J.I.D has been generating a ton of buzz over the last several months, and during a recent stop by Hot 97, he proved why he's been praised when he absolutely destroyed a Funkmaster Flex freestyle.

Although things like freestyling and long-form verses seem less en vogue now than ever, getting to show spit in front of the legendary Funkmaster Flex is still a huge deal, and something of a rite of passage for rap up-and-comers. If freestyling for Flex is a test, J.I.D passed with flying colors as he glided over 1990s instrumentals effortlessly for a little over seven minutes.

"Split it with my niggas because what's mines is ours/Only way you multiply if you divide the power/Grind for hours--pronto--piney sour/Why the fuck you think this nigga Cole was high for hours," the Dreamville MC raps in his opening bars. It only gets crazier from there.

J.I.D is one of the rap game's most promising new stars and this freestyle wasn't the first example of him blacking out. Last month, he dropped his 12-track debut album, The Never Story, which featured plenty of the nimble flows and deft wordplay we hear in his Funkmaster Flex freestyle. If you listened to his album before you saw the freestyle, you weren't surprised by his lyrical prowess. The thing is, this is really just the beginning.

But today, we can focus on the now. You can check out J.I.D's electric freestyle session below.
