21 Savage has made a major financial contribution to help immigrants get legal representation while detained by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

On Friday (June 14), reps for the Atlanta rapper announced that 21 donated $25,000 to the Southern Poverty Law Center, an Alabama-based nonprofit civil rights organization that is helping him with his ongoing deportation battle with ICE. 21's attorney, Charles Kuck said the monies will go to help immigrants in detention centers in the deep South get access to legal counsel.

"21 Savage is making this donation public because everyday Americans need to know that ICE is using civil immigration detention as a weapon against immigrants, many of whom, like 21 Savage, have relief from deportation and are able to fix their immigration status," Kuck said in a press release.

As you may recall, 21 Savage, born She'yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was arrested and detained on Feb. 3 while driving in metro Atlanta. Authorities would later transport him to ICE after he was accused of being an illegal immigrant.

Willemijn Keizer, the organization's Director of Institutional Giving, said the rapper's donation will help detained immigrants get the "vital resources" they need to get proper representation.

"Only one in six immigrants detained in the Southeast has access to an attorney in removal proceedings. For an immigrant in detention, that legal representation can mean the difference between winning or losing their case—between staying with their family or being forced to return to a place that is no longer home," Keizer said in a press release.

21 Savage can relate to the struggles of a detained immigrant. The embattled rapper said back in February that being detained by ICE was his "worst nightmare."

"That’s why [I've] always been trying to get [my immigration documents] corrected," he stated. "Even if you got money, it ain’t easy. It ain’t no favoritism, and I respect it, I honestly respect it. It would be kind of messed up if they treated rich immigrants better than poor immigrants, I think."

Here's to 21 standing up for what he believes in.
