Don't let anyone tell you otherwise: Getting a No. 1 song in America is a huge deal. Considering that hip-hop is such a hugely popular genre nowadays, it's should come as no surprise that the genre dominates the Billboard charts. The year 2018 saw artists who have reached these heights before (Drake) and acts who have reached an entirely new level of popularity in comparison to their past (Childish Gambino and XXXTentacion). Here, XXL sheds some light on the hip-hop songs that have topped the Billboard Hot 100 this year.

Drake's commercial dominance simply can't be stopped. His hit single "God's Plan" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 1 in late January, accurately setting the tone for yet another dominant year. The song has maintained incredible staying power, not budging from the No. 1 spot until April 16, when Drake dropped his follow-up, "Nice For What," which hung around in the top spot for a few weeks, lost its spot, then returned in late May.

Childish Gambino's "This Is America" is a meteoric single, blowing up thanks to its enthralling video and 'Bino's SNL performance, in which he debuted the song. The gripping visual for the track has been viewed on YouTube more than 300 million times, a level of traction that has helped the song take the top spot on May 14.

Post Malone was already rolling into 2018 with a ton of momentum, but the success of his Ty Dolla $ign-assisted single "Psycho" took him to the next level. This is Post Malone's second No. 1 (his first was 2017's "Rockstar" with 21 Savage), but he also elevated Dolla $ign to his first chart topper.

Last week (June 18), Florida rapper XXXTentacion was murdered in his car, a victim of gun violence. As fans, friends and peers mourned, X's music began to gain even more popularity on the charts. His hit single "Sad!" leapt 51 spots to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 on June 25, a testament to the impact his music has made in a relatively short time.
