Black Thought Honors Trayvon Martin in New Video “Rest in Power” for Jay-Z’s Docuseries

Days before the premiere of Jay-Z's six-part documentary, Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story, the Paramount Network has shared a music video for a Black Thought song featured in the series.

The track, also titled "Rest in Power," finds the Roots frontman eulogizing Martin, whose fatal shooting at the age of 17 by George Zimmerman in Florida catalyzed the formation of the Black Lives Matter movement. The song bookends Thought's verses with clips from the documentary, including audio of Zimmerman's 911 call, and Martin's mother saying, "They say that, uh, time heals all wounds. It does not."

"One killer, one child, one weapon/The shooter was unthreatened, seventy-one seconds/So many unanswered questions, I see reflections of myself/I feel like in fatherhood we are connected/Too long before the shooter was arrested/So wrong, worldwide, we've been affected/To them it's real, sins of the father remembered still/For every Trayvon Martin, there was an Emmett Till," Black Thought raps.

The video features additional clips from the documentary, which promises to capture Martin's life and the political impact of his death and its aftermath. Co-directors Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason adapted the doc's structure from a memoir by Martin's parents and a second book about Zimmerman's trial by Hollywood attorney Lisa Bloom. The duo last worked with Hov on TIME: The Kalief Browder Story, and Furst plans to direct the forthcoming Meek Mill docuseries, also executive produced by Jay.

Rest in Power premieres on the Paramount Network on July 30. You can watch Black Thought's music video below. All streaming proceeds from the song will be donated to The Trayvon Martin Foundation.
