Roddy Ricch’s Pitch for 2019 XXL Freshman
Before the 2019 XXL Freshman Class will be revealed this summer, the Freshman hopefuls are here to show and prove why they deserve a spot in this year’s class. The 10th Spot voting will launch on March 25, which means hip-hop's rising newcomers are vying for a spot on the 2019 XXL Freshman cover.
Roddy Ricch has spat and sung his way to hip-hop glory. The 20-year-old Compton rapper made a huge leap over the course of one year: After first making tremors with 2017's Feed Tha Streets, the mixtape's sequel, Feed Tha Streets II, hit the Billboard 200, peaking at No. 68. It's success—and Roddy's rise—was in large part due to the hit June 2018 single "Die Young," which he wrote on the night of XXXTentacion's death as a part dedication. The track has been streamed more than 46 million times on Spotify. He's followed that up with the Marshmellow collaboration, "Project Dreams," which now sits at more than 60 million Spotify streams.
Signed to Bird Vision Entertainment, Roddy is making major moves. He's been cosigned by the likes of Nipsey Hussle and Meek Mill, both of whom brought the rap newbie out on stage at different concerts. Meek furthered his endorsement by blessing him with a Dreamchasers chain and featuring him on the Championships track, "Splash Warning" (alongside Future and Young Thug). With his melodic rap-sung style (see the infectious "Fucc It Up"), Roddy is poised to take home some championships of his own.
Now that you've heard his pitch, remember to vote for your favorite artist beginning March 25. The 2019 XXL Freshman 10th Spot will run for one week. This is where the public gets the chance to vote an artist into the XXL Freshman Class. Go here to make your vote count for your favorite artist.
