Arguing that, “America has changed since Francis Scott Key penned our anthem in 1814,” a group is petitioning for the Obama Administration to “recognize the need for a new national anthem,” one that even after its creation, is still hot and fresh out the kitchen. Yes, those are lyrics to R. Kelly’s 2003 hit “Ignition (Remix)”. The group behind the petition is actually calling for the party anthem to be our country’s next national anthem. So far they’ve collected over 11,000 signatures but, they’ll need 100,000 signatures by April 2nd—so it’s safe to assume that the Pied Piper’s classic won’t be sung at any football games anytime soon.
But with lyrics like “Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,” couldn’t our National Anthem use an upgrade? We doubt anyone even speaks like that in 2013. But of all the R. Kelly songs that could replace the Star Spangled Banner as our national anthem, “Ignition” doesn’t quite feel like the right fit to represent the nation. Here are 13 R. Kelly songs that would make for a much better replacement for our current national anthem – Kai Acevedo (@LilPuccii)
