In one way or another, the BET Hip Hop Awards always offer up at least a few surprises, and this year's edition is no different. Popping up to deliver a surprise freestyle at the 2018 BET Hip Hop Awards was the legendary Erykah Badu, who delivered an impressive verse in a cypher with Bri Steves, Neelam Hakeem, Chika and Sharaya J.

Leading off the cypher, which was aired tonight after taking place a few weeks ago, was Jersey City, N.J.-hailing Sharaya J, who delivered a barrage of punchlines as she flexed a tight flow.

Next up was Chika, Montgomery, Ala. artist who also came with bars about her come-up and her plans to take her game to another level. While she didn't flaunt a flashy flow, her bars were consistent, and each punch landed the way it was supposed to.

The third rhymer was Neelam Hakeem, a Los Angeles-based rhymer who let loose some bars about revolution and the need to unify. Although the content was spoken word-esque, she handled the beat well.

Fourth to go off in the cypher was Philadelphia's own Bri Steves, whom XXL profiled for The Break this past summer. Letting of clever bars in every which way, Bri definitely more than held her own, switching up her flow just enough to accommodate minor changes in the beat.

Ending things was Badu, who was also the DJ for the cypher. Although she's known as a neo-soul singer, she's been known to drop off bars from time to time, and she definitely held it down.

Other dope cyphers on the night include bars from Vic Mensa, Taylor Bennett, G Herbo and more. If you came to the 2018 BET Hip Hop Awards for bars, you didn't walk away disappointed.
