ScHoolboy Q Hates The “Ad-Lib King” Nickname

ScHoolboy Q's long-awaited major label debut album Oxymoron dropped yesterday (Feb. 25), and in the buildup to the album's release, Q sat down with XXL to speak about how he uses his distinctive voice to enhance his tracks.

"Shit, just my personality, that’s all I say," Q said when asked about using his voice as an instrument. "I mean, I always liked the ad-libs, too, when I was little and shit. We used to always like ad-libs. I just feel like ad-libs just turn shit up more—especially the right ad-lib. Like, for example, the 'yawk, that shit, like, anybody just hear me say that, if I say that three times everybody goes crazy. Or four times, actually. Say it four times, everybody goes crazy no matter what."

Q's affinity for ad-libs—and his fans' love for them when he does do them—have earned him the title of the "Ad-Lib King" in some corners, but that's something that he's not very fond of.

"Ad-libs is just something I believe really needs to be in rap, you know what I'm saying?" Q continued. "I just hate the fact that a lot of people be calling me 'the Ad-Lib King.' What kind of shit is that? That sucks. I don’t want to be called 'the Ad-Lib King.' I just like ad-libs."—Interview by kris ex
