Yesterday (Sept. 7), the rap world lost one of its most dynamic talents when Mac Miller died of an apparent drug overdose at the tender age of 26. Today, in memory of the Pittsburgh-bred artist, XXL offers glimpse at the rapper's different looks over the years.

During a mainstream career that stretched nearly a decade, Miller grew up right before the eyes of fans everywhere. He emerged on the scene as a backpacking frat rapper, strutting around the city as his friend and collaborator TreeJay carried a boombox and he spit over a classic, Lord Finesse-produced instrumental. By the time of his passing, he'd morphed into an avant-garde, genre-blending rapper who'd firmly positioned himself in the lane of an artist's artist.

At the beginning of our gallery, Miller is a rap game upstart who's just a couple years removed from dropping a freestyle over DMX's "Get It on the Floor." By the end, he's crafted genre-fluid efforts like The Divine Feminine and Swimming. Throughout the collection of pictures, Miller is usually onstage, a place he made a name for himself during the course of his career. When he's not rocking the mic, you can even see a shot of him playing the guitar, flaunting some of the musical prowess that helped make him a star.

Check out all of Mac Miller's different looks for yourself in our gallery below, which includes images of the rapper from every year back to 2011. When you're done, check out what celebrities like singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, Seth Rogen and more had to say about Miller after his untimely passing.
