XXL Special Issue Ranks 1990s Rap Songs

XXL will be presenting a special, collector’s issue later this month that counts down the top 250 hip-hop songs from 1990-1999.

Regarded as the best decade in hip-hop music ever, XXL’s staff took on the daunting task of narrowing down the genre’s most important, influential and, of course, the illest joints from the 1990s. Fans will be surprised at who did, and did not make it onto the definitive list.

XXL 250 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs 1990-1999 hits newstands nationwide on May 24. —XXL Staff

  • NAPTOWNNUISANCE

Yeah Im sure a lot of the most important songs in my eyes will be left off. 250 songs is not a lot really if you think about a ten year span, of dominating hip hop. Im sure there will some garbage on there too. Songs that shouldnt even be considered important.

  • NAPTOWNNUISANCE

Actually 9 year span but whatever.

    • Clint

No actually its 10 Special Ed

    • alderman j

Damn!!! Niggas can remember they screen name and email address but cant count to 10?!?!?!?! damn homey!!

  • NAPTOWNNUISANCE

Do the math moron. 90 – 99. Nine years, 90 to 2000 ten. I know school was hard for you but try your best not to show it to the world on the internet.

    • chris

actually a decade is 10 not including 2000.

Agree, Best Rap Decade ever but the ranking is trash. Who ever made these selections simply does not know about Hip-Hop. The most acclaimed album ever, Illmatic did not have a song in the top 10: Halftime. Anyway, this is whats wrong with Hip-Hop, I mean Rap for you, you just don’t understand. Btw, I did not buy the garbage mag, I just read it, its not worth the money.

  • quiksta

Not 1 DJ Quik track on the whole list??? How is that possible?!?! XXL=bunch of frauds!

Thanks a whole lot for the 250 greatest hip-hop songs issue. I got a little teary-eyed thinkin back about those jams. I keep tellin these young cats that without those joints from when most of em was still in diapers, the music just wouldn’t be here today. Wish ya’ll coulda put more about Chi-Town MCs in there but at the time I guess Do Or Die, Twista, Johnny P and C.C. were the only ones gettin back then. Well thanks again. Sincerely, a TRU hip-hop head

  • Ashton

Whomever the panel was is bullshit. Nas appeared after #50. Puffy #2? Missy #85? DMX should be higher. Where’s Mass Appeal by Gang Starr? No Timbaland tracks? more Tribe Called Quest? Let the Rhythm Hit ‘Em & Know The Ledge by Eric B. and Rakim? Get a new panel.

  • RafarTM2011

    i got that magazin…. and I’m asking myself : why no Eazy-E ?!

that was really surprising me ://////// i looked over and over again ‘n I found no song from Eazy-E =OOOO

  • adrian

  • Chronyak

i feel compelled to squash this decade beef!

“raps best decade” = 10 years, 1990 to 1999. thats why its called the 90′s. 2000 onward is some OTHER shit!

    1/ 1990
    2/ 1991
    3/ 1992
    4/ 1993
    5/ 1994
    6/ 1995
    7/ 1996
    8/ 1997
    9/ 1998
    10/ 1999

(my 2c: i think organized confusion or showbiz and ag should have been considered over 50cent any day…)
