March 9, 2012, marks the 15-year anniversary of The Notorious B.I.G.’s death and XXL is paying tribute to the late, great Brooklyn MC with a special issue dedicated to his legacy.
Similar to the honorary issue dedicated to Tupac Shakur and the 15th anniversary of his passing, released by XXL in September of 2011, the XXL team spoke to some of those closest to Big for an in-depth look into his life and death. From his kids T’Yanna and Christopher “CJ” Wallace and their mamas, Jan Jackson and Faith Evans, to his closest friends like members of Junior M.A.F.I.A. and others, many got their chance to share stories and more to pay homage to the beloved MC. Most even disclosed rare, never-before-published photos of Biggie from their personal collections, which are featured in this month’s issue. Since Big was one of the most swagger-jacked rappers of all time, there’s a list of the 100 best Biggie bites, a look a what The Notorious One might have looked like at 40-plus, and much more.
Even though the issue is a Big tribute there’s much more in the mag to look forward to. It’s been 15 years since 1997, arguably the best year in hip-hop music, and XXL explores that very notion with a detailed essay. There’s also a look back at 2011’s rap music with a recap of the five best albums, mixtapes, verses, producers and singles of the year.
Check out XXLMag.com for an entire month’s-worth of Biggie-related stories that celebrate his life and death, extras from the issue, including outtakes, as well as everyday hip-hop news and much more. And cop the special tribute issue when it hits stands on February 7.—XXL Staff
ANOTHER PERSON OFFICER WILLIAM STYLES HIMSELF ON
i definitely agree that i think 1997 was one of the best years for hip hop. including 1994. in fact MOST of my memories from 1997 are from the hip-hop video’s they used to show on the BOX. i dont want to digress, but i even think 1997 was one of the best years for movies. 1997 was just a legendary year all around. even though i was a lil ass kid,i still enjoyed that year.
and BIGGIE is still the GOAT. im GLAD yall put my nigga BIGGIE on the cover, its been a while since i wanted to spend money on a XXLMAG. one of the last one’s i bought was the one that had shyne on the cover in 2010.
Shit ain’t been da sym since Biggie died…GOAT nd one has 2 consider his age by then….GOD GIVEN
Still the GOAT
don’t lie…you guys just have nothing else to report….BTW,
for being XXL, your articles suck compared to most hip hop blogs. You guys haven’t been the same since you voted oj tha juiceman into being a freshmen. Shame.
Biggie’s The greatest MC who ever stepped to the mic. following behind him is Nas, Jay-Z, and Laryn Hill
2pac still da greatest
I hate to say it, but these guys rest, I don’t see ya paying tribute to any other guys besides BIG, PAC, and JMJ, but there have been so many great MCs to lose there life at a young age too, its time to let them rest in peace, they will never be forgotten but its time to move on
what about Big L?
are you guys dumb?
its the 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS DEATH. show some respect for one of the greatest, smh
sounds like its gonna be a good issue
Still hands down the greatest even after all these years, we were just unfortunate not to get some more classic albums from the GOAT…
haven’t bought a magazine in a long time but this will definitely be getting purchased..
RIP Big.
