Young Money, Cash Money were the sole hip-hop winners at this year's MTV Video Music Awards. Though the likes of Kanye West, Jay-Z, Childish Gambino and K' Naan received nods, all left home empty-handed. Drake and Lil Wayne's "HYFR"  beat out Gambino's "Heartbeat," Jay and 'Ye's "Niggas in Paris," G.O.O.D Music's "Mercy" and  Nicki Minaj's "Beez in the Trap" with 2 Chainz. Nick would still have her moment, though. Nick took home Best female Video for "Starships" despite facing stiff competition from Rihanna’s “We Found Love” and “Love on Top” from Beyonce.

Chris Brown took home the Moonman for his best male video for “Turn Up the Music” beating out fan-favorite Justin Bieber and heavyweight Usher. He thanked Team Breezy for allowing him to direct the video himself. The award for best hip-hop video was awkwardly given out by Andy Sandberg and Rashida Jones as they attempted to sling some rhymes of their own and Sandberg proclaimed that, “Hip-hop is all about being sensitive and vulnerable now.”

While Rihanna was one of the top nominees this year, she won the last award of the night, nabbing Video of the Year for the Calvin Harris-assisted, "We Found Love."

Rihanna also had the honor of opening the show with an energetic performance of “Cockiness (I Love It)" with A$AP Rocky. She then offered up "We Found Love" while dancing amongst a circle of her fans.

In his his first-ever VMA performance, 2 Chainz brought down the house with his renditions of “Yuck” and " No Worries" with assistance from Weezy. Although Wayne almost lost his pants, it was nothing in comparison to the stage-dive he did at the end of the performance. Fierce looking VMA veteran Alicia Keys paired up with Nicki Minaj for a performance of “Girl on Fire” in which Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas made an appearance on stage and did several floor exercises. Bringing a tropical feel to the VMA stage with beach grass and a ring of fire, Frank Ocean performed “Thinkin Bout You” partially acoustic, however, he brought soul to the arena and drew a huge crowd response.

With nothing off the table for host Kevin Hart, he included the recent bottle-throwing incident between Drake and Chris Brown at W.i.P. Nightclub in his opening monologue, saying that the men are feuding over “a mistake.” Per Hart, recycling was the cause. “Drake and Chris Brown, I’ma nip this in the bud right now,” he said. “Drake loves to recycle. Drake thought there was a recycle bin in Chris’s section; he threw the bottle; Chris didn’t see it ‘cause he was dancin’ so when he lifted his head up, he got hit with the bottle. Drake was like ‘My bad, the bin.’ Chris was like, ‘You called me a bitch?’ ‘No, the bin.’ That’s how they got in the fight.”

An hysterical interlude in which Hart tried to convince 2 Chainz to add a third chain to his neck also entertained the viewers. “Everyone is wearing two chains,” Hart said as the camera panned to the janitor who was wearing two chains.

It wouldn’t be MTV without a big announcement. Last year, Beyonce used the show to break her baby news. This year, Wiz Kalifa confirmed that his girlfriend, Amber Rose, is pregnant. “I’m hearing that you’ll be having a new addition to your life soon,” Ke$ha said while the duo were giving out the award for Best New Artist. “Yea, about six months. You guys gotta wait. It’s gonna be bigger than the Moonman,” he said as the camera panned towards Amber, rubbing her belly.—Emily Cappiello
