In Quebec--and in communities around the world that claim French roots--June 24 is Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, a midsummer festival full of feasts, parades and, in the 1960s, political demonstrations that often turned violent. But in Long Beach, June 24 is about Boogie. Last year, it marked the release of his breakthrough mixtape, Thirst 48. This year, it will see the release of his much-anticipated follow-up, The Reach. The significance? The Compton native's son, Darius, was born that day; he appears here, on a new song called "Make Me Over." Darius asks for blessings from God before his dad posits, "That's my five-year-old kid, he still got crayons in his cupboard/Now how I'm supposed to tell him I got shot over a color?" The Reach, which drops a week before Long Beach star and XXL Freshman Vince StaplesSummertime '06, should further cement Boogie as one of the most vital young voices in hip-hop: "Sitting in my church, looking at my pastor/Say he trying to find a witness, I'm like, 'Nah, I ain't snitching.'" "Make Me Over" is preceded by the Jahlil Beats-produced "Oh My."
