David Banner is officially back in the building. Seven years after releasing his last album, Death of a Pop Star, the Mississippi-bred producing-rapping dynamo unleashes his The God Box album, a body of work filled to the brim with thumping beats and social commentary. For Banner, the project is even more than the sum of its parts.

“It’s more than an album, it’s an art exhibit," he says in a statement. "It’s sort of like a secret. It’s something that people are going to have to come to their own conclusions on. Everyone will get something different out of the album; and I’ll let the listener decide what that is.”

Banner means for the album to be interpreted in different ways, but life as a Black man in the U.S. is most definitely something The God Box deals with in sizable doses. The project's heartfelt CeeLo Green-assisted opening track, "Magnolia," makes that clear from the jump.

Featuring appearances from Green, Raheem DeVaughn, Big K.R.I.T, Black Thought, Trinidad James, WatchtheDuck and Big Rube and Banner's production for at least half of the album, The God Box is definitely worthy of a listen.
