Mick Jenkins Drops “The Artful Dodger” Produced by Kaytranada

The artwork for Mick Jenkins' new song "The Artful Dodger" is a fanned-out swiss army knife, and one listen to the track shows the Chicago rapper deploying similarly sharp and diverse rhymes. Produced by Kaytranada and THEMpeople, the song utilizes a BadBadNotGood sample to provide Jenkins with a sound bed worthy of his lyrical attack.

In the closing moments of the song's second verse, Mick raps, "I look around like y’all trollin right? / It’s overkill we know the type, it’s overpriced / The quality probably won’t suffice / I don’t condone to roll the dice on this one fam / I mean we all had to fall on our shit before / Just get up ‘fore shit it the fan."

Jenkins had previously teamed up with BadBadNotGood in January for a cover of TheSenseiBlue’s "On the Map." Following the August release of his EP Wave[s], many are hoping that the new year will see Mick release his debut album, and "The Artful Dodger" is a promising sign. Jenkins and Kaytranada had previously worked together on 2014's "Rain."

Back in April of 2015, Jenkins spoke to XXL about artists who release projects before the proper recognition is there, saying, "I think it’s just interesting how a J. Cole or a Kendrick or myself or a Big K.R.I.T. will have five projects before anybody knows. And we’re talking about some of the best rappers, we didn’t find out about them until they were three, four projects in."
