Over the last year or so, Cardi B and Post Malone have become two of the very biggest stars in hip-hop. So it might surprise some that both have been ruled ineligible for the Best New Artist trophy at the 2019 Grammy Awards.

According to the Associated Press, Bardi has been ruled out of this year's Best New Artist category because her breakout single, "Bodak Yellow," was nominated for two trophies at the 2018 Grammy Awards. As AP notes, the Grammys preclude artists who've previously been nominated for Grammy trophies to be included in the Best New Artist category.

This, of course, puts Bardi in an interesting space for artists who've become commercially dominant without ever getting the chance to compete for Best New Artist Grammy. Although she was considered for the Best New Artist nominations at the 2018 Grammy Awards, voters ultimately selected Lil Uzi Vert, SZA, Khalid, Julia Michaels and Alessia Cara (who won the award) as the actual nominees for the trophy.

An equally interesting case is the story of Post Malone, who, three years and two albums removed from "White Iverson," doesn't even feel like a new artist. In traditional terms, Post, unlike Bardi, actually met the qualifications for the trophy because he hadn't been nominated for a Grammy in the past. However, after a music industry voting session, voters determined that the success of his breakout singles and subsequent studio albums had made him ineligible for the "New Artist" tag.

Additionally, the AP reports that, like Cardi, Posty had been submitted for Best New Artist for the 2018 Grammy Awards, but he ultimately wasn't chosen as one of the final nominees. Now, Post will continue his commercial success without ever having garnered a nomination for Best New Artist at the Grammys.

In a bit of good news for both Cardi and Post, who both won trophies at the 2018 American Music Awards last night (Oct. 9), they stand a good chance at taking home trophies at next year's Grammy Awards.

This past April, just months after the 2018 Grammys, Cardi dropped off her Invasion of Privacy album, a debut LP that was equal parts critical darling and massive commercial success. Posty, dropped off his sophomore album, Beerbongs & Bentleys, which has been certified platinum.  The AP reports that Beerbongs & Bentleys' mix of rock, R&B and other genres led voters to rule it ineligible for the rap category, and it's now been pushed into contention with pop albums.
