. 1 in 2009. Since then, Macklemore & Lewis are the first act to chart two singles on the Hot 100. In addition, the single has sold 262,000 copies this week.

I don’t get understand. They’re the “first to take two singles to No. 1 in Billboard’s five-decade history”? That can’t be right, there are hundreds of artists with two or more #1 singles in Billboard’s history. Did you mean two consecutive singles? Their first two singles? And then in the next paragraph you write that Lady Gaga did it in 2009, so how could they be the first?

No shots, just genuinely want to understand what exactly what chart history Macklemore and Ryan Lewis made. Can anyone clarify?

I dont get it…. in the article they say they are the first to send 2 songs to #1 and then say lady gaga did it previously. what was the point/message of this terrible article? xxl should read this and re-word it or something…

ok i read more on the bilboard site about this…the history is this. A. its the first DUO to send 2 songs to #1 B. its their first 2 single ever and they both went to #1….not just sending 2 single period but the first two that the artist came out with as singles.

great accomplishment but making history is a bit of a stretch and its just worded that way to get peoples attention…worked on me haha
