Underground hip-hop artists and activist, Immortal Technique, is holding a benefit concert for the Jena 6 at Lehman College in the Bronx on November 1. The event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Lovinger Theater. Tickets will be $7 for Lehman students and $10 for non-students. “This is a benefit show with all proceeds going towards the legal defense fund for the Jena 6,” says Immortal Technique. “It is important to rally and march, but it is equally, if not more important, to speak by enforcing the necessary channels for legal action.” Immortal Technique gained notoriety in the underground circuit in 2003 with the release of his critically acclaimed album, Revolutionary, Vol. 2. Drawing comparisons to Chuck D from Public Enemy, the Harlem native has acquired a cult following through his scathing political and social commentary. Immortal Technique has been a staunch supporter of the Jena 6, a group of six Black teenagers from Jena, Louisiana who were wrongfully charged with second-degree attempted murder after beating a white Jena High School student. The incident allegedly stemmed from two Black high school students sitting under a “white” tree on the campus. White students allegedly responded by making threats against the Black students and hanging nooses from the tree.
